    Taliesin has such a good way of making Percy likable while making him a stuck-up prick at times - it's a balance of multiple character traits, all spinning around, mixing, and constantly developing. When I can say "Episode 1 Percy would never have done that" to his latest action, I really see the complexity within. He's never just the quiet guy who does 60 damage a turn followed by a smart remark. Matt sure blindsided him with just how twisted a tale his backstory would weave into, and he rolled with it to the point that the outcome changed Percy.
    I'm not all caught up yet, maybe 60% there, but it'll be interesting to see where his character leads, answering the question of "When someone makes a colossal mistake, then believes that said mistake is the right and just thing for years, what do they do once they learn the extent of their one grievous error?" It's been fun seeing both the before and after of that realization.

    I played an archer once... swift, elegant, clean, effective... a model fighter.
    then I played a dwarf....
    I had more fun having that dwarf be a total wreck, than I had having the archer be the absolute boss.
    plus, nothing beats the good ol' hammer to the face introduction.

    I hate seeming fanboyish, but the CR crew seem like really great people, and Taliesin really sticks out to me personally. He's smart and funny and well-spoken, but in a more subdued way than Mercer and the others, and I really like that. Plus, guy has real style! ;)

    • @Incurafy
      @Incurafy 7 лет назад +2

      Honestly, they really are a group of amazing people. You only have to watch the behind the scenes stuff on Critical Scope to confirm it. Taliesin sticks out for me too, so much so that I'm growing my hair to emulate his purple mohawk (fanboy confirmed). I would kill to have the whole cast sign my PHB and for Matt to sign my DMG and MM, but sadly being in Australia, it's pretty unlikely.

    • @NameIsNew

      I was never someone to hardcore fan over other people. Voice actors, actual actors, bands, whatever. It's when I get to see how cool someone can be that I want to be around them and get their attention. So I agree, Critical Role has let me see how awesome those who are a part of it (as well as a number of their guest stars) can be.
      I even met Travis once years ago. I worked with him at an event. I was asked to interface with him since everyone else in our organization was a big fan. I didn't exactly get to know him, so I didn't know how genuinely awesome he is, and now that I watch Critical Role I almost feel like I missed an opportunity haha.

    Ok having started D&D recently because of the show and getting to both play and DM with new and experienced players, the most fun to be, play for, and play with are those characters who are playing out a story. Min-maxing and whatnot is kinda only fun for a few people, and it only really does something for that one person. Playing an "already-a-hero" is honestly much more boring and making my characters' and my players' stories about the journey rather than the destination is just... the best :P because the unknown is so exciting. It's like... knowing the ending to a movie or a book takes some of the fun out of it.

  • @samgardner8456

    Taliesin understands that the most powerful characters are not the most interesting or fun to play. Not that he builds mechanically handicapped characters either...

    • @browncoatkevin
      @browncoatkevin 7 лет назад +26

      He understands how Percy's unique mechanics work quite well. He's willing to push them to their limit and make Matt tweak the DCs and the nitty-gritty, but Percy solo is not a particularly strong combatant as the Battle Royale proved. With exceptionally little self-healing and a disadvantage at melee range, along with no multi-target attacks and chances of misfired guns, he's good at dealing high single-target ranged piercing damage with some debuffing action. In the right circumstances, he can be devastating at melee, but his best showing there was due to his Dragonslaying Longsword paired with Action Surge and an assist from Keyleth's Fairy Fire spell. The other big downside is that such high damage causes Matt to decide the enemies are royally ticked at him, hitting him back and showing why he's the one knocked down in the second opening credits. As part of the group, he's consistently invaluable as a combatant due to Taliesin's quick thinking being unimpeded by Percy's high Intelligence.

    • @creeperave3768
      @creeperave3768 7 лет назад +3

      browncoatkevin I think Percy would be perfect if he just had a shotgun in his arsenal...
      no close range disadvantage and a chance to hit multiple targets at the right angle...
      and instead of attack rolls, make it akin to a lot of the spells his allies cast where the enemy just has to do a DEX save and they still take half damage on a successful save (cause, lets face it, you're not getting out of the way of a shotgun blast without taking a little damage)
      Give it a really small cone (maybe 10') where the targets have disadvantage on their saves and then a slightly larger area (probably an extra 10' to the cone) where the targets have advantage on their saves.
      And then give it a fairly sizable reload time. So, maybe, 2 shots and then it takes a whole action to reload. So it wouldn't be fire, reload, fire (like he does with Bad News) but more, fire, fire, pull out another gun, fire and spend a turn reloading if he feels it's important enough...

