Thanks!!!
New band name: Rubby Buzz? 😂
That sounds rape-y
Bro, you are featuring my old band!!!! Whoa!!
All guitar tones are PRS guitars into Soldano Hot Rods. I replaced Jim McD in 97.
No way! That's so awesome. When were you with the band?
@@TheArtofGuitar may 97 to December 2001. I
I also jump into gigs with them from time to time, and they are out on a large tour right now with Everclear and Marcy’s Playground. It was an amazing 5 years! Thanks for featuring us! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
That's so cool. I guess they're gonna be here on Oct 6th. I might check them out. I was in a band that opened for Marcy Playground. We had to supply them their gear, it was kinda weird but worth it. ;)
@@TheArtofGuitar go, for sure. The band is still a lot of fun and Bryan Ewald from PRS is playing guitar for their current run.
@@TheArtofGuitardid they at least supply the sex and or 🍬 candy?
Dude! Jimmie's Chicken Shack is one of the most underrated bands ever! "Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope" is an amazing record top to bottom, the riffs are great, the bass is bouncy and funky, and the drums sound massive. I have been showing this album to my friends since 1998 and always wondered why they didn't get bigger. Aside from "High", I would recommend people to listen to "Outhouse", "Another day", "Sitting with the Dog", and "Dropping Anchor".
Another killer song by the Shack is "Dropping Anchor". Awesome lead harmonies.
6:32
Cop: "Are you high?"
Me: "Am I what?"
Cop: "High."
Me: "Hello."
I always felt this album never got the respect it was due. One of my favorite albums to jam along with on drums. The whole record is full of groove.
Reminds me of Helmet. Love it, thanks Mike
I was shown sitting with the dog by a friend who said it was right up my alley and i was in love immediately. I was new to guitar at thw time and immediately learned the whole thing and did my own cover. Didnt expect to see jimmies chicken shack here, but got super excited seeing that thumbnail.
I remember the exact same thing. I only heard the end and felt so lost. It probably took a couple weeks before I heard the song again and was lucky enough to hear it be introduced by the dj.
You surprised me with Jimmie's Chicken Shack. Give a listen to their follow up, Bring Your Own Stereo.
I am glad you like that one! 🤘🏻
I go to see them shortly after they got on the radio. They were awesome. The NIN cover blew me away.
Haha I remember doing the NIN cover. We never did covers. This is crazy for me to watch lol
What NIN cover did they do?
This is one of the most underrated bands and albums of the 90’s, so few people know about it! They were like the Beatles if you lived in Maryland! Whole album is a banger!
Being a jazz nerd, I always assumed their name was a reference to Jimmy Smith’s classic album Back At The Chicken Shack.
I've been obsessed with this song for what feels like 100 years, now. I love that it is getting some proper recognition. The first track off this same album, Dropping Anchor, is another one you should also check out. Great guitar tones/grooves and heavy ass riffs in that song
This song is a BANGER!!! Figured it out in a couple mins & love it. You can play it sloppy and it fits perfectly. The video is great too

I was just about to go to bed, but Mike HAD to upload
For real.
Same lol 3am ? Lol oh well🤷🤷
He always uploads really late. It's crazy.
Ive always loved how HUGE this track sounds. The bass tone is incredible.
I remember catching this on M2 back in the day. The song had me hooked immediately, and the video was a little 'what am I watching'. Its been on my playlist ever since. I really thought they were going to be much bigger, but never saw much else from them (it was my teen years so watching tv wasn't much of a priority).
Loving these new DEAL videos, I started playing about a year ago just for fun and one of my biggest problems is knowing what to try learning next. The moment I heard that riff I had to grab my guitar and kinda got it just from watching you play! Cheers 🍻
The first time hearing this song is when the singer/guitarist was on the Jerry Springer show in the mid nineties. Good Song!!
That era just has some obscure songs that just take you to a specific point in time. Similar to when I hear "Camel Walk" by Southern Culture on the Skids or "Banditos" by the Refreshments.
hometown guys, great band!!! opened for them many times, were always chill
Jimmies chicken shack is such an underrated band but they are so good
Dude, thanks for spotlighting these guys! I saw them live at the small "block 5" fest in Rockford Illinois in support of this album. Unreal live band!!!
I never knew the name of this band. I knew the riff. Awesome.
