- Holbein launched their brand new 24 set of granulating watercolors last week (May 2024), and I happened to be in Japan, so I had to get me one of those :-)
Exclusively available in Japan, nowhere else in the world (yet)...!
So lucky and glad that I got the be part of that launch!
So join in my discovering these colors as I swatch them out for the very first time!
I would also like to say thanks you to everyone who has subscribed to my channel! It really means a lot to me.

Thank you for sharing these gorgeous Holbein watercolours🌺🌺🇨🇦
You're welcome - thanks for checking out the video 🙂
@@watercolor.wyloeck I even subscribed! 😃
@@patbannister1 that is so nice of you 🙂
Holbein! Love the colors
Thank you very much for showing us these!
My pleasure 👍
Holbein 😊
Simply put the various pigments in one little half pan and make these yourselves. Test them first of course! But I’ve done this with several mixes I love now and it works beautifully. Like schmincke shire green. So expensive and I use it so much I put that one in a full pan. Perfection.
Great tip! Yes indeed - lots of these colors might already be in your palette, so heaps of inspiration here :-) - Good idea for a follow-up video :-)
Amazing swatch season!!! I'm not sure how Holbein made fugitive pigments Lightfoot but I'll be interested in seeing someone doing lightfasr testing for all the Holbein granulating colors...Anyway great video, thanks for sharing ❤
These new colors are amazing .
They look lovely don't they!
I want these so bad!
I've been told they would become available in the fall in the US (although I have no idea where you live :-)
@@watercolor.wyloeck I am a US resident, so that's great! I'll ask for them for Christmas :)
Love all the new Holbein colors! Can’t wait to try them.
Glad you like them!
I like the way the blue looked when it went into the orange. Good mix
Hehe - yes, happy accidents I guess :-)
Can’t wait it’s released in Canada, will buy the whole set
I am a huge Holbein fan and I hope they will be released here in Italy too. I like Bourke’s Parrot Pink, Flamingo Orange, Pampas Grass Yellow above all❤
They look lovely indeed! Fingers crossed that they'll be releasing them aboard soon!
Holbein! Thank you!
Very very pretty! I need this in my Life! Thank you!!!
You are so welcome! 🙏 Thank you!
Definitely keeping my eye on these for when they get to blick!
Absolutely! At this moment, no shipping or availability abroad is known, so it might be a while...
Helbein announced that they are undergoing tox testing in the US and expect to be in the North American/US market in the fall.
@@demaramorrow1661 thanks a lot for that update!
Subscribing for your Irish accent, lol. Great video though, thankyou for including the pigment details
Haha - well, I'm not Irish at all, I'm Belgian - Hehe... Recently another person asked if I was Scottish :-)
Hope you don't unsubscribe now - haha - thanks!
@@watercolor.wyloeck interesting i was unaware of a Belgian accent! Love your Belgian accent!
@@paintingtheskykingdom9005 hehehe 🙂
Thank you for swatching!
You are very welcome! Thank YOU for watching 🙏
Holbein rocks!
Yes, gradually falling in love with the brand
Wonderful ideas for mixing my own. Thanks!
Yes indeed - lots of these colors might already be in your palette, so heaps of inspiration here :-)
Very nice commentary. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hmmm... I don't like most of these. The last two rows look very nice, but the rest are kind of dissapointing (for me). Thank you for getting these and testing them out, it's really helpful in making purchasing decisions.
Glad I could help out. And thank you for watching. :-)
Holbein 🎨
I love them but i wonder what the practical use cases for these colours are.
I could see myself using some of these in nature paintings and buildings, as I said, I prefer granulating over non-granulating, it always gives a bit more dimension , e.g. the pinks and oranges for mediterrean cityscapes, the purples for sunsets...
Holbein ☺️
Thank you! You've helped me avoid these. Sad to say, I was wanting Holbein's latest, but no. Not right for me. I appreciate your very revealing video and I hope you enjoy the set!
Happy to help! It's true, I still need to find good use for this set, it's a rather 'exotic' set, so not really useful in landscapes I guess...
Thank you for the swatching session! I personally don't trust Holbein's lightfastness rating - they use their own scale so it's hard to even compare to blue wool scale or anything we have in Europe. I just assume all Holbein paints are to be considered not lightfast. Which I accept and happily paint with them :D
Oh, I did not know they use their own rating system... That might explain the Quin. Opera being lightfast in their opinion :-) - Thanks for that!
