While it isn’t a perfect film or one of Dr. Seuss Best adaptations, I still appreciate what Illumination did for their first animated adaptation of a Dr. Seuss story even if the message was on the nose and far different to the original book and the 1972 animated special. On top of that, It’s also impressive with how Illumination almost captures the Dr. Seuss aesthetic through its animation even if Horton Hears a Who from Blue Sky did it better and the voice cast is impressive as you have Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zach Effron, Taylor Swift, Jenny Slate, Rob Riggle and the late Betty White (RIP) Although the both of you will be doing _Flushed Away_ next week, hopefully if you do continue watching more Dr. Seuss adaptations I recommend the following: _The Cat in the Hat_ starring Mike Myers (even though most would be against it), _Horton Hears a Who_ from Blue Sky Studios, _The Grinch (2018)_ also by Illumination, the original animated specials of _Horton_ and _The Grinch_ by Chuck Jones, and the original Animated specials of _The Lorax_ and _The Cat in the Hat_ by DePatie-Freleng productions.

A bit over the top but still it’s a fun movie. The cast was great and loved Danny Devito as the voice of Lorax👍😁. Loved your reaction/analysis, take care and have a good one❤️
Fun fact the Sound effect or voices is the same as what was done for the minions in despicable me, so it’s the same voice acting for the minions is also the fish in the Lorax!!!
Funeral for a Tree, played when the Lorax us putting rocks around the tree stump and at the end when he returns, is one of my favourite pieces of music from a movie
This movie was a huge hit in my house when my kids were younger because the music is so fun. I never read the book so I didn’t mind if it wasn’t faithful it was just fun for young kids and has catchy songs. The overall theme was still good in my opinion.
If I met one of those fish in a dark alley, I would quite likely freak. However, in broad daylight, and given their surroundings, I would decide that they were very cute.
I have read mny Dr. Suess books when i was a kid and my kids (especially my youngest) loved Dr. Suess books too. The Lorax was her favorite book for a long time and when she watched this movie she loved it. So it might be more nostalgia for me but i love this movie and the songs. Danny Devito was perfect for the Lorax. It has been awhile since i have watched this movie, but when it is on i watch it.
As expected there's alot of people mentioning "biggering" the cut/rewritten alternative to "how bad ban I be" Listening to your perspective about how this movie is more simple and light hearted i can kinda see why it was changed, but at the same time the Change affected the message and basically removed any accountability onceler should've had for his actions by portraying him as being ignorant and manipulated by his family.
the onceler took accountability for his actions. he said multiple times throughout the movie that everything was his fault. he knew it and accepted it. that is accountability. perhaps you mean he never faced consequences for his actions? imo, he did though. he lived the rest of his life isolated, cut off from society. whether by his own choice or because people no longer accepted him, that is the consequence of his actions. if you feel he should have been punished further, well... i just don't agree. people don't always need severe punishment after making mistakes, even serious ones. punishment is meant for people who don't accept accountability or acknowledge their mistake, in order to help them recognize the severity of the situation. the onceler didn't need additional punishment, he already knew how awful what he'd done was, and thoroughly punished himself for it. but i do agree that some of the other changes effected the message too much.
@@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF so, from what I got from the original comment, I think they're talking about how they made him manipulated by his family instead of it being his idea which takes responsibility away from him
@@sawanna508 it doesn't take away all responsibility ofc, but a lot of it. Having it be so his emotionally abusive family pressures him into makes him feel like a victim
Maybe give Horton Hears a Who a try next. Both that and this movie are so so good in my opinion, wished you liked this more than you did but that's ok lol. I love The Lorax as someone with a degree in conservation, and also personally knowing so many people who are similar to the Onceler I find it to be a fabulous movie. (Gosh, you must have missed the Tumblr days where girls were going RABID over the Onceler lmao that was a wild time). Horton Hears a Who isn't a conservation movie but still has a very important message that maybe you'd feel a little stronger about than this one.
If you read the book, it is exactly the message. You should read the StarBellied Sneetches or the ButterBattle. In your face messages of prejudice and stupidity of war. He was in your face.
