- Ukraine's military chief says his forces now control around a thousand square kilometres of Russian territory - while in his first official comments on the incursion - President Zelenskyy declared he was drawing up a "humanitarian plan" for the area.

Earlier Vladimir Putin vowed he would "kick the enemy out" - after the head of his Kursk region told him that Ukraine currently held some 28 villages, while the governor in neighbouring Belgorod described it as "an alarming morning".

Actually its not ukraine that aggresively entered russian territory but its NATO led by US and UK. Ukraine doesnt have such capability to attack russia's territory without the help of NATO. But its a grave mistake by NATO to attack russia as it will escalate the situation in the region

It's actually more in favour of Russia.
But due to Ukrainian air defence systems, Russia is forced to use their aircraft as basically a skylift in order to launch long range cruise and (claimed but probably not) hypersonic missiles or glide bombs into Ukrainian territory because they have to stay out of range of air defence.
Russian helicopters are increasingly looking like a deathtrap now Ukraine has more longer range suicide drones.
The long awaited arrival of F16s, along with a compliment of US AMRAAMs could well give Russia a much bigger headache, especially as the French are freeing up some more SCALP (aka Storm Shadow) low visibility missiles.
Russia still has quantity of equipment overwhelmingly on its side (despite media claims), but I'd expect to see an increased rate of Russian things "go boom" in the near future.

Historically there isn’t a hard cultural border between Ukrainian Sumy & Russian Kursk. The original Ukrainian SSR was founded in the territory invaded by Ukraine last week. For example Nikita Khrushchev was born in a village between the two cities and started his working life with his father in Donbas. It’s only in the minds of nationalists that this is a hard territorial line.

Ukraine should occupy Russian territory, so after a ceasefire, Ukraine has something to exchange with Russia. India did the same with Pakistan in the 1965 war. When Pakistan was gaining ground in Kashmir, India opened a front in Rajasthan and got close to Lahore.
In war, position matters, and it matters a lot. Being at the top of a mountain is not the same as being at the bottom. If Ukraine has to reclaim its land from Russia, where the Russians have already fortified positions, Ukraine will face heavy casualties. Similarly, every inch of land that Russia takes from Ukraine, if well fortified, will result in significant Russian casualties. However, even though Russia may suffer heavy losses, it is still gaining land. If Ukraine occupies Russian land that was not fortified and builds defenses similar to other parts of Ukraine, then Russia will face huge casualties. Even if Russia wins that land, it will not lose Ukrainian territory. Most importantly, when it comes to a ceasefire, Ukraine can exchange this land for its own, otherwise, Ukraine risks losing its land permanently."
