@@kevind3974 Wtf??? - An attack on Guam? Kurita was heading towards the landings at Leyte, not Guam! If they had tried to go for Guam, every ship in the Japanese force would have been sunk.

Johnny Fry same reason they put him in it, he will sell tickets like Harry styles for Dunkirk, brings in a whole demographic that would otherwise not be interested in a historical/ war genre movie..
My great uncle was at Midway (In USMC), he was also in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor happened. He is still alive and in his mid 90s, when he went to the 70th anniversary of the Battle there were only three people alive at that time that had been at the Battle of Midway.
By June 1944, at the battle of the Philippine Sea, the IJN had 450 planes on nine carriers: Taiho, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Junyo, Hiyo, and the light carriers Ryuho, Chitose, Chiyoda and Zuiho. Facing Ozawa, Mitscher had Task Force 58 with 15 carriers. Task Group 58.1 = Hornet, Yorktown, Belleau Wood and Bataan. Task Group 58.2 = Bunker Hill, Wasp, Cabot and Monterey. Task Group 58.3 = Enterprise, Lexington, San Jacinto and Princeton. Task Group 58.4 = Essex, Langley and Cowpens. The difference between 1942 and 1944 was amazing. While US shipbuilding helped win the war, Japanese shipbuilders were pretty good too. But after the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Japan had very few naval planes or pilots.
It looked good until I found out Roland Emmerich is directing...here’s a list of his disasters: Godzilla 1998 (16% on Rotten Tomatoes) The Day After Tomorrow (48%) 2012 (39%)
It was not enough that they ruined the Pearl Harbour story with that monstrosity back in 2001, now they go after the Midway battle with another cheap CGI-full of overdone explosions, fake physics-flying manoeuvres Bayhem style movie. Do yourself a favour and watch the originals: TORA TORA TORA (1970) and Midway (1976).
They should have gone for a Pacific War version of the movie Dunkirk with real vintage planes and a Hans Zimmer soundtrack cranking up the tension. Don't try to depict the first six months of the war. Pick a couple of individuals and tell their personal stories during the Battle of Midway while using a couple of guys as exposition devices to tell us the overall situation.
Can you really expect quality from a generation that gets their facts from “Drunk History”? It’s pathetic, but Hollywood rarely cares about doing a heroic generation of warriors justice. They’d rather CGI the shit out of it and pepper some B or C list actors groping each other. They need to do more movies like Dunkirk, that movie about Louis Zamperini and even Hacksaw Ridge was good. Hollywood keeps trying to do these big blanket movies instead of covering a few extraordinary men and women who did some heroic things.
Trav B This same crop of film makers gave us Band of Brothers and The Pacific, so we *know* they're capable of giving us what we want, they'd just rather try to sell us this fake CGI crap
TheParchisi I liked Dunkirk’s cinematics but absolutely HATED the manufactured sub story plot line... the glorification of a group of deserters. With literally thousands of stories of untold bravery and fidelity to duty the movie instead focuses on deserters running away......how inspiring.....how Hollywood, and how totally unimportant to the actual true story. The air combat and the boat rescues were exiting and good....the rest was awful.
I would like to think that this is a faithful remake of the 1976 original but that might be a tall order especially considering the original was pretty accurate as to how the events unfolded
exactly, your one of the few who thinks that too. I know Lyden is in this new movie...what about Joeseph Rochefort? he was absolutely key in solving the Japanese code.
You know this will be nothing like the 1976 version. So many things were inaccurate in the trailer already. Leftist Hollywood will screw this up for sure.
@@alexanderhamilton8585 Nope, Midway did. Prior to the Battle of Midway, the Japanese were on the offensive on ALL fronts of the Pacific theater. After their losses at Midway they were put on a defensive footing and made no expansions for the rest of the war. If not for the victory at Midway, Guadalcanal never would have been fought.
The film doesn't have to be an A+. It's about showing homage to the people before us who sacrificed it all to ensure our American freedoms live on for all generations to come. I'm humbled by a fellow citizen's call to honor. I respect it and I am grateful for it. Bless them and America.
Ehhh. I think I'll just stick with the 1976 version with Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Charlton Heston, Hal Holbrook, James Coburn, etc etc. For those unfamiliar with it, the '76 production used archived combat footage in parts of the movie.
A Koehler Do you like “Where’s Waldo?” 😂 Around the :30 mark there’s a bomber shooting down the middle of a street. In the background you see a tan car with the passenger door open and a guy hiding behind it (Patrick Wilson telling us all to “get down”). To the left of the car while everyone else is down, me (all white) and another guy (all blue w/white cap) are running and carrying a wounded soldier on a gurney. I only know it’s me b/c I remember filming that scene. We had to run for 30 seconds carrying a real dude for like 17 takes in painful military shoes. Plus it was so hot that day! The blue dude threw up between takes even!
I wish a bigger studio would have gotten in on this and made this with better special effects. The Battle of Midway was THE turning point in the Pacific, the Japanese never went on offense again and for the next three years they were beaten back to the home islands. When they lost their carriers and with them their trained pilots at Midway, it was the beginning of the end. What Yamamoto said was that he could only guarantee six months of victory following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Midway was almost exactly six months to the day from Pearl Harbor. Shame this battle can't be told better, it deserves to be.
Hopefully they name the heroes involved like McClusky, Thach, Leslie, Lindsey, and Gay. The men in the doomed torpedo squadrons. The totally overmatched fighter pilots on Midway that got slaughtered. They should definitely showcase Dick Best. That man was practically the margin of victory at Midway all by himself.
Nah that would be an educational movie. This is just a reshoot of pearl harbour which BTW was the greatest military disaster... for the Imperial Japanese Navy and Japan as a whole.

