Years ago I went to Scotland and it turned out to be one of the best experiences I've ever had. We were lucky with the weather and with all the people we met along the way. I specially remember the day we went to Stirling. At the end of the day we dropped in a pub and the locals gave us a very warm welcome and created a friendly ambience so we stayed for a long while drinking and chatting with them. Needless to say that we spaniards with our BBC english barely understood what they said. I even asked if they spoke Gaelic ! Fortunately a kind man patiently "translated" for us what the attendees were telling and we all had a very funny and interesting evening. I strongly recommend to visit Scotland, moreover it is a very nice country. Best regards for all the scots out there.
Scots is a language and recognised as such on the Scottish census. Yes many scots speak english , over a million and a half speak scots. They are distinct languages with a common ancestor , in much the same way nordic languages have a common ancestor in old Norse and therefore have mutual intelligibility.
I enjoyed the lesson. The most difficult aspect of learning Scottish pronunciation from Spanish is the vowel sounds and diphthongs. As for the consonants, they even roll their R's.
I absolutely adore this. Your presentation makes it so easy to understand. I love your setup and the way that you describe how other dialects enunciate things. This is so awesome.
i love how this sounds like an entire different language, and avoids me from doing my homework, while following my passion of hearing "ish" 30 times in a minute. also gloria from pokemon is why i'm here.
i like the vid, however i wanted to interject that the scots tap their r's more than roll them. the ch sound could use a little work, but otherwise i like how informative the vid is
Brilliant of you, Jade! Accents and dialects enrich languages, making our world way richer, more nuanced, varied and colourful. Standard languages(dialects) and accents are equally important as well.
one of the biggest challenges of my life was understanding a tour guide's Scots accent, which came through lousy tinkling speakerphones on a very noisy bus. second only to an underwater sword fight with a shark. nah, of course I've made that one up
I loved the scots lesson. It's a bonny 'un. yer a canny lassie. I can understand scot noo. thank you besom! PS: I didn't mean to insult anybody, I'm sorry if I did.
Some day i meet someone from scotlandia and tell about my city makassar, indonesia and i said in deep of my heart.. what?? I couldn't understand what the said.. i said could you speak in english please and they said sorry, i'm scotish.. Now i understand why i couldn't understand what they said.. even people from england couldn't understand
Well, why I'm watching this even though I'm quite intense IELTS(Academic English Exam) learner? Perhaps I should use these words to show my abundant lexical resource to examiner !
Omg I've just loved it!!! I love scots dialect, and you've pronounced it so rrright ( haha how to deescribe that r?). I dream about going to Aberdeen!! I vote for more lessons on Scots!!!!!😍
Hello ma'am, your videos are awesome, I have recently found this channel ,actually all of your network of eng vid.And can you tell what is your accent in other regular videos and other teachers in this network??
Anyone can explain Dutch words in old Scottish dialects (ken-know, ilke-every, etc)? I was reading 17 century manuscripts of sons writing to their fathers while studying in the Netherlands, maybe through such lanes? BTW Sassanach is pronounced with H at the end.
This lesson is just on time, tnx. Not long ago I started to listen to A Scottish Podcast, I'm fascinated with this accent, it's so beautiful imo :) And the intonations are so nice! Btw, you did a great job. I can do the rolled 'r', but the rest of the pronunciation is sooo hard, I don't quite catch up.
Hello From Antalya(Turkey) ..but we cannot understand londonCocney Accent ..ı d love it .. please make much more linking(reduced, catanation) words for nativ understanding ,,pleasee
Jade, you're absolutely amazing! You're fairly well-prepared to do this video by wearing the Scottish hat and dress. I really love your Scottish accent. You're a real deal. Keep it up Jade. 💖👍
Can it be, that Sassenach is a word from the Gaelic and means an english speaker? The most Scottish people are speaking Scottish english ore Scotts (that's another thing like Scottish english), I think they are also told Sassenachs... The ending "-ch" in Scottish english is not pronounced as "-k", as far as I know, it's spoken after "i-" ore "e-" as "-ich" like in Ipswich. And "Loch Lomond" is famos for his false pronounciation fro english people (with "-k")... The rolling-R is not only a special thing in Scottland, it's also usual in many parts of England (the southwest, west and north) Only the middle and the east of England are not rolling the R. In the scottish accent they don't hide the R, they pronounce it.
hi, this was the best video about the scottish accent ive ever seen. i find the accent quite funny. maybe i should learn some scottish to impress my friends
That wash awesome, thank you. One of my best friends growing up was from Scotland. Spent summers at their house until I could speak in that dialect. Love the hair too 😊 I remember poof wasn't a good term to use. I just don't remember what it meant. Lol
Great outfit and nice lesson!! is good to get explain this differences between in the same island. when you are never been there somethimes everything gets mixed
Good video, but some of the meanings given and pronunciations are slightly wrong. For example, in sassenach the ‘ch’ would be pronounces as in Loch, not as in ‘chair’. Haud is pronounced as in ‘god’. A few other but it’s overall a helpful video for non-Scots speakers. Interesting fact, my partner if from Iceland and a lot of the Icelandic words are the same as the Scots with the same meanings, so many of them come from old Norse.
Why am I watching this instead of doing work?
I'm here wondering exactly the same thing, The need to keep learning, I guess🤷🏻♂️
Hahaha
how come this was made 4 years ago, 3.5k likes and no replies???!!!
LMAOO I FEEL CALLED OUT BY THIS COMMENT.

