So Damn Metal .... yeah.... and Muslims and Buddhists don’t claim America was founded in the name of Mohammad or Buddha....my point is that it’s not “Religion is bad”..... it’s “Bad Religion” witch many evangelicals (extremists) are practicing and pushing on others while ignoring the basic fundamentals their religions are supposedly teaching them.

@@SoDamnMetal Muslims and Buddists are a minority in the US. Just like in Europe. You might be sarcastic and say "wait another 10-20 years". But the USA, just like Europe, are based on Christianity (American politicians swear on the bible, don't they?), so it's only fair to pick the main religion and critisize the bad parts.

Opened up for them in ‘85. I was 16 yrs old. Was the best day of my life. Couldn’t have been nicer guys. The bassist laughed at me bass amp, and offered his bass amp for me to use. As long as we let their drummer use our drummers cymbals. It worked out.

The song is about George Bush Sr stating that 'Jesus was on the side of America' during the Gulf war. So Jesus loves America more than another country, which the rest of the world found amusing, to the American mindset about themselves.

@@crookedsouls lol songfacts. I'll take interviews with them over that. No citation or anything. Just someone's interpretation. Even one guy in the comments saying Vedder may have sang on it to spite Repubs. Graffin responded to something similar on Rock Feed's Wikipedia: fact or fiction. He said Vedder sang on that album because he was a big fan. Pearl Jam wasn't famous yet and Graffin ran into Vedder and asked him if he wanted to sing some backing vocals and a feature for the album. He jumped at the chance since he was a fan. There was nothing more to it than that.

Hybrid Moments and She might be interesting, but in terms of lyrics the only good songs from the misfits are actually Graves' songs (ie descending angel, Saturday nights, and dig up her bones) despite the fact that in terms of music Danzig is way better than Graves.

I went to the annual ''Punk in the park'' festival this year, which was in Orange County California. Bad Religion headlined the event, and it was a great experience. Got to see a bunch of bands I never heard of, and of course the ones I have. I'm newer to punk music. I grew up with samplings of different punk songs, especially in the 90's and early 2000's, but I wasn't like hardcore into the genre. Punk has sort of come in clutch in my life though, I'm hearing so much I can relate to, and getting my eyes opened to the community, and ears open to new songs. Suicidal Tendencies has had the biggest effect on me, and I can say that they are my favorite punk band for sure, followed by Dead Kennedys lol.

Since I’m a long time fan of BR, kind of skipped that song since it turned a lot. But this hits so many layers of American patriotism, which you caught onto well. I’m Canadian, meaning we bask in American culture, yet live a different way. Weird dichotomy. Anyway, the weaponizing of God and virtue as a self-appointed moral police of the world has made the USA extremely hated (not my words, mind you) and to less extremes a petulant king with his fly left open, inviting contempt, snark and eye rolls at the lack of self-awareness.
The puritanical FCC side by side with the world leader in porn. The insistence that the President profess his faith in God. Not here. (Well technically yes they have to swear to the Queen and God but are not obligated by law, stupid colonial shit.)
And yes let’s not hide the fact you brought up yourself, the Church is mighty rich.

Bad Religion is in my top 5 bands of all time. Greg is certainly not anti-christian. He simply advocates thinking for yourself and not subscribing to any sort of dogma, no matter the religion or doctrine. He's a Rhodes scholar, and finding Bad Religion when I was 14 increased my vocabulary more than any books I've read. I used to get pulled over in rural PA for having a Bad Religion sticker on the car. Could never get the cops to actually listen to the words. They saw the logo and thought I was a satanist! These guys should listen to the song "No Direction" It illustrates how people search for direction anywhere they can find it, be it God, or MTV. The song is dated, but still completely relevant (which can be said about most of their music. The new album is pretty good too. Still doing what they do for almost 40 years! This is really cool to watch and your open-mindedness is a true virtue. Amen, more people need to quit letting themselves get so triggered by challenges to practices and ways of thinking that turn up in their communities! Bad Religion is my favorite band and it's awesome to see their message being heard for what it truly is. I am a Christian. Bad Religion has been my favorite band since I heard "You" on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and I own all 17(!!) of their studio albums. Here's what I get out of the band.
They taught me the difference between Religion and The Church. In one of their songs called "Faith In God," they outright say, "It's all right to have faith in God, but when you bend to their rules and their f***ing lies, that's when I start to have pity on you." The band formed as a response to the terrible money-grabbing practices of the TV Evangelicals of the 80's, which is why they have the name. They showed me that there is a difference between the religion and the people who practice it, and it taught me to dig deeper into reasons whenever someone claims to do something in the name of religion.
I did get a different interpretation of this song, however. What I got from "American Jesus" is that they're talking about Capitalism, the US Dollar, and how that ties into our inflated sense of self-worth . That's what I get from the line "In God We Trust, because he's one of us." The American Jesus is The Dollar--which helped build the President's estate. The farmer's barren fields (taking without giving), the force the army wields (to protect the money), the expressions on the faces of the starving millions (who don't have to starve with the money our country has at its disposal)...all of these tie into capitalism and the want of the dollar. And that dollar, and the ties it has to the rest of the world's economy ("I don't NEED to be a global citizen...), is really what makes us the most powerful nation in the world, and that gives us our inflated sense of self-worth ("...cause I'm blessed by nationality").
It's interesting to hear a different Christian's opinion on this song, especially considering its probably in the top 5 best songs they've ever produced, honestly. I love that you guys have given it a chance, because I think confronting this band that forces you to take a look at your own religion and beliefs can really help you understand what you really care about.

      this is typical copium.
"its not religion its just the church"
i couldnt recommend the channel TheraminTrees more, ive learned so much about psychology from that channel.
shunning reason in favour of faith is NEVER good. An ideology that sees Belief based on no evidence and in the presence of conflicting evidence as a virtue is never good.
decades of studying religion, both from a sociological, psychological and neurobiological angle has illustrated the fact that churches are simply the result of a lot of religious people forming the establishment of their faith. any time theres many religious people sharing their religious ideology, a religious hierarchy originates. And once the "church" consolidates, all the negative features of religion can then multiply.
There will always occur "churches" unless religiosity is abandoned as a fallacious thought process

    • @rdevries3852
      @rdevries3852 5 лет назад +1

Agreed. You might even check out a song by NOFX called "Best God In Show", if, as Christians, you're actually interested in songs that are critical of Christianity. Fair warning though, even compared to "American Jesus" that song is very _direct_ and both a lot less poetic and a lot more general about its criticism. I'd agree that "American Jesus" is mostly critical of American evangelism and nationalism, whereas "Best God In Show" is just very bluntly critical of religiosity in general. "The Idiots Are Taking Over" would be another option.