Another Suess movie where they made another story based off the original. When the older version of the Oncler ryhmes he does make a few direct references, the start with the snail line is from the original writings. I dont mind the changes too much I just look at it as different telling of the story, they worked the orginal stuff in it well and then added fun pandering to make a movie. I love that they use the Suess excuse to come up with these crazy worlds and buildings since that was very suess in itself. You can love both if youre willing to accept to that this a movie made by fans based off of the characters and base story of the book and that the book is a book written by an absolute legend and you should give a read if you ever get the chance
Fun fact: How Bad Can I Be was originally a different song called Biggering. It treated the subject matter a lot more seriously and cut a little deeper about the realities of big business - which people theorise is the reason it got cut in favour of this song, which basically turns it into a joke and seriously underplays how serious the subject matter is. Because the book is straight-up depressing - it's VERY serious and very dark. The book ends with the message of "Unless", and we don't see what happens after. This film is very tonally off for what the book was trying to do, and Biggering could've fixed a lot of that. Highly recommend looking Biggering up - you can find it on RUclips. It's vastly superior to the song that ended up in the movie.

6:38 - Okay, EVERYTHING before this point (and most everything that derives from it in the rest of the movie) was original to this movie. THIS is where the original book started. Everything related to Thneedville and it's politics was embellishment. I recommend that you guys watch the original '72 animated version of The Lorax to get the story without the embellishment. It's available in full on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/8V06ZOQuo0k/видео.html 11:30 - To be clear, in the original story, the Once-ler and all his kin were faceless creatures (as in their faces were always hidden, not ACTUALLY faceless). That doesn't work in a feature--length film, of course. 14:24 - A thneed is a fine thing that everyone needs. 35:54 - In the original, the animals left one species at a time as the conditions got worse. They'd all left by the time of the Once-ler's 'Biggering' speech (which DID end with the fall of the last Truffua Tree). 36:42 - Direct quote from the original. You guys should react to the original cartoon. I linked it earlier.
they talked about the effects of the absence of trees and the behavior of corporations, it was a good movie.there's criticism even in the soundtrack of this movie. It's a great Dr. Seuss movie.
I respect the people who enjoy this movie, but I personally prefer the original animated version. It's shorter, and follows the book exactly. The thing is, the original Lorax story isn't quite "simple." The original story is dark, with very little actual humor, and with a very open ending that actually requires the viewers to think. This one, to me, kind of panders to the younger audience, force-feeding them the message while also trying to entertain them and thus taking away from the message. It LOOKS good, but...yeah, I prefer the original. Which I would love for you guys to react to, actually.
So the book is actually way less preachy and simple compared to the movie One of the reasons its so popular is because it takes a nuance view on the subject.... its more about finding compromise and balance than which side is right or wrong
@@k.o.h3599 it did for a while, but then we took out critical thinking from schools and from the mid 1980s to now we've steadily become less and less able to use critical thinking... all while at the same time like sheep voted into office people who would bend, break, and make rules to favor select corporations In losing our nuance we literally became the extremes presented as the wrong way to think in the book So I would argue the book is more correct and needed today than 40 years ago
i liked aspects of this movie, but it definitely isn't a favorite. i much prefer Horton Hears a Who as far as more recent Dr Seuss adaptations go. enjoyed the reaction though! :)
I recently learned from one of my friends that Dr. Seuss used to live in La Jolla, which is about 15 minutes from where I live. The truffula trees/Seussian trees were inspired by some of the palm trees that grow in that area! And when you said the elderly Onceler looked like Scrooge, that reminded me that the Grinch and his whole story was based on a cranky old lady neighbor of Dr. Seuss who complained of the noise she heard from the top of the high hill surrounded by cliffs leading down to La Jolla beach. He often participated in community celebrations down there, and she often griped about the loud noises from revelers that she could hear from her lavish house up in the hills like the Grinch. Bah, humbug indeed.

Which is exactly what they want. It's not going to get better, it's not. *Unless* people actually get their shit together and do something. People have forgotten the power of the masses, we used to be able to dethrone kings and topple dictators. We need some of that energy back tbh.
Yeah yeah preachy I know I know, but if what I say makes you feel uncomfortable it's because in your heart you know it's true.
Oh this takes me back. 'How bad can I be' used to be my jam for a while
I don’t care what anyone says. Best Dr Seuss adaptation ever.
I saw this movie once, years ago, and a couple of the songs still pop up in my head
the "How Bad can I Be" rings a bit more harrowing in todays climate in my opinion...
Totally enjoying and appreciate you guys doing some underrated yet great animated movies lately..
Thanks..
