    The Ramones drew a lot of inspiration from 40/50s do-wop and 60s surf rock. They had a fresh sound and, with Lou Reed and others, were at the forefront of modern Punk.

    "I Wanna be Sedated" and "Rock-n-roll High School". The Ramones were one the first punk bands in the US... 3 chords, loud, and crazy live shows with 30 2-minute songs. They motivated so many bands with minimasl musical skill to express themselves. They were true legends and trailblazers.

    Ramones was the best live act I ever saw and I saw a lot. Metalica, ACDC, Guns and Roses, Aerosmith, the Clash and and and
    But the Ramones live was allways the best. They made the crowd jump and dance the moment they entered the stage.

    It sounds familiar because the Ramones are really wearing their influences here: Doo Wop, Surf Rock, Beach Boys, Surfin' Bird, and lots of others.
    I think "Sheena" is very reminiscent in particular of "Tutti Frutti", Chuck Berry (I think?)

    Was a big time NYC punker and this was foundational R&B punk, bread and butter punk. Getting influences from the Beach boys, garage rock and the girl groups of the 50's & 60's. We Want the Airwaves, 9 to 5, and too many others to mention.

  • @sumonjamal1653
    @sumonjamal1653 2 года назад +43

    U got it right... The Ramones liked the music of the 50's and 60's rock & pop... stuff like The Beatles, Beach Boys, Buddy Holly... short, simple & memorable songs. When the 70's scene came along, Led Zeppelin w/ their 'extended' songs and complex arrangements were in popular demand... so u had artists like Uriah Heep, Yes, Deep Purple, early Genesis, E.L.P. etc... and The Ramones hated that approach. They wanted a return to those simple, catchy tunes... and since they could not emulate Jimmy Page or John Bonham... they played their instruments w/ only the basic skills and tried to emulate that old sound that they loved... That's how u got short, punchy songs like 'Sheena is a punk rocker'... 'Judy is a punk'... 'Blitzkrieg bop'... etc... But in 1977, the public at large hated that sound in the disco era. However, in the UK and Europe, their sound started a revolution and created the punk rock scene there.

    Lol! I never thought of that. Ramones do sound like The Beach Boys on steroids. Happy sounding punk. It's like Weezer is too for alternative rock. Happy sounding grungy alt rock. Maybe the surf rock style music, melodic doo wop style singing. Just like the Beach Boys. Punk rock, hardcore thrash, and hip hop and other music are music skaters like to skate to. Or surfing on surfboards as well for that matter!
    Punk kind of has old rockabilly roots from the '50s and '60s. Elvis Pressley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, etc. The the garage rock/proto punk roots of the '60s/'70s like MC5, Velvet Underground, The Stooges (Iggy Pop), etc.
    Yall have heard Ramones at sporting events, tv, etc. Brad. Maybe it sounds like "Good Vibration" or "Surfin' USA" from The Beach Boys?

    The Ramones had many influences, including The Beatles, Elvis Presley and The Beach Boys. They took those sounds and sped them up and made the music move faster, hence 2 1/2 or 3 minute songs, with simple lyrics. They were better musicians than many punk bands, got to see them four times over the years, only the drummers changed. Johnny, DeeDee and Joey were always there. Here are a few to try: Rock and Roll High School, Cretin Hop, Pinhead, We're A Happy Family, Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio? and Lobotomy. Go.

    PUNK ROCK in the 1970's and 80's was a movement in Music. Kids were fed up with Music like disco and 10 to 20 minute + songs. They were 2 to 3 minute songs that kids could start a band and play Music and get their aggression out from school, their parents or all the things that kids didn't like, or thought they didn't need, like a job or a career they just wanted to have FUN and be a kid until you needed to settle down. So bands like The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Cramps, The Dead Milkmen, The Stooges, The Damned, The Buzzcocks, The Dead Boys, The New York Dolls Television and so many more. Another great reaction. And yeah Lex, you nailed it about dropping the consonants off at the end of the phrases. One thing you have to keep in mind if you imagine being at one of their shows is that they were definitely loud. They were extremely loud you could feel it punching through your chest in your body on the low-end and on the upper end your ears with ring for three days afterwards. What's up may have a cheerful Vibe but it definitely punched you and your gut in your face at the same time and it did it to a whole bunch of people at once and people just went nuts dancing. Actually open for them once in Chicago and it was incredibly loud and we all loved it.

    The Ramones - 4 great guys; 4 great chords! I love the Ramones - but that old joke is true. The elder statesmen of punk. Unfortunately, the only time I ever saw them live was not a fantastic show. I think it was around 1993 or so in a small club in Philly. Joey ran out on stage and leapt into the air with a ton of energy and landed in a cool pose. He then didn't move another muscle for the entire rest of the show -- which lasted around 35 minutes. Even so - these guys are legends, and I'm glad I got a chance to see them.

    Punk is much more polylithic genre-wise than it has been projected. There are so many different types. One band Metallica idolized were The Misfits, whose tempo changes, styles and lyrics are a more primitive, less technical version of what you hear in Metallica's music. Since The Misfits are renowned for being the original and quintessential "horror punk" band, it's easy to see how Metallica's music and themes are derivative of those found in the music of the Misfits. You could also find that Metallica's style was heavily influenced by the rise of 80's British hardcore punk bands like GBH, Exploited and the UK Subs.

    Brad is correct. Punk influenced grunge and alternative rock.. Many of the early grunge groups were punk influenced, just played slower and heavier distortion like Black Sabbath. Song structure, style and also lack of or very short guitar solos. Back to basics rock music. Punk rock is/was very anti-prog rock .
    Prog rock groups like Rush, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. Long, layered rock music with multiple solos. Punk rock is the opposite of that and rebelled/reacted against prog rock. Punk is faster louder energy outburst music. Straight to the point.

    As a kid, I always thought they were saying Sheila, instead of Sheena. Which my cousin Sheila loved when I sang along because her, my other cousin Barbara and my sister Sheri all introduced me to The Ramones at a very young age. You definitely need lyrics for the Ramones mainly because Joey had a speech impediment. You can thank Dee Dee for all the blocking of anything Ramones because when Joey passed, he took over the estate and he tried to lock it down air-tight. He was pretty successful in the 1 year he had control of it before he too passed away by way of OD. Maybe you two could check out the 1979 Rock n Roll High School film? The Ramones are in it and it features a bunch of their songs.
