They should have used the name like "John Carter of Mars" for marketing, and it could have been at least a movie trilogy, or a tv-series like "Game of Thrones". There is plenty of Martian novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs that just need to adopt for films. I read all those novels many years ago.
I did too it time for it to make a comeback to the movie theaters and get a new cast of characters from literature modern or old it doesn't matter to stand together
I was a fan of these for what they were and there’s a few more to add to the list. Hell ‘90’s, 2000’s, and 2010’s are littered with movies that had the potential to make 2-3 movies after the first one but whatever happened at box office and critical reception weren’t on their side. Then again we do have the sequels that are to little to late, that can’t recapture the original magic of the first movie.
Constantine the movie was pretty bad. Constantine the TV series was amazing. Sadly he only got one season. I couldn’t stand legends of tomorrow. Even the Constantine character/actor in that wasn’t enough to let me watch more than one episode, but I’m so glad he got a chance to keep playing the character a while longer.
1. Respect the source material. 2. Don't try to make a franchise 3. Just because they have a British accent doesn't mean they can act. 4. Have a director with more than a few music videos to their credit before handing over a hundred million dollars for a film. 5. Trust the intelligence of the audience to recognize junk when they see it. 6. Always story first, effect second. I would say more, but the movie industry won't change unless they get rid of a lot of stupid people.
I loved the Mortal Instruments movie. It was so good. I didn't care for The Golden Compass. I loved Beautiful Creatures. I still don't understand why there wasn't a sequel.
The Lone Ranger outtakes on the DVD are way better than the movie itself. Johnny Depp mugging his in chadacter voice trying to coax the horse hes in camera with to stay in frame is priceless.
Both Lone Ranger movies flopped for many reasons, but for me, what killed both was that the Lone Ranger was not an epic hero; he was just more competent than the groups of bad guys who threatened average people. As it says in the Lone Rangers code - "That all things change but the truth, and that truth alone, lives on forever." That would have been a good theme.
Disney mishandled the release of John Carter- very little pre publicity and what there was was low key. The film itself was compromised because the original story line was altered. The original book "A Princess of Mars" had easily enough narrative for a 2hour film but as always some "brain" thought they knew better than the original author and altered the story. The actual appearances of the green/red martians was good and a fit with the novels. Disney gave up the film rights a few years ago. Let's hope that some ambitious studio picks up the challenge and does a movie or TV series which finally acknowledges Edgar Rice Burroughs skill as a story teller Kaor! (as they say on Barsoom)
The original story was created as an adult fantasy with what should have been a hard R rating and not a juvenile P13. Oh, and it would have helped if the director had made a few live-action movies before being picked to direct. 😎
I don't like or listen to critics, I make up my own mind, they have far too much sway over the success or failure of movies , TV and everything else in the entertainment industry no matter the genre .Great video, Cheers.
This list failed to mention that Golden Compass and Mortal Instruments led to 2 amazing tv series that ran 3 seasons each Shadowhunters and His Dark Materials
What you failed to mention is that Shadowhunters started off with promise, but quickly lost viewers and was cancelled in its third season, mostly because the show lost its focus on the story it was supposed to be telling.
I remember when the producers of Mortal Instruments announced the tv version they said 'tv offers us so much more scope for telling the story!'. And I thought why didn't you go down that route in the first place then?
I thought that 13th Warrior was great. Epic hero story told from a close side character perspective. Had great interactions throughout like Banderas' character learning the Viking language, the Viking duel where the 'good' guy feinted getting pounded for most of it, the Viking death song, etc. Oh well, if they made the 14th Warrior they would have messed it up.
I loved the mortal instruments it's what made me fall head over heels for Jamie Campbell bower I also loved the league of extraordinary gentlemen . I am a fan of Stuart Townsend and loved him as Dorian . I used to own both of these movies 🍿 lol 😂❤
The Lone Ranger was an abomination. The Mummy was also BAD. Some things do not need to be rebooted. League of Extraordinary Gentleman was fun and I never understood wht there was never another.
