    I bought the new Hermes Bronzer due to my fomo. Got it today & it is pretty. Then I remembered it cost me $105 to relieve my fomo for one item. After watching this great video, I think I’m ready to stop the FOMO cycle.

    I loved this video! FOMO in makeup releases has caused me to obsess over not getting something for days! I succeed in my strict no buy in February but the FOMO made me feel ill the first few days. I succeeded but I was surprised at how hard it was. I am so glad I found your channel❤❤

      I agree. It is hard. Its is about creating new pathways in the brain that has been used to enjoy focus on shopping rather than other things. This is why i decided to pay for audible to distract my brain thinking about shopping, and i try jogging more and learn stuff to pass the time....and also begin being more social and being thinking about how i might could help society and feel less lonley and sad which could trigger a quick search for solution which could be shopping. I also cannot afford anything more either, need cash if pc breaks etc

    Oh man 👀😐😐I so despise companies who create FOMO by fake scarcity!! Lots of luxury companies have been doing this for the last years. They keep everyone confused or misinformed of launch dates including their own sales associates, unclear about availability and sometimes even price with products randomly popping up across multiple different retailers in different countries for a couple months and each time selling out super fast. Even people who are long standing high paying costumers may struggle to get the product. Eventually it suddenly launches properly across multiple sites 😤 its utterly manipulative and downright atrocious customer treatment

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Год назад +3

      Yes! Definitely not a fan of fake scarcity either. You've highlighted some good examples. I think another one is limited edition, and the restock after. I think now limited edition stuff tends is more often than not actually limited edition as compared to 3-5 years ago.

    “Passive identity creation”-damn, but you’re spot on with that! This is what I love about this mindful consumer mindset: once you get into the habit of considering and reflecting on your buying decisions, it’s easier to resist those impulses that are based on other people’s opinions rather than your own.
    I like to think I’m somewhat immune to the FOMO impulse, but that’s not altogether true. The most recent example I can think of are trendy sneakers. I’ve heard so much about New Balance and Adidas Sambas the past year that I got to the point where I started browsing for them, and I recall specifically feeling the sting of FOMO when I saw that a particular colorway of Samba was out of stock. I heard a piece of advice from a different content creator recently: “When you’re looking at something new you want to buy, give the things you already own the advantage over the new thing.” It helped me step back and acknowledge that I didn’t want that shoe, my desire was almost completely bound up in what other people deemed “cool,” when I already HAVE shoes that are perfectly FINE, even if they’re not in the color of the moment!

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Год назад +1

      I definitely agree about the mindful consumer comment. Once you learn what you like it's easier to say no. Also having a clear budget helps too. I've founf that once i started thinking in this way the more I wanted to learn, and then found answers and it became a cycle. Like, what else can I learn? It feels so good to learn and improve and change habits and see the fruits of that labour.
      Your shoe example is really good!

    Oh my god. I just realised that wanting an odens eye palette was just fomo to me, because they’re quickly sold out! Yet. The color stories are not my style at all (love myself a winter themed colour story) and I should not feel guilty about purchasing something else which serves me. Same goes for skin care and clothing.
    This came when I needed it thank you! Really opened my eyes.

    Oh my godd! I literally just came home after going out with my girlfriends, one of them was showing the spring clothes she got and i got sooo much fomo regarding my clothing no buy!! We have the same body type and those will look so good on her and i wanted something like that so bad that i started to break a little bit.. And now i come home to this?? Oh my god i really hope you will make me touch some grass (as always ❤)

      This is a great observation! To know you're experiencing FOMO and that it's playing a role in wanting to shop is so powerful because it's like knowing your desires are 'artificially created' even though they feel so real. If you never saw them you never would have wanted them (or something similar).

    Man, the countdown timers… I know that there are situations where they serve a functional purpose, as you mentioned, and I totally understand the use of timers in those cases. But there are SO many instances where the timer is, as you said, completely artificial and once you’re aware of it, it’s so blatantly a psychological trigger. I know marketing is just a part of life, but man, I really HATE the feeling of being marketed to (pandered to?) sometimes!

