- When Hurricane Helene struck western North Carolina, it knocked out cell phone service in some areas, forcing many residents to depend on the radio for communication and information. For days, WWNC AM radio host Mark Starling and his producer, Tank Spencer, served as a proxy dispatch service, helping to coordinate wellness checks and connect the stranded with nearby resources. Skyler Henry has more.

How awesome this station is. These men went well beyond what was expected and helped those they could and where encouragement to all. A voice on the other end of a disaster.
The same happened in New Orleans after Katrina. If I remember right, different well known broadcasters in the area from different stations essentially became the areas communication system on one station.

My brother listened in on the 50,000 watts powerhouse station WWL 870 AM in New Orleans for limited portions of airtime, they had to convert into a 24 hour emergency information relay source, they couldn't do any regular programming for at least a few days or more until the flood waters began to subside and at least a little sense of normal activity could return once again, but for a few days there, WWL Radio sounded as if the announcing staff were holed up and trapped inside their makeshift broadcasting location, trying however best they could to help anybody locked inside their home listening in to the station to get through their struggles with the flooding for as many days as it was needed.
Still so, so many without power and water in rural WNC. Please don't forget about us😢 It's starting to feel like the world is already moving on from what happened here, but we still have nothing but shattered pieces😢

They eventually tied most of the radio stations together in that area on iheart radio. I was listening to him and others on it because it was the best source of information of what was actually going on. I pulled up google maps since I wasn't from the area and just listened. Some of these people were on for some insane stretches, and often knew little of their own families situations. Eventually the local authorities figured out it was the best way to get the word out to the community so you got a ton of great information you weren't getting from anywhere else. Props to these guys and everyone involved.

I live in Honolulu, Hawaii. My go to radio station for emergencies, like hurricanes, is KSSK 92.3FM.

I have a Motorola emergency weather radio. It has solar panel. It has the ability to charge your cell phone has a crank on it in a flight. I recommend anybody getting them one in the near future..

Crews in Chimney rock busting up boulders, Hugh mountain rocks, in river, and making a French drain to move the river back across, bc it moved!
It is supposed to be on the other side, not here.
The large rocks came down, into the river and shifting the river up on the road.