I thought many of these films were great fun, dont know if its audiences of today hoping for more,or studios not making the huge profits they expected for themselves but personally I enjoyed a lot of these.
The Mortal Instruments failed because it was trying TOO hard to be the next Twilight franchise, and doing it in ways that were painfully obvious to the point of being insulting.
There are still things in that movie I don't fully understand like was that kid definitely gonna turn into a werewolf? And were those half brother and sisters going to hook up? Or were they gonna remain Close but not lovers ?!
I never saw the film itself but, looking at this small snippet that was the first thing that came to my mind. I just couldn't remember the name of the other franchise till I saw it in this comment. Never watched the Twilight series either but at the time when it was all the buzz if you weren't living under a rock you were forced to know about it whether you watched yourself or not.
The failure of those several dark universe related franchises really upsets me I would have really enjoyed them and to be honest even with all it's flaws I enjoyed that mummy movie with tom cruise Especially knowing that they are gonna be movies in that universe to follow! When they included doctor Jekyll I didn't feel like that was forced to set up a sequel I was excited...And when they did that picture of all those actors and actresses I was really hooked lol !🤔😥 I also immensely enjoyed the movie Dracula untold And I was very excited to see Ryan gosling as a werewolf Et cetera
The big problem with Disney is they kept making big budget films that would have been cheap serials in the 40's, or low budget flicks in the 50's. IMO, John Carter and Green Lantern were good for what they were ---- BUT --- with huge budgets over $250M, they were doomed to failure. We don't need huge CGI budgets to enjoy cheesy type movies.
Liked Eragon... but hadn't read any of the books till after. Too bad... a sequel where the dragon gets drunk and falls flat on her ass would be worth seeing.
I loved LXG and John Carter. Both were wonderful sci Fi romps. Nothing world shattering but enjoyable movies. LXG didn’t go as weird and dark as the source material, but they were trying for a wider audience appeal & I liked the interpretation of the characters. Best lines of that movie: “They say Africa will never let me die.” “But you’re not in Africa now.” “…no.” John Carter was closer to the source material, I think. I never read the stories. Loved the giant apes, the insectoid Martians, and the skyships. Sad that they didn’t do better $$$.
Zoom (2006) Now The Movie Was Fine For a early morning airing on FX but that film had Tim Allen, Courtney Cox, Kate Mara, and the Fat Kid from The Cat In The Hat so that film had bomb written all over with a capital B
That was such a strange setting. Loved the first book, sort of liked the second, didn’t finish the third. But the movie really did it’s best to capture the feel of the world. And more or less stayed true to the characters. Except Hester - they just didn’t dare ugly her up like she should have been.
I wonder if studio changes their approach instead of abandoning these series midway the way they did, it may get better? I mean, even those that made it also vary in result in each sequels, so there's the possibility the next one will hit, right? But honestly sometimes turning these trilogies or series into a TV series might be better. You don't always find the right mix that alows the movie to capture all the essential part of a book, and therefore satisfy the fresh audience and at least appease the fans of original series the way Dune or Jackson's TLOTR did. TV series if done well can do more justice for the work, better than movie could, especially with how good CG is used in these nowadays.
Neither critics NOR Rotten Tomatoes mean a rat's tail when it comes to either box office success of financial failure. How a movie does financially is entirely separate from what critics' think
The Golden Compass wasnt all that bad. His Dark Materials started strong, but by the end of the 2nd season had descended into such a pustulent mess that ive never bothered to see S3.
Regarding 2:02 - Five years later Spielberg and Lucas wanted Sean Connery back for 2008's "Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull," and I would imagine there were offers coming his way to the end of his life. I seriously doubt "League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" actually "torpedoed" Connery's career. Much more likely he was just at a point where he was ready to step outside of the lime light.
Just wanted to note that IMHO a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen without the Timw Traveller or Sherlock Holmes is like a Justice League without Superman or Batman.