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Год назад

      totally feel you! If you're going to use a timer please have it actually mean something and just an artificial one to trigger spending 😕

    Thank you so much for posting this video, it was exactly what I was looking for! I recently got back into painting my nails and started following an Indie brand that often creates limited edition polishes. I have been feeling something I haven't experienced in a long time and I couldn't figure out what was happening to me. I was extremely excited, but I realized I wasn't going to be making the best choices if I lived in that place. Your video helped bring me back down to earth. I have worked hard trying to figure out what I love in life and following this trend will not help me continue to figure out the things that bring me joy. Luckily it didn't take long to get back here, it could have been much worse 😅

    Love your work Shauna!! Makeup FOMO is definitely exaggerated by marketing trends! I'm curious on what your thoughts are on Marlena Stell's "7 things the makeup industry doesn't want you to know" video? You could do a reaction vid on how it relates to makeup overspending. 💸

    Oh that count down clock! I got sucked into buying a sweet linen dress at a 25% discount without much thinking because the sale was over in 4 hours...and it was a great deal (also, basically a dupe of a more expensive brand). Well, it's been a week and I've noticed pretty much every time I go to that etsy store the countdown is almost over...I think they reset it daily...

      Ugh it’s horrible. I haven’t made a purchase based on the timer, but when the website says “in 3 carts and only 1 left” I’ve fallen for that. Sometimes I message the seller and ask if it’ll be available after this last one sells. That helps me be less impulsive cause the seller usually says it’ll be restocked at some point

    Lately there's so much FOMO with the latest indie brands and their releases in make up which is creating a lot of stress IMO as they don't even have the stock to meet the demand in many cases. Items sell out the same day or within minutes so you literally can't think about the purchase for a while and after you need to catch preorders and waiting weeks or months for the product! People might not even care about it anymore once you finally receive it. I get why it's difficult for indie companies to manage the crazy demands of hype... Some deal better than others, quite a few also clearly actively count on the FOMO ... I myself just don't wanna do it anymore. I'm tired of it and that cycle. No eye shadow is worth this madness 👀

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Год назад +1

      Another great point! I know people who've waited 4-8 months for their orders to be fulfilled after they've bought a collab product from an indie brand and that's not even pre-order.

    I struggle with fomo when it comes to skincare and everybody knows how stupid it is to buy tons of skincare because it expires real quick. Now I have day creams worth for 5+ years and feel guilty if I don't use them up or that I can't gift them to anybody else because I want to use them all. A cream no buy is one of the obvious things I did, but the amount of cream in my drawers stresses me out. How to handle this?

    I don’t think age has anything to do with FOMO because I’m 63 and have anxiety and FOMO still. In around 2017 I started subbing to Boxycharm and Ipsy, Allure, Birchbox, and Sephora beauty boxes and spending hours upon hours watching beauty RUclips tons of hauls, collection videos, organization videos which influenced me to buy two 9-drawer and a 5-drawer Alex units from ikea as well as tons of big acrylic drawer sets and shopping at Ulta and especially Mercari buying makeup until all my storage was full like it currently is. I obsess over new releases right now it’s Elf and all their new liquid blushes and new cream product brushes, lip oils and new stuff they just dropped. My cart is up to $100 and I keep taking stuff out and putting it back in and just thinking about it all the time. I have cut down my Mercari spending as I used to spend $100-300 a month on makeup especially new releases and limited edition collectors pieces no longer for sale. It’s ridiculous and causing me financial hardship and preventing me from saving any money. I really enjoy your content and am on a low buy, I get Ipsy/Boxy, Allure and Eye Scream beauty boxes but I pick and choose what months to put on hold or purchase so it’s not every month anymore with Ipsy/Boxycharm boxes. This has to do with my fantasy self of wanting to be a beauty RUclipsr and loving a large beautiful makeup collection. I have more skincare than I’ll ever be able to use so I have to start selling and giving it away. Such a waste of money (nothing was full price they all came from beauty box subs at least). It’s a problem to say the least!❤😊
