I worked at GameStop for like 7 months back in 2016 and they would literally throw out perfectly good cases for DS games. Also, online orders come in and you have to pack and send them out if you have them. Even if you notice the game isn’t going to work, you have no option to send the purchase to another store that has it in-stock. I would never advise anyone to buy pre-owned games from GameStop. They’re the Cheeto-finger friend touching your controller of games retailers.

Hearing 360 and DS games referred to as retro makes me feel so incredibly old lol.
I actually used to work at Gamestop back when the DS was the current handheld, and back then we were told to throw out any cases so that we could put the carts in one of those little glass counter displays. We were carrying PS2, PS3, Xbox, 360, PSP, DS, Gamecube, Wii, and even in-box PC games at the time. So they opted to get rid of DS cases to save space. I'm not sure how long they did this, but it's going to be very difficult to find DS games with a box at Gamestop. There was a certain point when we carried PS2 games that we were told to put the stickers directly on the artwork under the plastic as well. Eventually I was able to convince my GM to let us not destroy the artwork, but I don't know how many other stores did this or for how long. So be careful when trying to buy PS2 games especially. If you're looking to collect, rather than just play, I'd definitely recommend avoiding gamestop though. You can find some good deals if you don't care about the case and just want to play the game on original hardware, but the vast majority of the time you're looking at no box. Or at the very least a bad condition and/or incomplete game.

I'm currently a SL for gamestop. These retro games aren't completed by the warehouse. It's usually individual store who may have it in store. The first disc condition was a huge miss from whatever store was taken by. That's a big no to me, I usually decline those type of conditions on a disc. Second, unfortunately when games are traded in by a guest, they do not have the original case or cover art. People usually throw away the original case And we're left with the cartridge. There's nothing we can do about it. Period. Thirdly, we are required to throw away the insides due to CDC guidelines blah blah blah. Most of these rules are coming from California... figures. Lastly, we aren't much of collectors, gamestop is only good with games. I know they try to get the rights of the vinyl pops, actions figures, statues etc. But they have a long way to go for that.

  • @ObjoGaming
    @ObjoGaming 2 года назад +11

GameStop charges the same when you trade disc-only as when you trade in a complete copy, and their Wii trade values are still really good on a lot of titles. Most stores don't even bother to check if the discs are scratched. Most people I know who do game hunting trade in crap scratched discs but keep the cases for when they get good condition cases, so my guess is that most discs don't even work even if resurfaced.
Honestly, I would return all of these to a local GameStop and stay clear from their used stuff online where you can't check condition. GameStop also was infamous for throwing out DS cases and manuals to save space back in the day, so DS stuff is a complete wash.

I used to work at a GameStop, and I’m not sure how this was different at other GameStops or if I just worked with a manager that required more of her employees than most, but I was required to check the condition of any games that were traded in to my store. We would hold them up to the light to check if they had any scratches, and if they did, if the scratches were see-through, it meant that we were 100% supposed to reject them as a trade-in. The games didn’t have to have their own cases, but the condition of them was always very important.

Swear to God, this happened to me last time I went to GameStop (which was about 4 years ago now). I trade in all my 360 games and a couple retro controllers my brother was given by his wife's brother-in-law because I was getting an Xbox One from OUR brother-in-law the next month for Christmas so I wanted to get a few games in advance. I pick out Dark Souls III and Witcher 3 and I was actually expecting the infamous pre-owned boxes for them because those were what I pulled off the shelf. No... this is not what happened at all. What happened was the clerk actually gave me the Day 1 Edition of DS3 (not the version I pulled off the shelf) CiB with manual and cover jacket and Witcher 3 CiB as well. I did have to go back after getting my Xbox because the Witcher 3 disc kept stopping halfway through installation and wouldn't continue (nbd, got a replacement that works fine). I like thinking about this a lot because, even though it was the last time I stepped into a GameStop and probably will be the last time, it was an awesome feeling to walk away that day with the best customer service.