Love this tune! I'm so glad you introduced me to it through your livestreams 🙂
I’ve seen JCH live twice and they put on a KILLER show!
Dude that's so cool that you did Jimmie's chicken shack like i stumbled upon them about 2 years ago from a penguinz0 video where they go through an astronouts storage unit. They found a Jimmie's chicken shack poster in there and I got curious so i wemt and listened to high and it just sucked me in instantly. Pushing the salmonella envelope is a masterpiece that I can't believe didn't hit mainstream.
Yeah! There is some great sounds with this band. Very cool!
Never really got into this group, but I don't dislike them. Great job breaking down the parts. Wish vids like existed online when I was a young'n playing my starter pack squire strat.
Never heard the song, it's awesome
I used to play this song in my first band. Great riff!
Love this whole album, very underrated, and nobody I know has ever even heard of it.
your drum kit sounds awesome!
Bro, I haven't heard Jimmy's Chicken Shack in forever. Well done on this and for displaying an awesome band.
Finally someone else who likes this song!
Highly underrated band. JCS is so awesome.
I forgot about this band. Brings back some memories.
the production seems pretty clean and solid
I discovered them by accident on Spotify a few years back. Was stoked to say the least
That album art is incredible.
Crossing my fingers that you’ll do one of these on a song by Badlands, Giant or Queensryche.
I seen these guys play live. They are kind of a local band to me. Surprised to see them on here.
I remember them. There’s songs that still play in my head and I have no idea who the band is. I finally googled last cigarette if I’m remember correctly it was Ned’s atomic dustbin? The amount of mixtapes I had with literally no information or sometime the wrong liner would get mixed in. This one s one of those songs you hear it and instantly know it’s from the 90s.
Oh wow. Did not know this album and track. Very Korn-y. Love the following album "Bring your own stereo" . Maximum variety and fantastic tunes on that album. Great series, keep it going.
I love these guys! Band I was in back in '95-'96 used to gig in a lot of the same places as Jimmie's Chicken Shack in the Virginia Beach / Hampton area of Virginia. Really cool guys, lots of fun.
Yay, JCS! I have no idea where it came from, but somehow, i got the CD. It's such a fun, heavy, and musical band. I think the tone comes from a neck pickup, as that's all I see on his guitar, along with a cranked amp little gain.
That Tele sounds killer man.
Intro reminds me of Remedy by Seether and def Helmet influenced.
Ha I love this song! I waited for it to come on the radio with my finger over the record button on my boom box and finally got it on cassette... later upgraded to a Napster download
This album was played so much by me back in the day.
Love this album !! Bought it after reading a review in Guitar a guitar mag. Still listen to it. Actually got to see them in Atlanta at a small club on that tour. I did not know it at the time, but Jim McD had left the band and saw his replacement. They played and sounded great. I thought they would make it big, but sadly, the follow up album didn't come close to Salmonella Envelope.
I live not far from them in Maryland. They were always a fun band to see locally. This is their home video called "Plucked" from around 1995ish? Unfortunately it's in 4 parts. "High" is about 7 minutes into Part 1. "Another Day" is their best song in my opinion.

My band plays this song. :) Such a fun song to play!
Bro have you ever listened to Jay Reatard? He's more punk and lo fi but very talented musician and producer. He would record everything himself and produce his own records, super talented at song writing and if he would be a live still he would be the greatest engineer/profucer around. Check out his stuff hes done everything from punk to metal to power pop to synth
I liked jimmies chicken shack but I really fell in love with their second album. They changed their sound a bunch with less grungy and more pop. I don't know why they didn't get huge
I first heard Jimmies Chicken Shack at the Orbit Room in Grand Rapids opening for Limp Bizkit the week before LB premiered on MTV. The Shack was the better band.
Underrated album, underrated band.
Of all the other 90's hard rock bands you mention they sound like, I'm surprised you didn't say Primus once. Something about a big up-front bass, tight punchy drums, unusual effects choices, and a song that's mostly a bunch of different variations of the same riff brings them to my mind.
Primus sucks
Either that riff is reminding me of something else that I can't think of, or I'm having some sort of delayed memory thing and it's actually reminding of this song. I don't know, it's too early, the caffeine hasn't made its way yet...
New fave vids, I love these. I get picked on for liking Jimmies but I don't care, they friggin GROOVE.
