I bought my Synology NAS in 2020. Spent a lot of my lockdown converting all of my DVD's, VHS tapes, CDs, records and photo negatives to digital format and set up Plex. I also store all of my photography by year and trip. It was a lot of work but now they are all in one place. The drives are in Raid and I just added a usb backup drive.
Great video, however I would add. Using a NAS box as your primary means of backup is risky. If the box fails or something kills both drives in the box (like a power surge), you are going to be in a bad place. I have a 2 disk Synology DS720+ and it's a great device and it's so convenient to have all of your media accessible across the network. However, if the box fails I am in deep, deep trouble. I have a 4 TB external SSD to back up the full contents of my NAS and for my most important files, like my photos, I also backup to Google drive. In my opinion, backing up your NAS and using cloud storage is probably the most robust solution to backing up. Great video, and wonderful content.

Having your data on a NAS is no different than having it anywhere else. It's a single point of failure. Most people live their entire lives without even worrying about this. There are infinite solutions for redundancy as well
I do not like either, and have had bad luck, lost lots of files, on both...WD just decided to no longer support their product... thanks a lot WD.... now I have to figure out how to get my data from it if possible.

I also trust Synology’s C2 for automatic, nightly backups, where 3TB costs about the same as a pro dropbox account. The difference is dropbox uses up my computer’s hard drive space.

There are alos many other cloud solutions that do not run natively on a NAS. Many people don't realize that a DAS can funtion exactly the same as a NAS but without all the complications. If you are just trying to get more storage space and do not need to network you data, then NAS is NOT the way to go.
Actually for better protection you want a NAS that holds several drives at once and set then up in RAID10 so if one drive fails you don’t lose anything.

I was going to buy a NAS and shortlisted the WD Home cloud. Then they got hacked and discontinued the service! So I looked at another service but apparently, they are cutting back their service from May or June this year so you cant access the NAS over the web. It sounds like these services are not safe or no longer reliable. I therefore put a 1TB internal drive in my PC and wrote a batch file to back up my important files at startup. So I have the original on the PC and a backup on the 1TB SSD drive. Thankfully I only have a few gig to backup. It is not accessible over the net but other services seem to be removing this feature.

Different manufacturers make them in a range of options from a simple multi-drive enclosure through to a RAID array. A NAS is actually it’s own little computer, but instead of running Windows they use their own operating system and you access and communicate with them over your home or business network instead of plugging in your keyboard and mouse directly like a desktop PC.
But how much is one n which is better for u 12 tb or nas because right know i am paying for icloud $9.99 if u can let me know which one is better thanks
I took your advice and bought an 8TB storage device. I mapped the drive in Win10 to Z:. I found the drive on my MacBook. The problem is that none of the files I copied to the storage device directly from a Windows and Mac OS before connecting it to router are visible. Also, the biggie, Windows laptop shows only 196MB space available on NAS while NAS is connected to router via USB. When I connect storage device directly to Windows device via USB it shows 7.12GB available. Storage device is formatted as exFat.
A NAS (Network Addressable Storage Device) must use an ethernet (Cat 5e) cable (not USB) to properly connect to a router and your home network. An external USB hard drive is not a NAS.
Is not better to use commercially available online cloud systems? I am currently using individual hard drives, i had one Hard disk of 2Tb and other similar to back it up on monthly basis. I am planning to move on commercial on-line cloud service. What is the point keeping a cow at home for milk, when we can buy milk from market? What you recommend, using the on-line cloud system rather than the private NAS system?
It doesn't matter if you use a NAS, or a DAS, it still needs to backed up. Sure, RAID reduces the risk when drives fail but what if the enclosure/ box fails? Say goodbye to ALL your files.

does that drive need to be connected 24/7? Can you also disconnect it from the socket if you don't need it temporarily to save energy?
@@Officialmorpheus I leave mine up 24/7. It can be powered down by following the procedure from Synology.
What software/tools did you use to convert DVD's to digital format?
DVDs are already digital. You can use DVDshrink to copy DVDs to .iso file.@@francois-olivierbernardin9019

I would personally not use Seagate drives. They may be cheaper, but have been and still are prone to failure. I would use WD Red instead.
Actually regardless of brand you want to buy Enterprise Drives. I have seen plenty of WDs fail. Their drives are crap anymore.

Power Supply backup UPS. Saves you allot of headaches when your NAS gets a power outages while you write to the disks.

I have 3 macs that backup to my Synology 1821 nas using TimeMachine. Works flawlessly.

you should consider using a DAS combined with an Enterprise level cloud. WD is not known for their security.

You can set a schedule to turn it on and off automatically. Yes, there's a power button for easy on/off. It takes a minute to power up or turn off.

It's not even close. If I subscribe to iCloud for 12Tb, it will cost me $60 a month. NAS all the way.

The NAS alone is not a backup, if your NAS gets corrupted you loose everything so backup on extra external drives

This is why I have a NAS/external hard drive backups AND a cloud backup. It’s best to have both.
What most do is have 2 NAS and then use the larger of them as auto backup storage. Then you don't have that problem.