The Golden Compass and John Carter are the only ones in this list which I would consider worthy of a sequel, no I dare say they are deserving of a sequel. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen had IMO no series potential at all and, to me that looked intentional. So I don't see why it is on this list. The rest of those movies were so bad, that I lack the words to describe it with Eragon taking the crown.
"The Golden Compass" (2007) "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (2003) "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" (2013) "I, Frankenstein" (2014) "Eragon" (2006) "Fantastic Four" (2015) "The Last Airbender" (2010) "Jupiter Ascending" (2015) "The Lone Ranger" (2013) "John Carter" (2012) "The Mummy" (2017)
If only I Frankenstein and the League of extraordinary gentlemans if only they could have done a crossover of the two they really would have deliver a box office hit
I enjoyed many of these films because I don't expect the genius of Shakespeare to come from Hollywood. And I've learned to accept that the last original thing to come from Hollywood was Streisand's nose................................as well as her beauty and voice.
IMHO "The Lone Ranger" died because they made it a comedy. Should have made it a serious action movie. Personelly I am glad some of these failed, they were manure before they were filmed. I don’t think so. It didn’t really feel like it set up a sequel. Dredd, however, that could easily have led to a series of movies. If the story writers could cull through the decades of comics to pick out whatever would draw in audiences. Judge dredd is usually one off short stories, and the character doesn’t really have any kind of “arc”.
The Fantastic Four franchise should have bowed out and let the Silver Surfer take over. GL had a trash story. LXG was respectable as a yarn, but "Tom Sawyer" from America??? ...please... Most of these "Novels" sucked as well.. and the casting is pitiful in most movies today, such as blacks in roles that we know weren't black in the novels!!
‘John Carter’ and ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ are criminally underrated films.
John Carter was a ton of fun. But it was vastly different than the books. But I recommend to anybody, if you can separate the 2, watch the movie.

I actually thought both were really good movies. I enjoyed both..
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen I loved.
I love The league of extraordinary gentleman. Watched it many times.
You might enjoy reading the graphic novel it was based on. One of the best from Alan Moore.
I love the League of Extraordinary Gentleman! Just like Van Helsing, Constantine, Dracula impaler, ...
I did too it time for it to make a comeback to the movie theaters and get a new cast of characters from literature modern or old it doesn't matter to stand together
I do too. But, objectively, I can see why it failed. It was a bit of a mess and it piled on the cheese.

What about I Am Number Four?
I'm fairly sure that was set up for additional films to follow.
There were several books in the series, so I'm sure the studios hoped it would be the next great YA dystopian franchise.
I like this movie 😅
I loved the Mortal Instruments movie. It was so good. I didn't care for The Golden Compass. I loved Beautiful Creatures. I still don't understand why there wasn't a sequel.
makes me love the 1999 the mummy movie even more.

Is rotten tomato how the world judges a movie now? Guess I'll keep being radical and watch it for myself
None of the ads for John Carter even suggested it was Science Fiction.
They should have advertised it was the grandfather of the modern science fiction genre.
Unfortunately, John Carter of Mars is not as well-known as Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle by the same author.
"Divergent"; "Speed Racer", and, maddeningly, "The Nice Guys".
Wait...the Nice Guys was supposed to be a franchise too. Bummer! That movie was crazy good.
Tom Cruiser has been in some stinkers
I agree and his casting as Jack Reacher is laughable
Is he related at all to Tom Cruise 😆
Thumbs down for the AI voiceover. Speak into a microphone. It's not that hard. Seriously.
Yeah, it was especially jarring when instead of saying "three hundred nine million" the AI said "three oh nine million"

Mummy 2017 had to fight against Mummy 1999, being a mishmash rehash did it no favours.
At the Mortal Instruments movie was more faithful to the book.
I like I, Frankenstein, Eragon, and John Carter.
1:20 who's the young actress listening to Nicole Kidman? She looks familiar but i cant quite place her.....??
