- Here's Marilyn singing the number 15 song, a duet with Carl Wilson, on SOLID GOLD's "Hits of Summer" special, "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. I think this is from June or July of 1984. I have lots of videos to share of Marilyn McCoo singing covers, duets and more from her Solid Gold years. Hope my fellow McCoo fans enjoy them... Music arranged and produced by Solid Gold's musical director, Michael Miller.
Carl Wilson was MUCH more handsome than many of today's stars, from film and music, and he was such a gentle soul, never a tantrum when things didn't go his way, unlike some could mention!!God rest your soul, beautiful man.

Two great singers doing a great song. Carl left us far too early at age 51 dying from lung cancer. He may have been in early stages of the illness when this broadcast was made. He was the best singer in the beach boys

He died 24 years ago today. Of all the songs of the Beach Boys, this one is my favorite. I love Carl's voice on this song and the song itself. Marilyn sounds great on the song too! You too should have done more duets.
I met Carl working out at Bally's in Akron in the late 1980's. He couldn't have been nicer.

It's funny how Carl's voice is SWEETER than Marilyn's. Such a talent. Now he's entertaining the Angels in Heaven. I wish we had better sound quality on this video. You can hear it's a bit warbled. Still, I absolutely love Carl's change on the end of the song with the long .."God only knows......" Wow, gives me goosebumps! Thanks for posting!!

I saw Carl at a "Solid Gold" taping in 1985...he sang "Hold Me" with a new band. I was the biggest fan in the audience, and he acknowledged my cheers at the end! Love the real Beach Boys.....
Two beautiful people singing a lovely duet of a beautiful song. I thought the poor sound was because of my computer and tried hard to make it louder. I hope they will always keep this duet on RUclips. We lost a few interesting Carl interviews because RUclips took them off.

Marilyn McCoo was one of my favorite female vocalists. As a kid with a radio, I tried to sound like her singing along with all the 5th Dimension songs, which were great and many written by Laura Nyro. This is a great video to see Carl and Marilyn singing together.

This duet should've been released on a Beach Boys album, and I swear this song was originally released in the 60's.
It was. 1966 on Pet Sounds.
Man, Carl Wilson could sing this song like nobody's business. Honestly, I found myself wishing McCoo would just keep quiet and let him sing, and she was great in the 5th Dimension. Her ad lib stylizing just throws a rock at a beautiful, delicate song.
A smoker from the time he was 13? It's amazing that some of the singers with such pure singing tones were heavy smokers. Too bad. I love hearing this song in all it's forms.

Brian was Trying to outdo his own Pet Sounds and mabey Sargent Pepper... Thats a lot of pressure..... but it all ended well, he did "THe Smile Concert in England, and recieved his accolades... Just My Opinion... But On Some of his music, Its almost like listening to something Miraculous....And there is a lot of Hate for Mike Love, but Mike was perfect for the beach boys, not a sensitive bone in his Body, Perfect Front man for the Group....Id love to see all of them together again..Just Once...

Because Mike Love caused most of the problems in the group. I think he was jealous of the other men Brian picked to write his lyrics. Mike Love was so nasty he drove Va the man who wrote the lyrics, Van Dyke, AWAY. Brian hated to go to the studio always having Mike complaining about his music. Mike sued Brian repeatedly. He sued Al. Also Mike is still insulting Brian 50 years later bringing up Brian was on drugs. We Know that. It's past history. Where would Mike be without Brian, today?

Just hearing Brian and Marilyn sing this makes me wonder if The Fifth Dimension weren't influenced by Pet Sounds with soul twist.
To Davan Mani, Sir, this is the Late-Great Carl Wilson singing " GOK" ; Brian wrote it, but Carl sang it on Pet Sounds, & for the rest of his life, it was his signature song. When I saw this on "SG", I was just blown away; consider that it's Marilyn --the one with the 4 octave vocal range !--who sings under Carl. It's a tribute to both that this duet stands as one of Marilyn's all-time favorites from the "SG" years. Carl was the heart of The Beach Boys. Wolfsky9, 68 y/o
