How to display YouTube Chat with OBS Studio Custom Docks

- In this video I show how you can use OBS studio custom docks to be able to bring in your RUclips live chat when streaming on OBS Studio. This will NOT work on Streamlabs obs.
the custom dock feature is only in obs studio and not for streamlabs obs. This tutorial focuses only on obs studio to display the chat. To learn more about browser source & chatbox watch the following videos below. Those videos apply to Streamlabs OBS and OBS Studio.

Also if it says “something went wrong” when you post the chat url you cant have the stream private. It must be public or unlisted.
UPDATE: 5/18/21 - a fellow viewer did some digging and found this info below
"One of the web developers from OBS addressed this very issue. They said: "This is entirely up to Google. We use CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework) to power the browser, and last year they decided to block it.
In my experience, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. We have no plans on faking a Chrome browser to bypass these restrictions." (source: github.com/obsproject/obs-browser/issues/246)
So, essentially, Google is blocking OBS half of the time and OBS has no workaround nor will be providing one."
POSSIBLE WORK AROUNDS!
1. update google chrome.
2. reset your google chrome settings to default
3. pop out the chat from your watch page to view/chat in it. You can still use this video method to display it on stream though, just cannot type into it unless its popped out.
**If I find other methods I will update this pinned comment. Sadly it works for some people and not everyone and I cannot find out why other than Google blocking it for some of you.**

you can also just login into your account in the popup and it fixes it!

Hey, at 1:33 you typed something in chat and it almost immediately showed up on OBS, mines takes about 8 seconds and I have my stream latency at ultra low and my OBS stream delay is at 1 sec. Do you think you could help with this?

If you leave the custom browser dock with the chat there, without actually showing it on the stream. The chat will work anyway right?

Make sure it’s public and then try it again. Also try different browsers if it doesn’t pop out.

Hello! My chat theme is always set to white on OBS even though its set to dark on my browser, do you know any way to fix it?

When you are on your creative dashboard for streaming just redo the pop out chat once you go live. Something that fixes it. You can also have your stream up on the browser and pop the chat out from there and will sometimes fix it. You have to be live tho.

Does this overlay on screen captures of video games?
This video is just for the chat. If you want to capture video games too its a different source in obs.
How do i get the chat to a rectangle? Mine is being funky when i try and resize it.
Like how to get the custom dock to have the chat in a rectangle spot? If so just click and drag it above the stream preview and then drag the line at the bottom to resize it.
If you are talking about something else like resizing a chatbox browser source to w rectangle that is different from what this video is showcasing.
how do you get the "enter chat here" & "top/live chat" bars to go away?
You can crop it out by hold alt and drag down and up on the source. Another option is to use the chatbox from streamelements.

Thanks for the info. You deserve more subs. Quick question, does anyone know how to perhaps make that chat box a bit more transparent for RUclips chat? I tried with the chroma key different color variations, but it takes away the text on the screen and only shows a few things. Tried adjusting similarity colors but doesn't work.
EDIT: Figured it out, you need to pick "Color Key" and not Chroma Key.

If you right click on the source you can select blend mode and choose one that you want

If you want to type in chat from obs you have to change it each time but I think obs now updates it

Yes if it shows up on any of your scenes then the chat will be in the vod. Now if you stream on youtube and set it up through the browser there is an option for live replay to be included so the chat shows up on the side too.

You will need to have obs up on a separate monitor to see it.

Welcome! So its not an option anyone has. You have to make it yourself using the custom docks. This video shows how.

I have trouble with this on my M1 Mac mini. everything you say is perfect. when I hover over the chat it asks me to log in. I click the log in button and OBS crashes. :(

Once I have made my chat dock and go to testing if its working the chat asks me to log into RUclips. When I do so it gives me the message "Couldn’t sign you in
. This browser or app may not be secure. Try using a different browser. If you’re already using a supported browser, you can refresh your screen and try again to sign in." What would the solution or work around to this be?

My chat link changes every stream and I have to update it every time. Is there a way around that?
No way around it.

If I play a game, do I really have to change from game to OBS or RUclipsStudio just to type in the chat or is there another method? I don't have 2 screens to work with.
You need two screens or you'll have to keep going back in fourth. You can always have chat on your phone by going to the stream on your phone and type that way

I can't put the chat box to the left the way you can, it wants me to put it into this outlined thing at the very top of the screen in obs studio and when I do that it just makes the chat all goofed up and I can't fix it.
If you have se.live plug installed you can move it anywhere

My goodness, one would think streaming to a big service like youtube would have bugs like this fixed. Is there more compatible streaming software for youtube streaming?
Yeah RUclips definitely has some work to do but the only streaming software is xsplit, streamlabs obs, and obs studio to my knowledge.

