[20] DIY Wallet Sized Door Shims!

Today we look at how to take a super mica door shim (or clamshell packaging) and take it down to a size that can fit in any wallet!

A toenail clipper gives a nice rounded corner that you don't need to go back and clean up as much.

Before attempting to open a locked door by shimming the latch, pull/push the knob or handle in the direction opposite the direction the door opens.Not only will this relieve pressure on the latch itself, but if the deadlocking pin is engaged(Which if pushed in will prevent the latch from being worked in)it to fall in the strike plate hole(And you should hear an audible “click” when it happens)disabling it and allowing the latch to be shimmed.

At $1 a pop NYC metrocards are cheap, durable, and can do the trick as well. Besides, one would look inconspicuous in your wallet too :)

I have a Sparrows metal shim. But I don't carry it all the time because it sets off metal detectors and is an obvious shimming tool. I'm going to have to make one of these next time I have a good sized piece of that horrific clamshell plastic to deal with. Thanks for the idea!

Great video. I have the Sparrows shims and if you own them you know there are PLENTY of them in there. Quick question:. My sparrows shims came with 2 different thicknesses. Did you use the thicker or thinner of the 2 when you made yours?

What's the best thickness of a card for shimming a door? Most credit cards are 30 mil thick. Are gift cards that thick?
