    Beautiful work and exquisite detailing...Thanks for the upload
    I've been a carpenter for 30 years...I wish I had the patience and the time to do carving work like that...Nobody pays for hand crafted anymore...Sad.

      They are used to decorate "Ranma" (an openwork screen above the sliding partitions between two rooms) for shrines and temples so it takes a few weeks to complete one.

    • @WoodworkingEnthusiasts

      artists certainly follow a specific plan because this techniques had their origins in architectural embellishments on pillars and Ranma (an openwork screen above the sliding partitions between two rooms) for shrines and temples and subsequently developed and were polished through the creation of decorative sculptures on Dashi (floats) and Mikoshi (portable shrines) for festivals.

    Japan...dedicated to traditional crafts and arts. Craftsmanship is offered at a *reasonable* price for what's involved and customers are willing to pay for it. Patiently wait looking forward to seeing the final product.
    'MERICA... Throw plywood on a.CnC router/ lazer table.
    Down load graphics program for cookie cutter "whatever".
    Customer bitches it "costs to much" ".....but I want it right this second."
    (Living in Japan isn't all sunshine and lollipops. Actually a pain in the arse in some ways. But that ain't one of them.)

    I was wondering if he was, what, going to rub it till a design appears or what. I mean thats how I do it but, you know... Just rub it till something happens.
    "No knives", that's a good one. And they have a website where you can buy not any kind of knife. Language barrier I guess. It's cool. It was still an enjoyable video.

      Do you cut your steak with a chisel or a knife? Do they sell chisels with kitchen knife sets? Can I buy a folding pocket chisel somewhere?
      What I'm getting at is a chisel and a knife aren't the same thing! Wow! two different things aren't the same thing. Isn't that amazing?
      Living up to that american military standard huh?

  • @flymasterA
    @flymasterA 5 лет назад +1

    Sorry, but a chisel IS a short shaped knife used with the hands, hammers, or with a lathe.

  • @rebeccadonaldson1464

    Carving Gouges (NOT Chisels or Knives) may be sharpened on the end for a push cut OR may be used for a slicing cut (like a knife) by the way it approaches the wood, moving the blade sideways as it cuts, as well as forwards. If you have a Skew Gouge then this is Precisely for slicing (like a knife) cuts.
    Carpenters have Gouges as well as Chisels. These can be either "In-Canel" or "Out-Canel" sharpened and are totally different in purpose and shape from Carving Gouges; or Turning Gouges which are different again as the Turning Gouge rides the wood on its bevel.
    A Carving Gouge that looks Flat is NOT flat, it just has a Very Large radius to the cross-section. If it were flat it would leave marks along the wood from the edges when a carver was trying to smooth a Field. A Carpenter does exactly the same thing, for the same reason, with a Smoothiing Plane blade which is sharpened with a large radius and NOT straight across like a Jack plane.
    How can you, "preserve and promote the beauty of these traditional products" when you know SO LITTLE of the basics of any profession's tools and how they are tuned and sharpened. Then you disrespect your viewers by Failing to put accurate translations in subtitles, of what the craftsman is saying. How can we learn anything when you are so deficient?

    Aside from the attempt at deception in the title.. this was quite interesting .. It would have been just as interesting if a more appropriate and honest title was posted with the video.

    A chisel is a kind of knife.

    • @CinePote
      @CinePote 5 лет назад

      Wholeheartedly agree with you, instead of a elongated cutting blade, a short one is used in a chisel or planner, many ways to skin a cat

    • @SimplyReg
      @SimplyReg 5 лет назад +1

      @@CinePote Yes. A chisel is more efficient with a pressure cut rather than a slicing cut because of the physics of force/unit area, but it certainly does both. It's also better than a conventional knife blade
      at leverage cuts for removing waste.

    • @rebeccadonaldson1464
      @rebeccadonaldson1464 5 лет назад

      @@CinePote A "Plane" is the tool. A "Planer" is the person using it. A "Planner" is someone who makes Plans.

    • @rebeccadonaldson1464
      @rebeccadonaldson1464 5 лет назад

      @@SimplyReg If you use ANY Carving tool as a lever it will destroy the edge immediately.
      Carpenters have "Registered Lock Chisels" or "Mortise Chisels" and these are the only ones designed to do the levering of waste as well as cutting. They are different from all other Carving, Carpenters', or Turners Tools.
