    Shout out to the King Arthur fandom, originators of fanfiction and AU; where they found a guy mentioned once in a book written 300 years after him, and was extrapolated another 400 years later into a figure of myth and legend for the next eight hundred years with dozens of writers further extrapolating off of the first.

    Hot take: Tulok should do more Public Domain characters. They're easy to get footage for, most of them are pretty straightforward, and it doesn't require you to watch over 500 episodes of a series just to know what to get. I'm very happy we have as many DBZ builds as we have, but the Big 3 are gonna take a while. Especially One Piece. Also, that True Strike bit hit hard cuz I'm in Florida & a hurricane is coming so my parents bought bottled water in case things got bad

    But the Green Knight didn't ask for his head to be cut off. He arrived and said "I challenge anyone here to hurt me, but know that I will return in a year to do the same to you." Gawain was the one who chose to cut his head off, because then how could the Green Knight return to do it?
    So it came as a great shock to the court when the Green Knight picked his head up and said, "okay, I'll see you in a year."

    While it may seem like it takes a while for the build to come online, Arthur's story starts when he's just a kid named Wart. You can literally play out the hero's journey with this build if you wanted.

  • @TBoring
    @TBoring Год назад +100

    Three things I’d change about the build:
    1. I’d start with Paladin to get Heavy Armor proficiency
    2. Trade out True Strike for Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade (not necessarily in character but it helps with damage output until you get Extra Attack)
    3. I’d go with Oath of The Crown. The Channel Divinity options seem more in character and it’s sort of the king swearing an oath to his kingdom. Sure you miss out on Haste but you get Spirit Guardians (which you could flavor as your knights coming to your side to protect you)

      Excalibur is notably similar to a legendary Welsh sword called Dyrnwyn, which when drawn by someone worthy would have a flaming blade.
      Thus, Green Flame Blade could actually work in this context.

      @@James-zr8vi Caledfwylch is distinct from Dyrnwyn. However, some of the Welsh legends specifically refer to Caledfywlch blazing, either with something like fire or actual fire (ambiguous how metaphorical it is) and an implied mesmerizing or fear effect, so it does still work well enough.

    This was pretty awesome. It’s not easy making a build for something with as much variance in source material as King Arthur, so massive props.
    That said, most basic fighters would be more efficient in combat than this build. The three different spell lists are nice, but of all the characters in the legends known for their magical abilities, you’re not one of them. Excalibur is cool, but it’s probably just a +1 sword with a scabbard that casts death ward on you.

    • @MandalorV7

      unfortunately D&D doesn't like martials shining too brightly, so the only way to make the mighty warriors of myth and legend in D&D RAW is by investing caster levels or magical equipment. And Tulok likes to build characters around assuming no magical equipment so we get lots of caster levels in warrior-like characters. Basically Tulok's build is more focused on emulating having a magical sword rather than actually having a magical sword.

    • @lodewijkboute2311
      @lodewijkboute2311 Год назад +2

      @@jcama2412 I second that! Most of his builds tend to lean towards a DM/GM that is quite a miser about giving magical items. And Class abilities are the only abilities a DM/GM has (some) difficulty to remove, because it's still "within the rules".
      I have been playing the game for almost 28 years by now and I did had my fair share of DM's/GM's that were not very keen on giving items away.
      On the other hand, if this is not the case at the table, then I would focus a bit more on the martial side of the build and relying on the party to have the magic buffs on your "Arthur" character. I totally dig the levels in Bard: especially as a mythic king whoms authority was seldom questioned. (the low Wisdom is also appropriated fot the reasons Tulok stated).
      With a DM/GM not afraid to give some items and a supportive group of magic users, I would limit the multiclassing in the other caster classes to only a dip of 1 or 2 levels (Bard being the exception).
      But, hey, the advantage with all the different iterations that exist out there about King Arthur, you can go on many different paths into building him. :)

    This is an absolutely fantastic build, but i think there is a mistake here, Hexblade doesn't let you use Cha with two-handers until Pact of the Blade at level 3. In this build if you want to continue to use Cha with Excalibur, it'll need to be a one-hander (Longsword). At pally2, the Fighting Style should prolly be Dueling

    • @Furiora
      @Furiora Год назад +3

      Longswords are versitile though. Hex Warrior just states "the two-handed property" not versitile weapons. Excalibur is often dipicted as a bastard sword in media, which is what the D&D longsword is, so great weapon fighting makes sense if you plan to lean into two-handing it.
      Both are viable though as dueling gives 1d8+2 for min of 2, while two-handing gives 1d10 with a re-roll of 1s and 2s. Dueling is more consistant, but great weapon will give a bigger boost to crits.
      So it's all down to how you want to flavour your Arthur.

      Having said that, which minorities are being represented? There are countless ways of dividing up a population, and an electoral college will favor certain minorities much more than others. Really, the fact that the electors don't have to follow the vote of the constituents they represent means that the only minority that gets representation is the small population of electors.

    The things I like about your builds, Tulok, is the fact that they are great sources of inspiration! I have used many of your builds in the games I played with only some minor tweaks to better suit the theme of the campaign I'm playing in. You do the groundwork with each of those builds and that groundwork is rock solid. With a solid base, it is a lot easier to start fine tuning here and there.

      More that, it depends on the author. There are at least three distinct sources/traditions for Arthurian Legend (disregarding whether one of them might the original that the others are derivative of), and the one that dominates modern conceptions is both the youngest (Norman/French) and the one with the greatest amount of mutation over time. Whether there even _was_ a kingmaker sword, and whether it was identified with or distinct from Excalibur varied by author about as far back as the concept of a kingmaker sword shows up in the legends.

    Level 13 Paladin would let you score a critical divine smite with the maximum damage dice (level 4 spell slot), I think it is more flavorful and fun than +1 Ac and a bonus action heal.
    Also for people wanting to play this, I would not suggest building your character with Extra attack after level 8, I got it at level 11 in a campaign and went from being a medium tank/healer to the highest dpr in a party full of casters and could have done so sooner if I planned it out that way.

    I know it's a DND build and who cares if everything isn't 100% accurate BUT, hexblade isn't actually a pact with a magic weapon it's supposed to be a patron from the shadowfell that MAKES magical swords like the raven queen or... Someone else I guess and Excalibur is a holy sword so in MY OPINION it would actually be a celestial patron but I don't think hexblade was necessarily a bad choice also I like your videos they're really fun for inspiration for my own builds.