Honestly a guilty pleasure of mine
thank you for that. The conversation after was really thoughtfull and intresting. I love this debate and the way you guys may not agree on everything but you discuss it with a full attention and consideration
Fun fact when the grandmother is telling about oncler for the first time the rimes she does is a reference to the old street of the lifted lorax song from the original cartoon from 1972
Am I tho only one who genuinely enjoys this movie. I find it funny 💀
I didn't realize people didn't like it 😂
I love this movie. But I youngest daughter when it came out on DVD would watch it almost every day..haha but it still love it.
@@marslaraI love this movie, what you mean bro
@@ixagonczi Read the comments, a whole lot of people think it's the scum of the earth because it's different from the book or because it's not "gritty" enough based on the biggering song
@@marslara I mean I watched the original 25min movie and I got to say that I were worried the whole time watching it that it would just cut of because at 10min it felt like I had already watched more then 25min. So yeah I don’t understand what they are talking about, I thought the message was kinda obvious in that one too and is honestly felt longer then this film. But I mean yeah this movie would have been better with the other song.
I watched Lorax in High School and I liked it🔥. The animation was great. At the ending I loved the animation shown on how the plant grew and the transition etc. The message was really good.
For w/e reason the opening song is often stuck in my head and I sometimes sing random stuff to the same rhythm 😂
I do remember being super excited when this came out that I shared my name (Audrey) with a character voiced by Taylor Swift!😆🙌🏼
i need to drope airplanes in your garden so i can talk to you :3 i love this movie, i speak for the trees
But, Have you heard the song that was going to replace How Bad Can I Be?(the name is Biggering)
I used to get scared by the The Once-ler especially when Ted rang the doorbell
I always forget about this movie
The flashback is pretty much the OG story and everything else is for the movie.
If I met one of those fish in a dark alley, I would quite likely freak. However, in broad daylight, and given their surroundings, I would decide that they were very cute.
i hope yall watch the og short fro
m the 70s
Just to let you know,
All of this unfolded because a 12 year old was a simp
I have read mny Dr. Suess books when i was a kid and my kids (especially my youngest) loved Dr. Suess books too. The Lorax was her favorite book for a long time and when she watched this movie she loved it. So it might be more nostalgia for me but i love this movie and the songs. Danny Devito was perfect for the Lorax. It has been awhile since i have watched this movie, but when it is on i watch it.
My sister really liked this movie when she was little so it reminds me of her now
Super fun reaction. Thanks!
As expected there's alot of people mentioning "biggering" the cut/rewritten alternative to "how bad ban I be"
Listening to your perspective about how this movie is more simple and light hearted i can kinda see why it was changed, but at the same time the Change affected the message and basically removed any accountability onceler should've had for his actions by portraying him as being ignorant and manipulated by his family.
the onceler took accountability for his actions. he said multiple times throughout the movie that everything was his fault. he knew it and accepted it. that is accountability. perhaps you mean he never faced consequences for his actions? imo, he did though. he lived the rest of his life isolated, cut off from society. whether by his own choice or because people no longer accepted him, that is the consequence of his actions. if you feel he should have been punished further, well... i just don't agree. people don't always need severe punishment after making mistakes, even serious ones. punishment is meant for people who don't accept accountability or acknowledge their mistake, in order to help them recognize the severity of the situation. the onceler didn't need additional punishment, he already knew how awful what he'd done was, and thoroughly punished himself for it. but i do agree that some of the other changes effected the message too much.
@@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF so, from what I got from the original comment, I think they're talking about how they made him manipulated by his family instead of it being his idea which takes responsibility away from him
@@maddiemorales1419 He is still responsible because he could have stood up against his family.
@@sawanna508 it doesn't take away all responsibility ofc, but a lot of it. Having it be so his emotionally abusive family pressures him into makes him feel like a victim
to this day i still believe the once-ler is ted’s grandpa i mean they look exactly alike
I know this is a kid movie all i do know about this is like the meme
The "villan" of the movie is the guy who saw a problem, the lack of pure air, and presented a solution.
what about the plans to increase the pollution so he can sell more clean air?
You mean the guy who literally planned to make the problem WORSE because it made him more money?
@@LordofFullmetal Never would have happened if his family (the real villains) made him do it in the first place.
Have you watched Horton hears a who? I think out of the Dr seuss adaptions, that one has always been a favourite.
Rip Betty White
If you read the book, it is exactly the message.
You should read the StarBellied Sneetches or the ButterBattle. In your face messages of prejudice and stupidity of war. He was in your face.