JK) but seriously, I'd probably watch it on a streaming service but I wouldn't plunk down hard earned cash at a theater. Hell, the more trailers I see... there seems to be very few movies being made actually worth going to a theater to see.
Last I checked there are NO flyable TBD torpedo bombers in existence, about two Japanese Zeroes, and about 6 SBD Dauntless dive bombers. Any that do exist are probably worth over a million each. For all the griping about using CGI, what else did you expect??? And the fact that they included characters like Bruno Gaido and especially Lt Richard Best has me excited to see it.
Sit4Skit Nope, they’re not. This film looks like it’ll be an inaccurate mess. Just look at the Zeros strafing civilians on the street to see how much the filmmakers care about historical accuracy.
Eodyn Japanese fighters strafing civilians in the streets, over-dramatic dogfighting in the hills of Hawaii, fighters strafing a random destroyer at point blank range (which almost certainly didn’t happen at Coral Sea or Midway), the formation of the Japanese ships (they’re much too close to each other and not evading), the bombs hitting Battleship Row in convenient sync for the camera, the “Washington is wrong” thing... Hell, I could even nitpick the “when our freedom was under attack” nonsense. I know that it’s marketing built to play off patriotism, but it’s still nonsense. The United States was one of very few countries in WW2 that was quite safe from invasion. Even Hawaii was safe. Japan launched its attack to break a trade embargo and gain some valuable territory while Britain was distracted in Africa and Europe, not to conquer America. In practice, the US was spurred on to liberate various countries and territories from Japanese occupation, save China from a horrific war against Japan and protect Australia/New Zealand. American “freedom” was never in peril, although ironically, most of Europe and Asia’s freedom most certainly was.

They (Imperial Japanese Navy) never recovered after Midway.....it was their Stalingrad.
They were supposed to win Midway, which would have sucked for the US war effort in the Pacific.

They should have gone for a Pacific War version of the movie Dunkirk with real vintage
planes and a Hans Zimmer soundtrack cranking up the tension. Don't try to depict the first six
months of the war.
