Since I guess this joke didn't land with some, "so this Doctor's gay? When was that set up?" was sarcasm... Also, I'd like to add that the ending of this episode did feel a tad rushed and easy imo. Still, an enjoyable and Christmas-y enough - allbeit fantasy-genre driven - introduction. Just don't think about it too long. Or, do.
Houdini reference is from an audiobook. Anything the Doctor says about himself can be about any one of his incarnations. He is The Same Person with all the same experiences in every incarnation. Same as you and me if we take into consideration all the ways we have grown, we’re not the same person we were, and yet we are. We are also bigger on the inside.
Doctor who : Harry Houdini's war, is an audio story from big finish, with the Sixth Doctor from classic who. That's the reference that is being made. 13th doctor also reference their adventures with Houdini. Also love that you noticed the color change immediately when ruby was gone. The final scene 4th wall break is an homage to the 1st Doctor William Hartnell's Christmas special, where he wishes the audience Merry Christmas. Great reaction
Great review man. Recently came across your channel. Loving the Who reviews. I wanted to mention that I saw an interview that Russel Davies did where he mentioned the Toymaker coming into the real world dimension was the catalyst for fantasy creatures like goblins to show up (as opposed to everything being an alien with sciency words to describe what’s going on) like it opened a doorway which allows for these types of creatures to become part of the Whoniverse…
Well the Second Doctor (Troughton) had as a companion James (Jamie) McCrimmon a young piper of Clan MacLeod from 1746. Since he's a Scotsman he's always wearing a kilt*. He was the companion with the most episodes (just missed the second Doctor's regeneration) and with him until the regeneration into the Third Doctor (Pertwee). There was a running gag where the Doctor and Jamie were holding hands or embracing - suddenly realize what they're doing and awkwardly stop - for the late 60's that's gay. We know that TimeLords have the appearance of Earthlike humans and have recently discovered they come in all our "flavors"**. There's a line in Wild Blue Yonder where the Doctor describes a man as gorgeous (or really good looking) and then says something like "Oh, I'm like that now?!!" and Donna replies "Always have been." RTD is gay and the show is "woke" so why not? * possibly (but not necessarily) a reference to the kilt in this episode. ** never an Ood, never a Sontaran, never a giant penguin
When I watched this, I must have thought the Toymaker's defeat put an end to the whole salt business/the laws of physics don't apply (or something idk). Alas, I am a buffoon and that is not the case.
I feel like it’s hard to compare this episode with the 11th hour because this was a Christmas episode. I feel like all of the Christmas episodes lean more towards the family friendly whimsical side. I’m excited to see what his actual first episode will be outside of the specials. Matt Smith has always been my favourite doctor, but even from this one episode, he might have some competition. Ncuti is so charismatic and electric. It sounds silly, but it’s like he was born to play this role.
A few opinions/answers/"answers" to things: The reason this felt so magical was because it was all magic and luck. RTD said because The Toymaker was unleashed into this universe, the laws of play are now in effect and may be stronger than science and physics. Toymaker said his legions were coming, so things like goblins and witches and magic would be inside the mind of someone who only thinks of games and toys, no? That's also why mavity is a thing now. I don't think that 15 is gay per se, considering previous incarnations who are the same person have been in love with Rose, River, Clara, and Yaz. But if you remember the "wasn't Newton so hot" joke? It's kind of always been there, going back to the second doctor. We've just always had someone like Sarah Jane, Leela, Grace, and the new companions and ONLY had male leads until Jodie so it never came up too seriously. I don't know if he knew the goblins name, but he called her Janice because Janice Goblin is a pun on Janice Joplin. Yes, he still has trauma from Flux and Tecteun. Just because he's over it doesn't mean it doesn't exist anymore. We all fix ourselves, but occasionally reflect on how we were before we fixed ourselves. We can all become better but that doesn't mean we forget, just forgive. Houdini was a 6th Doctor story. The Doctor wasn't trying to join the dance party, he was buying time for the ship to come apart. Getting the goblins to sing and dance while their master knot came undone. I think the woman carrying Ruby is 13. Not only has RTD refused to retcon her era, but he's doubled down at every turn. It can't be a coincidence he's referenced her run every single episode and it's played an important role. Now if Ruby is The Doctor, or just a found Time Lord who survived The Master's assault on Gallifrey is totally unknown. And a lot of people think Mrs Flood is River Song. Melody Pond/River Song/Carol Flood. But I personally think she's either The Valeyard or The Renegade, and I lean towards the latter. Renegade is a Time Lord who can't keep their regenerations in order. Kind of a Jekyll Hyde, but also can't keep the memories or personalities straight which could be why she didn't recognize the TARDIS at first.
the gobblin singer probably was not named jannis, but jannis gobblin just has a nice ring to it. The Doctor was friends with Joplin, she was the one who gave him that coat ,that the 10th doctor was running so cool.
For me, i didnt get the sense 15 was lonely or really sad about his history. He seemed to say he was alone matter of factly, it is rubys reactions that give us the impression he is sad and lonely. Im sure it will be explored but i would wxpect 15 to be pretty ok with his background, but ruby might provide a new perspective. My prediction is that the series will be about your chosen family, or at least uou can have family without genetic family. I dont expect 15 to get or want any answrs about himself
Mrs. Flood is definately a time lord otherwise how does she have the knowledge of a TARDIS but if it is the case i'm hoping it's someone we havent met because i think The Master, The Rani, Susan, Meddling Monk or Romana would get abit predictable at this point if she's revealed asone of those characters.

I was about to comment about that joke lmaoo cuz the doctor has always been very queer lmaoo

This is a charming episode, really made us smile at Christmas, your line about Jolie walking cracked me up. You give off a good vibe dude.
Charming indeed. And you're far too kind Cooper - feel free to tell me I suck sometimes.
@@BingeBuffoon I see you being so self depreciating you could be English man and it makes me wanna tell you the positives ")
@Cooper_Vision hahaha that's fair.
"How do he know her name?"
She's a goblin, she sings, so... Janis Goblin (like Janis Joplin)

Oh wow. Good to know.

Love all this background! Always a good read. That said, I was totally being sarcastic/trolling with my "when was that set up?" comment, lol.
Magic is what happens if The Doctor sprinkles salt at the end of the universe where reality is thin.... as you know, Mr Buffoon 🤨

They took a big swing with this doctor, but I'm willing to see where it goes. I enjoyed this episode 👍🏻

"when was that set up" Tennant was just talking about how he was Bi and it wasn't exactly a secret last episode lol
...I was trolling lol - Hence the laugh, "jk", and my reference to the Isaac Newton controversy. Seems like that went over a few heads.
the gobblin singer probably was not named jannis, but jannis gobblin just has a nice ring to it. The Doctor was friends with Joplin, she was the one who gave him that coat ,that the 10th doctor was running so cool.
Oh, I really like that a lot now.
Dunno about Houdini, but this Doctor for sure spent a HOT SUMMER with Vlad Tepes.
Judging by how he impaled the Goblin King.

You're probably right.
If we get a bit of Captain Jack in new Doctor i am all for it! Give me the Doctor who flirts with all genders!!!
