    Yes, it's a well designed mobile base. But what's far more significant to me is seeing great parenting. Those kids are clearly being raised in a happy, supportive and loving home. The world needs more parents like this. 👍

    I built one that is almost exactly like this. The "box" around the outside is four pieces, joined with box joints and is very strong. Thanks for the inspiration on this thing, it was easier than I thought it would be, and your attitude really helped me. That bandsaw hasn't moved since my brother helped me lug it in there about 7 years ago. It's so nice to get some much wanted shop space back - I didn't know what I was missing, wow. Now I'm working on one for the table saw and work bench.

    Among the best designs I have seen. Very clean and low profile for having used 2x4 lumber. The whole mechanism is on the inner side of the tool's steel base and has clearance beneath for your feet. Fantastic! I really like it, and especially your talented models who showcased with much enthusiasm!

    Mr. Alcala,
    Of all the DIY mobile base videos I've viewed this seems the most simple yet effective. I like that all the parts are within the perimeter of the base. This will be a big help in my workshop. Thank You Sir for sharing this.

      It would be nice to know the type of wood, have the shape of the latch, and information on some of the hardware. Where did you get the bolt with the eyelets that catches the latch? Lowe's? I can't tell from the videos if the cross pieces that attach to the frame are 2x4 or bigger. The last piece of information that would be helpful would be the angle of the wood the holds the cross 2x4's off of the wheel bases. This is an excellent, yet simple design and I would guess your guitars are equally well built and high quality. Thanks Robert for such a great post!

    • @AlcalaGuitars
      @AlcalaGuitars  9 лет назад +4

      Barry Tipton Hi Barry,
      All the wood used is 2 x 4 pine from Lowes. The latch catch (the bolt) is the non-threaded section of a 1/4 inch diameter by 5 inch long bolt. I cut the head and threaded section off and ended up with a little 3 inch bar. The bar is dropped into a groove that was routed on the 2 x 4. It is held at the ends with 1/4 inch bolts with washers. (this makes it look like a bolt with eyelets). All cuts, except for the groove are cut on the band saw. The cut angles were a bit tricky. There was some trial and error on scrap pieces of wood to get the angles just right. The shape of the latch was cut out of thick card stock paper. I played around with the shape until I figured out how it should work then I cut the real one.
      Hope this helps.

    Cracking, simple idea - I hope you don't mind, I unashamedly copied your design for my Record Power (Yes its an English one, as I'm in the UK!)RSBS 14 (14 inch wheel) bandsaw - slight difference on the latching - just used a standard door bolt and metal plate. But it works perfectly. Thanks for the video!

    Beautiful. Your design is clean and well executed. I love the kids too - makes the video more fun to watch. I've looked at dozens of videos on mobile bases and yours stands out, way out. You have fine craftsmanship and an enjoyable presentation. I have that exact band saw and intend to copy your design. I'm thinking that it can be accomplished without the side rails and I'll attempt that to see what happens. The saw is light enough that I don't think the steel legs will bend, but we shall see.

      Hello E Caff,
      The red guitar in the video is my favorite. I played it for around 15 years while playing with a couple of local bands. I got a lot of compliments on the tone.
      I started making guitars for other people only after I learned how to make them from scratch. Looking back, it took me 5 years to acquire the skill and knowledge to make a neck that would rival any neck from Fender, Gibson, PRS I also made a lot of my own tools and fixtures. I'm always looking for ways to improve. My mantra is to make the next guitar better than the last one I made. Hope this helps.

    Great design. Just bought a Firestorm 10" tablesaw and I have been looking all over for plans and I like yours the best. I will be spending my weekend figuring out your video. Already replayed it 10 times!!! How did you attach the springs you mention in another comment? I look forward to checking out more of your videos.

    • @AlcalaGuitars
      @AlcalaGuitars  9 лет назад +2

      Hello Thomas,
      One end of the spring are inserted in a shallow hole on the hook and the other is inserted in a shallow hole on the lever arm (the 2x4 the kids are pushing down). The holes need to be aligned the that the spring is compressed nice and straight. During assembly, the spring is compressed a little bit as the hook pivot pin (bolt in my case) is inserted. The spring being in compression will keep the hook in the lock position until you press the little handle and unlatch it or when you press it down to lock the wheels down. The spring is captured due to it wanting to extend and the way the hook hits the lever. It's all pretty simple once you catch on.

      @@AlcalaGuitars Thanks for getting back to me, I’ve watched Roberts video but still can’t decide what height I need to fix the cross piece to the legs of the stand. Am I overthinking it. The castors I plan to use are 3” so I’m thinking the hinged timber that the castors fit to needs to be about 2 3/4” from the floor. Thank you.

    How did you determine the wheel size and placement? Also have you made any where the lever is on the outside of the tool? Do you have a drawing and measurements?