Those are two of my favorite stories
My kids loved Dr. Suess and we have (still have it) the movies to thoses stories. Especially my youngest would watch them all the time.
What gets me the most in the movie is that my wife’s name is Audrey and she’s also a redhead
Grandma is the MVP
You should watch Horton hears a who from Dr. Seuss. The voice cast includes Jim Carrey and Steve Carell.
You guys have to watch Horton hears a Who, it could be an animation starting from the same level of The Lorax upwards.. going for the best of it. I think you guys would like very much (i'm in my brothers account, but i can say that based on what i watch from you guys and your opinion :3
It was sophomore year in high school that was the first and last time that I’ve seen this movie in horticulture class! I don’t remember anything what happened in this movie until now I remember the O’Hare Air thing and the trees being chopped off for making something which is “Thneed”. Another thing I remember learning in horticulture was topiary and we ended up watching “Edward Scissorhands afterwards because it shows all the topiary with many artificial, decorative shapes in the movie which is cool, I love that movie! And I know you guys have already seen that one, so loved that reaction:)
Oh no, this movie. When it came out to DVD, I was working in the electronics/photo/connection center department of Wal-mart and this movie was playing 24/7 *cries* lol I'll watch the reaction, but I'm going to have flashbacks hah
How bad can I be still plays in my head from time to time 😂
Also, I'd love for you guys to watch Horton hears a who
The marketing for this film was so so SO so opposite of its message it hurts.
Maybe the live action cat in the hat Plus I know that’s another good one to other than Christopher Robin as well and maybe Poohs Heffalump movie you never know with these sorts of questions, though
I really hope you guys see boxtrolls or surfs up, very under appreciated films
The seed landed in the clean air container because the town has no clean air except for what the guy sells and plants need clean water and clean air.
I really love this movie, but it seams that I don't love it enough since I recently find out
"this movie is a remake, that had children in mind"
6:38 - Okay, EVERYTHING before this point (and most everything that derives from it in the rest of the movie) was original to this movie. THIS is where the original book started. Everything related to Thneedville and it's politics was embellishment. I recommend that you guys watch the original '72 animated version of The Lorax to get the story without the embellishment. It's available in full on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/8V06ZOQuo0k/видео.html
11:30 - To be clear, in the original story, the Once-ler and all his kin were faceless creatures (as in their faces were always hidden, not ACTUALLY faceless).
My favourite dr Seuss movies are the grinch who stole Christmas and the Lorax
I know this isn’t a movie reaction, but I REALLY want a reaction to the cut song “biggering” now. It’s a must watch if you love this movie!
"Biggering" is a banger of a cut song from the soundtrack.
there is a very clear message with this movie
they talked about the effects of the absence of trees and the behavior of corporations, it was a good movie.there's criticism even in the soundtrack of this movie.
So the book is actually way less preachy and simple compared to the movie
One of the reasons its so popular is because it takes a nuance view on the subject.... its more about finding compromise and balance than which side is right or wrong
To be fair, seeing how much worse things had gotten in the 40 years between the book and the movie- the nuanced view clearly didn't work...
@@k.o.h3599 it did for a while, but then we took out critical thinking from schools and from the mid 1980s to now we've steadily become less and less able to use critical thinking... all while at the same time like sheep voted into office people who would bend, break, and make rules to favor select corporations
In losing our nuance we literally became the extremes presented as the wrong way to think in the book
So I would argue the book is more correct and needed today than 40 years ago
You know for a place that buys bottled air, thneedville looks remarkably clean and non-polluted.
This is preachy? Wait till you get to Barbie's third act. XD
It was ok rip Bety white
*Betty
i liked aspects of this movie, but it definitely isn't a favorite. i much prefer Horton Hears a Who as far as more recent Dr Seuss adaptations go. enjoyed the reaction though!
RIP Biggering. We were robbed. Thankfully we can still listen that rock opera masterpiece of a song. Shame it was cut... Alongside a lot of the original movie.
31:00 😂 That's literally our lives right now. 🙈
horton hears a who next?
I know a strange and funny movie that i think you guy would like, the movie is called Asterix the mansions of the gods 2016 movie, and i was wonder if you guy could watch that movie, please and thank you.

This Was My Favorite Movie When I Was Little...
Can you please watch the Curious George film from 2006?
It is an Underrated Masterpiece that literally anyone can enjoy.
Also, the animation is amazing!

What is this? This is not the Lorax I remember and love.
This is the better version
