Ulysses Everett's wife's name is Penny, which is a nickname for ... Homer's Ulysses' wife Penelope!!! John T did a great job as Pete, but Tim Blake Nelson's role as Delmar O'Donnell had much more gravitas and heft. Tim even did his own REAL singing for the "I had a friend named Ramblin' Bob ...".
The scene where Everett, Pete, and Delmar peer out of the bushes at the Klan rally is a reference to The Wizard of Oz, where Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion watch the guards marching outside the witch's castle.
In the Odyssey, Zeus kills Odysseus' men with a lightning bolt as punishment for their having killed the cattle of Helios. In O Brother, Where Art Thou?, George Nelson kills a bunch of cattle for no good reason, and later is taken to be executed in the electric chair.
The soundtrack for this film was up for multiple awards including Best Album Of The Year at The Grammys, a pretty rare accomplishment for a soundtrack. I have to say that it’s one of the rare times that The Grammys got it right.
Those responsible have been sacked. 😆
The title comes from a wonderful Preston Sturges film called "Sullivan's Travels," which also features a scene where prisoners are taken to see a movie in a movie theater.
Sturges' prisoner scene was one of the best scenes of the 20th Century.
“… my hair!”
-Everett
It’s always a pleasure and a half seeing you two enjoy a good movie. Many thanks for your reaction and the laughs. Keep on keeping on and Gritos from Tejas.

The "Crossroads" is an actual place. It's in my hometown of Clarksdale, MS. It's where Blues legend, Robert Johnson, "sold" his soul. Today, it's where two state highways intersect.
Tim Blake Nelson did his own singing on 'In the Jailhouse Now,' the only member of the trio to do so.
Coen bros at their most creative...This is my favorite of theirs, with that great Roger Deakins cinematography and the soundtrack!
Want a crazy Cohen Brothers movie???
“Raising Arizona “
with Nicholas Cage and Holly Hunter and John Goodman..
Amen! & Randall "Tex" Cobb as the biker! 💣
And Frances McDormand & Sam McMurray as the worst married couple ever. Say, that reminds me....
@@notabritperse Something wrong with his semen...and one too many Polish jokes...
Such a great reaction, Jen and Nick! Very impressed with Nick remembering the Greek mythology! Tommy's character was based on the great bluesman, Robert Johnson. The very first Cohen brothers movie, " Blood Simple" should be watched at some point. It is a little rough to watch, but it features the very young Frances McDormand.
WELCOME BACK!!!
Missed you guys!!!!
😊❤
Oh Great mum showing her son a favorite of hers, really like that. This is a great movie that is overlooked too often but once found is quickly a favorite for most. Since I am one of the first to view this reaction I am happy to report that this is an adaptation of Homer's (born 8th century BC) 'The Odyssey' & is one of the oldest extant works of literature still widely read by modern readers & has numerous movie & music adaptations.
deakins did the cinematography for 1917 and for shawshank
This is one of the funniest Coen Brothers movies ever made!
It's a retelling of Homer's The Odyssey.
Thanks for the extra "Odyssey" info. It does help reveal additional connections with this script.
Also, for another Clooney/Coen film, "Burn After Reading" is a fun one, with one of the most RIDICULOUSLY funny build-up-and-reveals I've ever seen.
The first Odyssey-literate reactor to draw the connection with Goodman/Cyclops getting wiped out by a fiery cross...
Tim Blake Nelson’s performance of In the Jailhouse Now is on the soundtrack, which was such a huge financial success (certified 8x platinum) that his royalties have netted him some serious cash.
Thank god you guys are back. I was having withdrawals. Welcome back!!
Damn, we're in a tight spot!
Fun reaction to this terrific film. So quotable, and with a superb soundtrack. And, of course, a marvelous cast, led by Clooney's wacky take on a young Clark Gable a la It Happened One Night era. My friend and I probably quote this even more than Fargo. Definitely recommend No Country For Old Men as well as their first film, Blood Simple.
Tim Nelson was hired as a consultant
"I dont want FOP god dammit I'm a Dapper Dan man!"
Please do Burn After Reading by them. It’s awesome with a great cast. You guys will love it.
The flooding was a real event. The Tennessee Valley Authority dammed and flooded a series of lakes to create an electrical system still in use today. The last I heard, you can still take a fish finder and get sonar pictures of the underwater homes.
The Coen Brothers' ability at writing deceptively brilliant dialogue and their creative use of language and timing is consistently impressive.
They can honestly write anything. They are legit writing geniuses.
Clooney's character was from the American south, but wasn't playing a country bumpkin. In fact, he was well read and particularly well spoken (as any silver-tongued lawyer might be). He didn't say "misdemeanorin' " for example. If you'd like to see Clooney playing something completely different, though, you should watch "From Dusk Til Dawn."
Your insights on the original Greek story were Priceless!!!🤩
Came back with a bang!
Don’t miss the Coen brothers movie The Hudsucker Proxy
That film's criminally underrated. It's a better remake of Frank Capra's Mr. Deeds Goes To Town than the Adam Sandler debacle.
im looking forward to this reaction! i love this movie!!
Charles ( pappy odanial) durning was a WW2 war hero...
To see Durning play a WWII veteran, I highly recommend the NCIS episode “Call of Silence,” for which he received an Emmy nomination. My father, who never watched fictional scripted television, watched it with me when I practically forced him to, and Charles Durning actually got my dad to cry. He hardly ever reacted like that to film or tv!
This is my favorite Coen Brothers movie! Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
Good to see you guys back. How was your holiday ?
Thanks for sharing your reactions to this film. It's a great one, so darned funny, and I can watch it over and over and never get tired of it!!!!
Thanks, guys! 😂
The coen bros 1st movie was a sort of film noirs story , I dont remember the name of it . Its probably the most normal movie they made......
Blood Simple
Did not expect a Max0r clip to pop up in here. 😅
Fun fact: Riding someone out of town on a rail predates the invention of trains and the railroad.
Yeah, I discovered him about a month ago. Been obsessed with his videos!
Never understood ride him out on a rail, until this Masterpiece of a movie! 😂❤
I lost my mom when I was a teen, I'm about the dudes age here so it's nice to watch, makes me think of what sharing some time with my mom would be like today. Appreciate yall!
Is there some England connection to your family? You guys both have American accents but I hear a bunch of britishism going on in words and stuff. Is that a thing or am I trippin. Feels like mom is british and has lived here a while and son took some of those speech mannerisms. She definitely has an interesting combination of accents.
The black guy at the crossroads is a nod to Robert Johnson who by legend sold his soul to the devil and created what we know as the modern blues.
Ah! 😊
The Odyssey is 10 years, the siege of Troy took the first 10 of his absence.
19:26 oh there is a treasure…though it won’t be the treasure they seek.
There is a movie about the Crossroads with Ralph Macchio and guitar legend Steve Vai. That would be a good watch 🤘😎
This is a movie, if you rewatch , you catch more, and more. 😁✌️👍
George Nelson was 25 when he died! :o
👍
We ain't one at a time it here were mass comminicating......
You people seem old enough to have seen the movie at the time of its release. No? How did you miss it?
Sopranos?
Same. Eagerly awaiting.
Sopranos will return on the normal Friday timeslot! 😄
