BMW R1200RT Ignition Coil Deconstruction

  • Ever wonder what's inside an ignition coil or how they work? In this video I'll cut open a damaged BMW ignition coil from an R1200RT motorcycle so we can see how it is constructed. Other coil-on-plug designs will be similar to this one.

    Another great video, Thanks! PLEASE consider doing final drive teardown. I'd love to be able to replace the bearing back there and don't really even know where to start. I understand it's a pretty complicated job involving a real bearing press, but even if you did need to involve a machine shop, for the difficult parts, a video on the rest could be of real value to people who's final drives are really starting to show their age.

      Don't jinx me! The work you see in the videos is done on my personal bike, so I'd rather not need the opportunity to rebuild my final drive. I do think there are some other videos which might help you, remember that the GS model is similar in many ways to the RT. You can search for GS model final drive rebuilds too.

    Hi John, interesting issue there. I suppose there are many variables to create that worn out condition. I have 2016 RT with nearly 68K miles. This video has my thinking about replacing these parts. I haven't looked so I'll ask, are there better aftermarket coils available?

      The replacement coils I have used are made by Endurolast and sold by a retailer in the US called Euromotoelectrics. I don't think there is a lot of choice about the coils, it's either the dealer or a handful of aftermarket companies. I did see some generic asian-made coils for sale, but they looked sketchy. There's really no reason to replace them unless you know they are failing electrically or they actually fall apart. That said, your kind of mileage is a lot for the original coils. Even on cars and trucks this style of coil tends to start failing around 75K miles, though some will last longer.

      The lifespan can vary greatly. Much depends on how the bike is ridden, riding conditions and how the coils are handled during maintenance. Heat is what usually kills them off, so if you do long days on the bike with rides lasting 6-8 hours the coils will not last as long as those ridden for shorter periods.
