Being an older gamer (I started with an atari when I was 5 back in the 80s), I got to watch the evolution of the game boy but never had the money for one until I was about 17 with my first job at Dairy Queen. I bought my first console and game with my own disposable income. A black game boy pocket and some new game everyone was going crazy for at the time called Pokemon and there was two versions of the game called Red and Blue. I got the red one that day. I still have it to this day, as well as a copy of blue. I had to replace the game boy, the old one got lost over time and after many moves, but I stuck with a black pocket model for nostalgia reasons when I did. I have recently been recollecting physical hardware/game cartridges for my old NES, SNES, and SEGA GENESIS and N64 (and PS1, 2 and 3) game collections I had when I was a little kid. I have no idea what happened to all of those systems over the years, but so far I have been able to get back physical consoles for the NES and SEGA and N64. The SNES is next on the list. My house is starting to look like the AVGN's basement haha. As for the game boys, I only had the black pocket as a kid. So I have added on to that collection just for fun. I also now have a launch model gba, gba sp 101, and a ds lite. I have a flash cart in all of them haha. Modern gaming feels very toxic and controlled and expensive. I kind of dropped out during the PS4 era. They feel more like work than fun now. I can only recommend the games of my era to the younger generations because you can just pop in the cartridge and play, and now you have the luxury of looking up on the internet on how to solve a moment when you get stuck. Plus local multiplayer is better with a friend (or 4) on the couch all together and in the moment as a group. No toxic 10 year olds that only know how to cuss screaming in your ears on a headset haha. Just get a pizza or two, some liters of soda (or adult beverages if you wish. Beeriokart used to be a favorite in my young adult years) and plug in the N64 and fire up Mario Party or Smash Bros or Goldeneye or Mariokart 64 and let the multiplayer action begin!
but for me, the summary is if you are willing to spend at least twice as much on the original hardware, then on a retro emulation handheld, you can get the most authentic nostalgia feeling.
gba sp was my first gaming console as a kid. since then ive been obsessed with gba sp and 3ds. later i bought one in 2016 for around $55 only to discover it was a cheap chinese knockoff of the original. given how rare gameboy is in nepal, its unlikely ill find one here
I feel like the EZ flash takes the fun out of it for me 😭. Don’t get me wrong I love the idea of modding a gameboy. I’m actually waiting on some parts to come in so I can do it but I just love the idea of collecting physical games and switching out the cartridges. It’s nostalgic and satisfying for me 🙏🏽
1:37 Yes, you definitely can. You can actually do it in two ways: the easy way or the hard way. Like you mentioned, the easy way is just getting a GBA flashcart such as an Everdrive or an EZ Flash Omega. Just pop in your ROM hack in the SD card and play it on your GBA. The hard way is getting a GBxCart flasher and an insideGadgets flashable cart. This will allow you to basically write your ROM hack on an empty GBA cart and play it as if it's a legit GBA game. The difference between the two lie on power consumption. Regular flashcarts generally consume more power than a single game custom cart.
I still got a gba sp and bought a EZ Flash cart for it. I also got a GB Everdrive for gameboy and gameboy color games but the battery died recently. Too scared to replace it lol
😂 dont get a gameboy. The games r super overpriced. Just get an emulator on ur phone. Og tech sucks. I promise u that u will hate ur gameboy and it will be a dust collector 🤭
og tech does not suck and it more often than not has a much higher build quality and shelf life. Just find a dsi to mod for $50 and you have all the old gen Pokémon besides the 3ds ones
@@ThatGuy-vk2fe bro my 120$ phone can emulate nds dsi 3ds ps1 ps2 xbox gamecube and everything older while beefing up the graphics and i can still respond to txts in the background....while i stream it all 😂 but go get ur ds or whatever 🤭
Touch controls feel like shit and if you have a social life then your game will be constantly interrupted by calls and texts. Get an Anbernic handheld for $100 and play every console up to PS2/gamecube.
@@BabaBooey195 I have a few games on my phone too, but I have to use a bluetooth controller of some sort because the touchscreen control experience is absolute garbage. I understand the convenience, but there is something about using the original tech that just feels right to an enthusiast. It is the "proper" experience since it was how it was originally played in the first place. I recently bought an NES just so I could have the feeling of putting the game in and closing the lid and hitting the power button again. You will get it when you will be doing the same when the future kids are playing games on their eyeball screens while you are playing on your old phone because you prefer the feel of it haha.

Love it man. Exactly nothing beats that feeling of playing those classic Nintendo systems

I got my original SP 001, the 101 model I purchased a while ago and a chinese emulation handheld that I love and with I play the most, the RG35XXSP

Thanks for mentioning this. Didn’t realize you can write to your own carts

It’s easy to do yourself but if you’re too scared take it to your local game shop and they’ll do it for like ten bucks tops
they're so expensive, my miyoo mini plus does the job just fine
ayeeee I need to snag one

@@God_Shen nope. Use a switch controller and calls dont interrupt nothing. No sense in buying a crappy handheld in 2024. My phone does it fine.