Another kickass lost band from the 90’s is Drain STH, they were like a chick Alice In Chains that were actually really good. Check out “I don’t mind” if you’ve never heard them. Super kick ass
I like their sound and energy, will check them out, thanks 🤘🏻
6:56 Horns in there! Sounds like Hammett yes!
Haven't heard this in forever!!
I saw these guys back in 1997 or early 1998 at the Orbit Room in Grand Rapids with an up and coming band called Limp Bizkit and all it cost to get in was a canned food donation. I also worked at a small bar/restaurant in Kalamazoo running sound and hosting open mic years later and JCS played there. I heard about it after the fact, but they were probably the most well known band to have played there (that I know of). I’m curious about the turnout because, if the bands didn’t have a good following or didn’t do some decent promotion, they wouldn’t get paid much at all. It’s really awkward when the guy running sound gets paid more than the whole band and the band is wondering when “all the people are going to show up”.
I want one of those guitars. I have a tele, Love it, but I wanna middle pickup too.
Appreciate you covering this forgotten song. It definitely rocks and is worthy of a deep dive for what it does well. I don’t think the rest of the album was as strong, which is probably why it struggled more than the terrible name. I mean they couldn’t have done worse and called themselves “el oso guapo” right?
Jimmie’s Chicken Shack is always a fantastic band live too!
I blarred this album for all of 1995. 😅 thanks for the reminder Mike. 👍
Jimmie's Chicken Shack!!! Dropping Achor is the GOAT.
"Plus I'm all geeked out on ice..." - the art of guitar guy or something
I definitely judged this band on their name, I did hear this one on the radio and paid no attention to it. Listening all these years later it hits a lot harder.
I bought this CD having never heard of the band, solely because the cover had "Kurt" on it. Not the worst album I ever bought.
The artwork Looks a little bit like Kurt Cobain 😅😁
Yeah 🙃
My thoughts exactly!
That is for sure a prs guitar. Cant tell what model for sure though.
Hey Mike, you should check out this band called Sunna. The song is called Power struggle. I think this one would be to your liking as well.
Shit.. I never noticed that 23 on the album cover! They're everywhere man! THEYRE EVERYWHERE!!!!!! 😳😳😳
They're from my home state!
Haha oh my god I knew these dudes. I've never heard anyone mention them outside of Maryland.
Hey Mike, have you ever thought about the Gilmore mod for your Tele. A switch so you can get the Neck/Bridge together like a normal Tele.
nice - looks fun to play
I remember hearing the song High on the radio and I ran out the next day and bought the album the next day. Honestly, I thought the rest of the album was only average, not great but not bad.
It sounds oppressive man
Never heard of this band so I thought it may be related to the British blues band called Chicken Shack formed in the early 1960's and later known a Stan Webb's chicken shack. The origional keyboard player was Christine Perfect who left to marry bassist John McVie and join his band. Turned out to be the right move, or so Rumours has it.
Clever! I appreciate the spread of knowledge; Heroes Are Hard to Find…
I stopped because I saw my freakin’ guitar in the hands of someone else 😅
I love my Nashville Deluxe; it’s so dang versatile!
2:23 Google image search shows one of the guys using a guitar with one humbucker neck pickup, dunno what make it is.
Ride the night by deliverance
You might be able to get closer to that tone with an American strat / neck pickup. Thats a chimey tone that I used to use.
Love this band! You should check out Hole by Jimmie’s Chicken Shack. There’s a really sick breakdown towards the end with a super sick bass line to finish up the breakdown!
NEVER heard of them!
Lots of bands in the 90s with one good song. The Toadies. Meredith Brooks. The Posies. The Wallflowers. Fastball. The Verve.
This was my least favorite and skiable track on the album. They had many good songs
Dude... you said "GeekedOut" ... I haven't heard that phrase in quite some time. Thank you. Truly.
First band that came to mind was Helmet
This series is kinda like Rick Beato's WMTSG series
god damn I love jimmys chicken shack
I think Jared Dines brought this song up on one of his videos a while ago.
Check out “Situation Life” by Sprung Monkey for some incredible 90’s funky, punky rock 🤘😎
Dude you should talk about the band Snot on this! Underrated 90s band that tragically only released a single album. The song Stoopid was pretty much their only hit but they toured with Korn and Sevendust and all those big Numetal bands of the time
yes
Damnit I dropped my guitar you owe me a new one..
