I went to high school (Kennedy High) in Granada Hills, CA...many years ago...our quarterback was Tom Ramsey (he played pro ball and did commentary; he might still be around, but I've lost track). Our biggest rival team was Granada High; their quarterback was John Elway. This was 1977 - 1978; we never missed a game. Watching these guys play ball was always a thrill for us, and we knew even then that they were destined to play pro. Those Friday night games were some of the best times we ever had, and we'll always remember them. We weren't a small town, but it seemed like everybody turned out for those games. And the drinking part? Well, we were doing Jello shots before they were cool (we told our parents they were Jello "Knox Blocks"...I doubt they believed us, but they let us get our party on anyway; everybody seemed to sense there was something special about those times, plus we were responsible kids; had a designated driver, etc). It was a long time ago, but when I look at the game photos in my yearbook, I'm right back there and it really just seems like it was yesterday. We weren't a small town, we did our fair share of drinking, and we were blue voters. But red or blue, at least we vote, and for decades, we all have come together for Friday night football games. It's what makes America great (and we've always been great). Now I live in a small community in Northern California, and our high school football team is AWESOME (Bear River)...so the tradition continues. This is a great song to celebrate that tradition...everybody, young and old, can relate.
