- On 26 April 1986, it was decided at Chernobyl to take advantage of reactor number four's downtime by carrying out a safety test on an emergency core cooling feature.
At 1.24 am, an engineer recorded in his diary that the protective system was not working. At the same moment, a huge and catastrophic surge in power caused two explosions.
As fires raged, the core of reactor number four was destroyed. A huge cloud rose into the sky, spreading large amounts of radioactive fuel and materials into the atmosphere.

It's really sad that they wouldn't let surrounding areas know when Chernobyl blew up at the time when it happened . There would have been a lot less loss of life and I actually remember hearing about it at that time I was like 11 years old after it became public.

If those firefighter's didnt pump water out of the reactor's cooling tanks as well as the three men that climbed into the tanks and shut the vavles. It would have caused a reaction with the core "as it was melting into the concrete right above the tanks" it would have resulted in a large nuclear explosion "steam and debree" that would have made much of europe uninhabitable for years.
I'd say theres still much that we dont know about that fateful day.

That’s not the core. The glow is from the core. The “coin” shaped object you see on its side is the reactor lid. It weighed about 2000 tons and was tossed up way into the air like a flipped quarter and it landed back like that on its side.
To add to my previous reply, the core is actually quite deep in the debris.

The AZ-5 button is for the test they had to use it, if they did spend the money on the plant to make it perfect intend of saving money, it would have never happend
@@anamikaanamika517 the AZ-5 button is used for a total reactor shutdown by activating all control rods at once, that wasn’t part of the test it was used as a fail safe after testing went wrong, how is everyone so misinformed

It was not a test on an emergency cooling system. Its was a turbine rundown test. It was to see how long the turbines, both TG 7 and TG 8, could keep spinning for until the backup diesel generators would kick in and take over from the turbines pumping water through the core. The test had been delayed for months. Unit 4 had been in commercial operation for just over 3 years at the time if the accident and the test should have been done way before when it was completed in 1983.
I remember when this happened. So sad.

I've never seen this footage... is that real, where you can see in red colours (I guess at night) how the reactor seems to be burning? Was this moment really recorded in the very night of the accident?
it is true, you can even search up 'chernobyl' and you'll see pictures of the fallen structures and buildings, and evem the theme park that was probably there. you can also see a picture of a baby, that's head is bigger. due to radioactive air near.
@@great_flames That wasn't my question. I only asked about the scenes where you can see the fire / reactor burning which seems to be in the very night that the accident happened. But I don't think that this was recorded. No fireman takes cameras with him in case of an emergency like that.

You are showing the map of Ukraine and talking about "Ukrainianian authorities tried to hide the disaster".. How can you show responsible a nation and a country for the wrong decisions of the Soviet Union while they were not independent? + It was not lead what they dropped but boron and sand. Lead was used for giving some protection for the likvidators against radiation. Please take more care as journalists to be historically and scientifically correct. Thank you!

it is known to have design defects, the most notable is the positive void coefficient (read up on it its worth it)
secondly given the poor operational usage by the men in charge, leaving the rods out of coolant so long they became warped and wouldnt move under heat/stress.
false readings from inside the core led operators to leave rods out for longer than required,
power dropped way below expected and acceptable levels,
then spiked rapidly.
by this time it was self sustaining and a bomb waiting to happen

My paternal grandparents both died not long after Chernobyl due to the Radiation Fallout which spread. They were living in Zhlobin, Belarus SSR which is 255km away.

So, I’m on my monthly time right now and watched an episode of Chernobyl. At the end of the episode, a bird died from the radiation, so I started crying thinking of all the dogs that died because of Chernobyl. I’m a sensitive little girl, and it just broke my heart. 😂 like, imagine adopting a new puppy the day of the explosion and then it having to be killed because it’s now radioactive. Oh no... Even most of the technicians knew they should have stopped the test but they were threatened by their overseer Anatoly Dyatlov to continue the tests. Even after all the mistakes He made sure the tests continued. And that my friends is why we don't go to work sleep-deprived and ill-tempered

It's crazy to think about.. one small push of a button caused a disaster.
Despite what the Chernobyl miniseries said, pushing AZ-5 didn't cause the explosion. It was already doomed, pushing the button just sped up the process by a few seconds.