    • @cryofpaine
      @cryofpaine 7 лет назад +4

      I would love to see a bunch of one shots before the next campaign where they do different systems and different settings. V:tM, Travelers, etc. I'm kind of disappointed that they're going to go back to D&D, just because of all the genres, fantasy is my least favorite, and I'd love to see this group in a different setting.

    • @blenfor
      @blenfor 7 лет назад +2

      cryofpaine I'm not a D&D player or GM. I just played once (a small 4E campaign) and that's it. D&D never was part of my history as a gamer. I started instead in 2000 here in my country, Chile, with WoD, VtM and Werewolf The Apocalypse, and now I run Savage Worlds games. But CR ignited my interest in D&D, and because of my personal experience with rpg I woud like to watch them play other games, specially the ones I played as a Player or GM. I think it would be a great breath of fresh air before their new D&D campaign.

    • @Incurafy
      @Incurafy 7 лет назад +8

      It's already been mentioned that they're going to have some one-shots and short adventures in between campaigns to give Matt some time to recharge and let him play a few games. Liam looked at Taliesin after his last game and said, "I'm done, you're up" or something like that. Taliesin more or less says he has a V:tM game he's working on for the cast, and Marisha wants to run another one that I forget the name of.

    in regards to the old stigma with roleplaying being associated with socially inept people. I run a campaign in a pub every week, with in my opinion, some of the sexiest, coolest and most sociable people I know.
    we have a good time, we dont get much hate, we sometimes get people asking about it and on the odd occasion we even get a few random spectators who (sometimes a little too much) get just as invested as the players.
    roleplaying isnt cool, it isnt uncool either. its just some friends having fun together and being able to play pretend like they used to when they were kids, back when life was easy. people see that happening and nowdays tend to respect it, if not envy it.

    there are two narratives running at once the real one involving all of us and the one in the imagined world we all share.
    any attempt to describe the experience falls flat without the embrace of the narrative in the real world.
    example: She Kills Monsters www.samuelfrench.com/p/8807/she-kills-monsters
    I had a friend I played with for years who died. we remember him not just as himself but as his character. this game gave him something before he died it made him more. it showed us his hart. he was a brother to us.

      I know, I really want to know how Percy applies to Taliesin's life! Like, does he have someone he wants vengeance on, or is it something where being born to nobility=being a child actor, or what exactly?

      At risk of necro'ing this comment, Percy is the question that Taliesin refers to somewhere around the 2:00 mark: "once you realize you've made a huge mistake in the past, how do you go about living with it or trying to right it?". That's a paraphrase, but I would guess it has something to do with the deal made with the shadow demon and his resultant thirst for vengeance.

    i don't agree, i like characters like superman and spiderman who are always right and i hate their emo sides.
    but its true that having character evolve is a good thing. thats the point, a character cannot be the same all the time. exemple of punisher, people like him but in 40 years he never changed.
    but characters who are jerks... thats just not my cup of tea. people may like jerks but i suspect they do simpoly because its the side of them that wanbts to just outrage and kill everybody for fun and games. because in real life they can't. i'm not that type of person, i like true heroes. those who jump in front of others to save them cause they can. call me old school if you want. im fine with it. but thats how i feel.
    people preffer siths, i like jedis deal with it.

      Character's who actually explore the human condition are fun and I think that's what Taliesin is going for. People can definitely be jerks and that can certainly be more fun exploring than simply having a Demi god walking around saving the world.
      If a story doesn't ask and the question of why the world should be saved, then that story has failed imo.