Tbh, all manufacturers produce colours that are not lightfast, I am sure Far Eastern artists will be just as aware of this as western artists, there is nothing suspect about this, a whole lot of artists around the world make art for reproduction both as fine art and for commercial/graphic purposes too, it blurs the edges of how and why colour is utilised, having things that will last centuries is not a factor for many. Personally I do want my work to at least see the year out though, so anything made with these will not be sitting on my window sill in the sun.
I would never paint with these not lightfast paints. Shame on Holbein for fooling artists saying they are lightfast. Also there is no need for all these mixed pigments making clean color mixing impossible. I want just single, permanent and highly pigmented paints in my palette. Just a marketing ploy. Since Holbein created “opera” with dye it’s been downhill ever since. The name is part of it. Some of these fade FAST! 😱
@@EvaArt-ud6gwari thanks for the feedback :-)

very useful to see an actual paint out of these. i have only seen the holbein instagram images. which seem to show almost impossible depth of colour and colour separation. i would be interested to know... have you seen these images, and - having now had real world use of the paints - if you think that amount of colour separation could be achieved? thanks for producing this.
Hi - I'm so glad you liked it, and found it useful. I have indeed seen Holbein's instagram posts on these colors, and I have to say, the vibrancy of the colors really is spectacular, but the color separation is not at all what I was able to achieve. Perhaps I need to re-do the swatching and give the paints bigger boxes and more water to separate in... A more wet-in-wet swatching might be a good idea...
@@watercolor.wyloeck thanks for your reply, I agree on your points about bigger area, and more water. Also looking again at the Instagram images, in each case holbein appear to have diluted a very large amount of paint in a bowl containing a large amount of water. This may also be a clue as to how they got some way towards their separation results, although it is a very expensive method to test out in the real world. Still not convinced that y159 can be separated so cleanly from a mix containing bk6 and b16 though - as in their hazy moon yellow photo. All v intriguing though.
Can you please list the serial set number ie product code?
Hi! Thanks for the reply... Not sure what you mean exactly, but I just looked at the box and I guess you are referring to this code: WG591 , correct?
Does anyone know when these will be available in the US?
I'm afraid there's no information available at this point on when they will be available abroad. Fingers crossed!
@stacyrobinson3259 they're undergoing tox testing in the US now and hoping to hit shelves sometime in the fall. Holbein made an announcement this week on their socials.
Holbein...not too bad of a job! Thanks for swatching...Are you from Scotland?
Thanks a lot!
No, I’m from Belgium, why do you ask? 😀
Your "R"s have a very Gaelic sound to them to my ear so I suspect the same is for her. It's a bit reminiscint of an early Sean Connery between the Rs and the echo on some of your S's depending on where they fall in your sentence.
@@demaramorrow1661 haha - and just last week someone asked if I had Irish roots - so funny 🙂
It's those Gaelic consonants. 😂
This set is disappointing. I have the harmonia granulating set which is a cheaper student grade brand but they don’t use dyes. And they have wonderful colors. Happy not to be tempted by these
Oh, I just now swatched the Harmonia granulating set as well, and for me that was a hit and miss I'm afraid... Haha :-)
Although I do think that Kusakabe Harmonia is artist grade, not student grade, I might be wrong though? - Thanks for your insights in any case!
@@watercolor.wyloeck true. I don’t disagree with you. The green was garish so I popped a bit of py 3 in there now it goes gorgeous lime. Cranberry punch too. Popped a bit of po73 and pw 6 for shell pink mix. Much better!
I like everything else which don’t you like?
@@watercolor.wyloeck the conch is gorgeous and I’m having fun making so many beautiful bouquets 😄
$115 for student grade?
@@aleidadiaz2261 I may be wrong on that. The point is they are pigments and Holbein is known to be a super high quality professional brand and they use dyes with some of the colors, plus pigments. Shocking.
You’re right it’s still expensive. I forgot I paid that much. For tighter budgets I recommend buying same high quality pigments and pouring them into the same pan to make it yourself. I’ve been doing that and it works fabulously. I can replicate my faves easily and it’s more versatile to have the separate pigments for more varied use.
I like my desert mix more than the schmincke!
And I’ve had to “fix” a few of these for my taste. But it is a fun palette 🎨😄
get the cheap and better looking Paul Rubens.
which has been out for years....
