Bro you just said it, your 21 you had this realization at a great time. When you get older there is always SOMETHING you can do in combat sports at any age, but 100% the realistic window does get smaller and smaller.

21 and feeling old is wild 💀. I just turned 26 and feel the same as ever, physically speaking at least, ofc mentally I’ve grown. I started training MMA a year and a half ago at 24 and plan on competing and while I wish I started younger I don’t let it bother me. I’m making my debut at 26, a friend had his at 25, one of my training partners is making his at 29, my coach had his first fight on his 30th birthday. One teammate wants to have his kickboxing debut at 45 etc. Ofc we have people in their teens and early 20s competing too but
I coach the kid and teens classes and trust me, besides the rare exceptions, most of the kids and teens don’t really care for training or take it seriously. Sure the small majority can carry it over into adulthood if they really wanna fight but 90% of them just do it cuz their parents force them to or they might genuinely like it but don’t take it seriously, it’s just a hobby.
Those that start older usually take it more seriously even if they do it just for exercise or recreationally
Do I regret being young playing video games, watching tv and not doing martial arts? Not at all, I was just being a kid and enjoying childhood. I did some sports as a kid…Soccer, McDojo Karate, Skateboarding etc and besides skateboarding, none of those stuck with me even into my teenage years. I did wrestling in high school and after high school I didn’t wrestle again for like 8 years until I got to this mma gym at 24. But actually taking it seriously as an adult, I learned and developed more in this year and a half than my entire time doing sports combined as a kid and teen, so don’t regret the past 🤙

I turned 23 on the day of your upload, it is a million times better to feel old, recognize the urgency to act rather than think you're still a teenage kid which I think a lot of our peers do. I can say from experience that not drinking at all is the best decision you could make. I wish I had your insight at 21 but I'm glad I got there eventually. Keep up the grind and good luck on your journey.

what do you think about job schedules messing with training schedules? Treating training a combat sport as a hobby vs seriously where you will quit your job just to compete

I did wrestling when I was 12 and again at 17 then didn't start training MMA till I was 26, now I'm 27 so you can imagine how I feel lol. But hey as long as you start before you're 30s you can at least reach your full potential depending on what your goals are. Look at Francis Ngannou who started doing MMA at 27. I think the key is to dedicate your life and not to become lazy if you wanna make it far, which tbh is easier said than done sometimes but hey we're not called fighters for no reason.

Got into a real mma gym around 19. Was super dedicated for about 6 years before a (manageable but unfortunate) back injury. I'm 32 now and train light a couple days a week just to not become a pussy 😂

Then it would be good if you did the next best thing. Start working out and training strength (calisthenics and or lifting weight) and cardio (weather sprinting, mid to long distance running, biking, ect). That way you will still have better strength and conditioning than most people and although it may not be as good as training to fight? You’d still have an advantage over most untrained people in the amount of strength and good cardio you have.