How to overlay this chat if I was in a fullscreen game? So I can see the chat as well as my viewers?
If obs has a game overlay option like streamlabs does then you'll want to use that otherwise you need multiple monitors and add a chat box widget on the screen
@@CreoVox OBS doesn't. there are workarounds like making a browser window transparent and just overlaying it onto a game but you need to run borderless and I don't want to. OBS goes wiggy. damn why is this so hard?
Do you know if you can view chat logs/replays on OBS? I didn't have chat on during a recording and also my recording doesn't show up on my twitch.

Yup. On the twitch website you login click on your avatar then go to either settings or creator dashboard

This requires 2 screens. 1 screen for gaming and another screen for obs and chat.
@@CreoVox i saw a guy streaming with his chat transparent and over the gameplay screen... it looked awesome.... i asked him about it, and he only told me it is all in OBS... would you know anything about how to do that??? i've been wreaking my brain all evening trying to figure that out
@VALxTheForeverGamer it's the I'm game overlay settings in obs. Just look that up and add my name at the end and my tutorial should come up. I think I show only how to do it in streamlabs but it's the same process. Also not all games work with it just keep that in mind.

Answered my question! Too bad YT Live isn't like twitch where we can just use 3rd party extensions to have a permanent chat. I believe this is due to the dynamic URL Chat link. But anyway, this solves my issue for displaying chat while on RUclips Live!
Yeah I hope youtube does some integration rework so we can have a permanent chat in encoders vs this current workaround.
Have you thought about other workarounds like restream and streamelements? Are those any good compared to using this?
Sometimes streamelements will pull in the chat but its been 50/50 for me. As for Restream I think that one works all the time but I dont restream.

This has been really helpful. What if I have a chat theme from Streamlabs I want to use for the RUclips Chatbox. I Stream on youtube also and cannot get the theme to work. Is there a way to use that? Thanks
Themes like the fonts are all changed? If so then no. If it’s just like the chatbox border is themed then yes you just need to use a browser source for when you pop out the chat.

@@kaynugget2885 yeah twitch is the only one that I’m aware of. RUclips hasn’t really put a focus on streaming but hopefully they do.

When I paste the link into the browser source, it creates an invisible box outline with no chat window
did you create an unlisted live stream > pop out the stream chat > then take that link and add it as a browser source?

How did you login on OBS since its not a supported browser
Obs you don’t need to login, you just need your stream key. Now if you use obs.live that requires logging into stream elements on obs which is found on the top menu bar under stream elements. If you just want to use a custom dock you just follow this video.
Does it show after stream, Cause when i stream the chat doesnt show after the stream is done and uploaded and looks like im talking to no one and spitting pure bs
yeah if it shows up when you are live then it will be there in the vod.
i can display the chat in OBS but as soon as i want to type something (like you did at 1:34 ) it says i need to log in, when i log in it says "This browser or app may not be secure" how do i fix this???
Are you able to hit something to allow it to go passed that? I never ran into that message so I don’t know.

Can't change font. To make it transparent right click on the source > filters > add color correction > lower the opacity

The chatbox is an awkward size and not transparent, so it blocks up a chunk of screen area. Any way around that?
This is just to show you how to read it on obs. If you are reading it popped out then you are doing it incorrectly. This requires 2 monitors.
What you need to do is set up an "overlay" that will have separated designated areas for things like your chat box, your video feed and other important things to your presentation you are wanting. This will though take some of the screen "real estate" away from your streamed video content by doing this but many folks including myself like this and many do not as well, so it is really a try and see how you feel about it sort of thing. I am just starting to transition myself to RUclips from Twitch after years over there, so if you want an example of how this would look msg me and I can help further but I am not here to plug my self or streams [streamer etiquette is still a thing as is respect] just here to try to learn like you and help if I can like now.
Once you have an "overlay" image you will still need to custom size your video stream to fit the section you have for that and move it over to it and do some "layering" but its not hard to learn and soon master.

sign into the account you want to chat with when it asks you to sign in on the chat or just type in on the web page in the youtube dashboard.

Your videos perfect and easy to follow but I think they changed the something or I'm more lost than I thought.
But when I click the 3 dots in thr live chat box it only shows "manage moderators, toggle timestamps and zend feedback".
Hmm not sure why its different from you. I just checked for me and it allowed me to pop out the chat. Are you streaming on RUclips or somewhere else?