I love the Scottish accent, is the best. I'm spanish talker and your "R" is lovely
Scottish sounds a lot more like a germanic language than English does. Reminds me of Dutch for some words.
Besom is very similar to Bezem in Dutch which has the exact same meaning.
And, Haud Yer (wheest) looks like Houd Je (mond) in Dutch as well.
dat dacht ik ook meteen ;-)
It seems that Scotts can easily learn Dutch.
NOW I understand where the "Canadian" "aboot" (about) comes from!! Scotland!!
I absolutely adore this. Your presentation makes it so easy to understand. I love your setup and the way that you describe how other dialects enunciate things. This is so awesome.
I went 2 times in Scotland!
First time Island of skye and Inverness
Second time Edinburgh
I love Scotland ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this lesson. Looking forward to learn more.
Rather iffy pronunciation of sassenach.
Great lesson! I like to see you again in the positive mood. Cheers!
As a Brazilian (portuguese speaker) ,I understood the meaning of "Och aye"...so I can head to Aberdeen now...
I loved this class!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
thank you i shared it with my scottish friend and she laughed
Generally, when Scots speak, they sound like they are well pished off! 😁
Loved the video and your red hair! 😍
It's more of a tapped /r/ in most words which you said quite well when you said "drinking".
As they say: I'm from Scotland, I roll my R's, but that's not the same as my arse! 😃
i love how this sounds like an entire different language, and avoids me from doing my homework, while following my passion of hearing "ish" 30 times in a minute.

I'm here because I just watched "Outlander" and I love Scotland.
This is so cool. I’m learning Gaelic and England is sasainn. So sassenach for English people is so cool to know why!!
Brilliant of you, Jade! Accents and dialects enrich languages, making our world way richer, more nuanced, varied and colourful. Standard languages(dialects) and accents are equally important as well.

I'm only part Scottish, Irish, and Welsh so I'm trying to build an accent for myself. I have no accent sadly :((
Sounds like how to train your dragon accent. I like it!!
She reminds me of the science officer in mass effect andromeda

You're right, 'sassenach' is a Gaelic word. (There's a Scottish Gaelic course on Duolingo if you're interested 😊)
Sassenach IS from Gaelic, and it means Saxon.
BONNY LESSONS!
Thank you darling I've been in Scotland since 2018 but I'm still struggling with the Scottish accent.
Glad to see your new video
This is soooo cool and fun!!
I hear some of the words come from The Dutch language. Interesting. Sounds even Dutch.

I don't know if this was done in jest. It comes across as quite funny.
You're the best, Jade!
Very well done, even if she could not roll her rrrrr's. It is so hard that when Scots came to America even they stopped it.
Oh, the Pumuckl is still alive. The Pumuckl comes originally from Bavaria-Germany. Maybe he immigrated to Scotland in the 80's-

Well as far as the witch thing, outspoken women are considered witches by many. So I could definitely see that being a term for a cheeky woman.
I need to find a catchy comment because it's the first!
I'll just say that Scotland is cool.
This channel could literally go anywhere at this point lol
i'm scottish and this funny
