- Chopin’s first Nocturne in Opus 9.
Venue: Piano Works.
Chopin was well known for his études and nocturnes. He was a showcase and important composer of the early Romantic period. The ideas of Romanticism sparked after the French revolutions, allowing for more free compositions rather than rational, contrapuntal music. Chopin died at a young ripe age of 39, just after the 1848 revolutions and his home country’s revolution against Russia. The impact of Romanticism on music to pave its way into contemporary and pop music can be seen in Wagner, Beethoven, Berlioz, and Tchaikovsky. Chopin’s Nocturnes come in sets of 3 or 2.
This Nocturne was written in a compound duple time, or in this case, 6/4. The middle section, highly repetitive, and the abnormal 22 against 6 polyrhythms show his fascinating experimentation with his first nocturne; such a mastered first type. His ingenuity is seen in this piece.
