    - It also is known as cobnut or filbert nut according to species.
    - There are 14 to 18 species of hazel. The nuts of all hazels are edible.
    - The plants range from 3 to 36 meters (10 to 120 feet) in height.
On the island of Colonsay in Scotland, they found a large, shallow pit full of the remains of hundreds of thousands of burned hazelnut shells dating back 9,000 years ago.
    - The flowers are called catkins.
    - The fruit is a nut, produced in clusters of one to five together, each nut held in a short leafy involucre (“husk”)
    - Hazels also offer many values for the ecosystem. They provide nutritious food for animals, such as squirrels and birds, who also serve as dispersal agents for the reproduction of plants.
    - Hazelnuts contain vitamins, minerals, protein, fibre and healthy fats.
    - Hazelnut is produced primarily in Greece, Turkey, Italy USA, Azerbaijan and Georgia.
    - Ferrero SpA, the maker of Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, uses 25% of the global supply of hazelnuts.
Hazelnut is famous as a coffee flavouring.

I had a tree in the garden, but I had to cut it down, sadly, as it was getting too big. If you buy them, they better be organic. Make sure to follow the seasons and let the nut stratify in winter. They are typically quite easy to grow. Oh, and if you leave them outside, be careful with the squirrels. If you have a shed, it's much safer.