    • @dndbasement2370
      @dndbasement2370 7 лет назад +2

      my point being that players just ignores those things. why would the world be saved ? thats not even a question on their mind. they simply never askes the question. the problem comes from the player based on modern times. all of them comes from video games. and video games dont ever pose those questions, you are expected to just do it reguardless of what you are playing. thus players in D&D now just do it because whatever, its what expected of us. that leads to players just following and not taking initiatives when it comes to your stry. they just explore like in video games, pick quest as they go and follow the route to experience or golden rewards until there is nothing more to do. MMORPGs have made that burned in their minds.
      now imagine a player playing PTSD in a game. how long do you think it will take for the other players to have enough and tell themselves they shouldn't be adventuring with such a charcater ? Imagine a player fearing dragons and as soon as they see one they run away in fear. how long do you think that player will play before the others say dude, you simply left us in the dirt ? the fact is, modern gaming has changed a lot and role playing has taken a major step back for mechanics. i truly love role playing games and when i do play MMORPGs i do put myself into the charcter, talking for him and all. playing his emotions... but let's be honest... thats my actor side playing me. isn't this what we love of CR ? the fact they are 100% in characters, voice and all ? but look at the DM, he explains the players their emotionnal states and all. the players listen to him and play that. be honest, how many of your games would work like that ? how many times did you tell your players they were afraid of something and they actually played that fear ? to me i can tell you... in all of my games over the years... only like 1% of my players actually played emotions.
      the point he's trying to make here is that its preferable to be a jerk then being a nice guy. and unfortunately that means anti-heroes are much better then heroes. and to me that is simply wrong. i hate anti-heroes... they are evil bad guys that do shit, but because they did one good thing we absolves them. thats stupid to me ! i understand having a character with background, a reason as to why hes like this... but there is a difference between good and evil. thats very far from being only a type on a line below the monster name.

      Whether it's a question in their mind depends on the players obviously. I would definitely recommend players ask such questions in order to push the entertainment value out the very intimate experience a D&D adventure can be.
      I am a "modern player". I come to D&D primarily through games like Dragon Age and in those games you are often forced to take a stand on many questions including why do we try to save the world?

    • @dndbasement2370
      @dndbasement2370 7 лет назад +1

      only if you do care for the story, something which most players do not and only care for themselves.
      the best player i have had up to this point was a girl larping alot every years. shes an RP person. combat comes far behind for her.
      but when given the chance at getting a city under her sway. she dropped the group on the spot and betrayed them !
      she didn't even count or think, she just did it. and thats the problem. people think of themselves all the time. there is no altruism.
      again in your dragon age game, you "think" you are asked the question. but in reality you are not, you are lead to it and then an answer is taken reguardless fo what you will say or do. in the end the story is not your own, it is the one they decided to inflict upon you. in TTRPGs the story is welded into your characters. meaning that it is literally you who decide what to do. if the DM puts a quest on you, you can simply ignore it. while in video games including dragon age, if you dont the quest then the game doesn't go forward until you do. thats the deinition of a true open world. the world lives with or without you. something most games if not all games cannot do otherwise there is no story to the game.
      here we're talking about good and evil. and talisin just said, its better to be evil then good.
      notice how they supposedly play a game of good people... but then proceed into cheating in every mini games they play in, prioritising loot and greed over everything else. and like to torture people for fun and games. and those are only 3 things they like to do in good game. when its all said and done, does one good act really absolves all the bad stuff you did before ?
      so one has to consider, what's good and what's evil ?
      to that i answer... the question isn't even into play, people are neutral or evil. never good. people cannot play good for the love of it. because in reality they are always law abiding citizens and when given the chance of playing will always play the inverse of what they live in. and since this is make belief, there is no sense of feeling bad for what you did. and thus its easy to just imagine you can do whatever you want including murder and say, hey im fine with it so lets get to that bar and just rape that girl. because no consequences. and by that i am saying... that even if their character dies, they will simply make another one. because playing for fun right ?

      _"but in reality you are not, you are lead to it and then an answer is taken reguardless fo what you will say or do."_
      To some extent, yes. There are only so many options that can be programmed into the software, but even so, that does not mean the question isn't asked. There are certainly players who love those questions and, unlike in video games, D&D actually allows exploration of the question influenced immensely by your actions.
      That's something only TTRPGs can do and something I encourage players to explore. That's also seemingly Taliesin's agenda here. It's an experience that, like you said, not many (though definitely some) players really consider, but something I wish they would try out at least once.