    • @AlcalaGuitars
      @AlcalaGuitars  7 лет назад +1

      Hello John,
      The wheels are the cheapest I could find. They came on a furniture dolly I purchased at Harbor Freight for around $8 dollars. The placement of the wheels is as close to the hinge line as possible. The trick to the 10 year olds pushing the lever down with ease is the amount of lever travel vs the amount of lift. If you notice, the amount of lift is very small compared to the distance the lever travels down. The ratio between the travels can be used to estimate the force needed to push down with. For example, the down travel on the lever is 5 inches and the upward travel of the band saw is .25 inch, then 5 / .25 is 20. So now you get the weight of the band saw say 80 pounds... 80 / 20 is 4. So, the kids are pushing down with 4 pounds of force. I regret not making plans for this design. I have had many requests for the plans. I think if you watch the video and think about the "trick" I described above, it should not be impossible to make a good mobile base. Good luck.

  • @NitsuaNayrb

    As others have mentioned, your design is clean and functions smooth. I have a question: on your latching system there is a metal cross piece that allow the hook to latch, where did you purchase the cross piece, or did you modify something to produce the loops/holes on each end that allows for bolting the piece to the frame? Thanks!

    • @robertalcala8977
      @robertalcala8977 9 лет назад +2

      NitsuaNayrb Hi NitsuaNayrb, I'll try to explain how I made the latch catch. I got a 5 or 6 inch long quarter inch bolt. The bolt had about an inch of threads at one end and the rest was not threaded. I cut the threaded portion off and also cut the head off. I was left with a 3 inch rod. The rod is not modified any further. The rod is dropped in a slot that was routed on the 2 x 4. It is held by two bolts that go through the 2 x 4. The two bolts have washers on them. The washers press on the ends of the rod. It makes the rod look like it has eyelets at the ends. The bolt holes are counter bored to a 1/4 inch from the bottom of the slot.I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    I'm curious how you fastened the wood to the saw legs. You can see the 4 bolts on each leg, but how are they fastened on the other end? Are they just wood screws in the end grain or are there nuts?

    • @AlcalaGuitars
      @AlcalaGuitars  2 года назад

      Hello Hooper Snow,
      I used nuts in the back of the cross members. If you look closely, the cross members are compound mitered. I used the existing holes that came with the bandsaw. The back of the cross members are counter bored to eliminate some bolt interference in the back. All the bolts on the cross members are 1/4 inch bolts. Only the hinges are held on with screws. Everything else uses 1/4 inch bolts.

      There are two pieces played on the video. The first is "Has anybody seen my gal" and the other is "la Bikina". I don't who the authors are. Just a couple of songs I picked up along the way.

    what kind of spring did you use in the latch?

    • @AlcalaGuitars
      @AlcalaGuitars  10 лет назад

      Hi Mike,
      The spring is a compression coil spring, 1-3/4' long and about 1/4" diameter. I bought it a Lowes, they come in a bag of four. It is not very strong. I had to use two of them to get enough force to rotate the latch.

      Hello Craig Morey,
      Sorry, I didn't make plans for this mobile base. There is a great video by MyRobertadams "Planer Stand". His video shows a similar mobile base being assembled. The gentleman explains how it is assembled and how it works. Hope this helps.

    do you have a set of plan?

    • @AlcalaGuitars
      @AlcalaGuitars  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Chuck,
      I did not draw up plans for this base. I was tired dragging the band saw across the garage every time I needed to use it. I actually wore down the rubber pads on the feet. I just started looking on you tube and doodling sketches. The corners of the base frame were tricky. They have a compound angle cut. I had to make some test cuts to get it just right. All cuts were made on the band
      saw except the latch bar groove which was made with my little router.

    Have seen these mobile bases and its variations on RUclips video but when you work off of someone else's ideas, common courtesy is to give that person the recognition. Thanks to Mr. Carl Holgren for introducing this great innovation to our woodworking community.

    Thank you so much for showing this. Do you have another machine you would like to build one of these for? Hint Hint..., and video tape the process and then post that very informative video to make the woodworking world an even better place.....and help novice like me to build this wonderful mobile base? Hint Hint, please, please, please..

      Pattie Dooley Hi Pattie, I just built a mobile base for my drill press. I did not video tape it because my camera was not working. The battery is obsolete and hard to find. I have one more tool (Ridgid 6" planer) that needs a base. I might build this as soon as I get a little free time (I have been very busy this year). I have been tempted to disassemble the band saw base and video tape as I put it back together. I'll think about it.

      +AlcalaGuitars I just bought the Ridgid 6.5" planer/jointer today, and I was wondering if you completed the mobile base for yours. Did you learn any new lessons from this setup?

    • @AlcalaGuitars
      @AlcalaGuitars  8 лет назад

      Hello Benjamin,
      I have not started cutting the base yet. I have some sketches but I haven't come up with a design I like. I want to keep the wheels inside the frame. I want it to lift only about an 1/8", This planer is very top heavy and I don't want it tipping over. If it wants to tip over, the pads will touch the ground and stabilize it. The less upward travel, the less force is needed to lift it. The other issue is getting the latch actuator outside the frame. I want it simple so my grand kids can move it.