I managed books and music and video stores most of my life and was a corp buyer for said product and piloted video game product for my company. I understand the margins and lack of returns.
But the kdea that they don't have some pricing structure that takes condition and boxes and manuals into consideration is just bizarre to me. They could sell a complete package for triple the price of just a disc.
Now that all gaming is going Cloud, they are about to lose that revenue stream except for collectors, who usually want the complete package. Since they didn't train their customers to keep the whole package in order to get the best price when selling used games to the store, they didn't better cement their ability to sell these now collectible games at higher prices.

Not necessarily. Online orders first get fulfilled from stores that have the product. They have no choice but to fulfill the order no matter the condition or the case when an order like that comes in. So no, they don't necessarily have a version of that game with its box art and case sadly.

There’s so many better places to buy retro games besides GameStop anymore. I also think the word retro games gets used to loosely anymore. It used to be anything that was 25 years or older was considered retro I’m seeing a lot of people call things retro that’s 10 or 15 years old now.

It's a shame that the dominance of digital distribution has made physical media something of a niche hobby. I mean the money i could've made on my physical games I got when I was a kid.

I got in on a buy 5 get 50% off on Christmas or something and the VERY next day I got 3 games in retail box, one was in a steelbook case in fact (last of us 2- yeah it's not a gold gem but I was SHOCKED to ever find a steelbook...) I guess I was just lucky. Now the next game took over a week and Mario + Rabbids came in a generic switch case and my 5th most anticipated game has yet to arrive (I hope I didn't miss 13 sentinals and throw it away!! I'm pretty sure I double checked everything though). At 50% off I'm fine with whatever (I'd like a disc at LEAST though!!) so I'm good that none of my games came with manuals, as recent as they were I wouldn't be shocked if that's just how they were sold, SO many games nowadays (like 100% of them) don't have manuals anyway. Mr. Pete Door (Dor?) convinced me to try it saying if you get reletively new games you might have better luck. And I did. Dude's a legend.
edit: I actually just got my last out of 5 games today, over 2 weeks after the sale (just checked when Pete Dorr's video was, Dec 20)! 13 Sentinels came in retail box though so I'm good -_-.

There's a second-hand chain store in New Zealand (which I can't name because RUclips will delete my comment), they have almost as much selection of preowned games (if not more) than EB games (GameStop). They're probably just as bad in terms of packaging games and the awful condition they're in. They often don't even test the stuff they trade before selling it. What's worse is that they offer refunds on faulty items, but don't reimburse for return shipping, so it's not even worth returning to get the refund. You just lose your money because they couldn't be bothered doing a couple of minutes testing. I also ordered a 'rare' PS4 controller which was in mint condition, one of the transparent blue ones from the PS4 Pro Limited Edition anniversary console, and they shipped it loose in a bag with no protection, and obviously it arrived broken...

If you want to fault GameStop for anything, it would be not requiring original case, etc. on trades & not offering the same amount on disk only as complete games. Even the resellers flipping the newer Walmart clearance games will keep the cases & just trade the disks on brand new XBox & PS4/5 games.

Its mainly for people that aren’t collectors and just want to play the game. The problem for gamestop is that many of those people have just moved to digitial. Physical game enthusiasts go online or to local retro stores.

    • @James-gj8rn
      @James-gj8rn 2 года назад +2

@@dustinsterling3248 yeah the key word here is "used" so of course they are not going to be in top condition but i would say that i would still want a case with them, i can't have loose games, unless it's GBA where the cases are cheap cardbaord and are therefore not built to last

I think part of the reason is that occasionally GS does have better prices on retro stuff than you will see in smaller retro stores, but at least in my area, they don't stock the retro games in the actual stores, they are online only, and on GS website they don't list the condition or what all is included with the game so its basically a gamble on whether you get something decent or not.

GameStop reminds me of a shop that used to be in Preston UK ( don't know if company is still going) That's entertainment, it was primarily for Used DVDs, Games and CDs never did I get a disc / case in decent condition.

I ordered guardians of the galaxy pre-owned earlier this month and the front and back of the transparent sleeve literally looked like it was sliced up with an X-Acto knife handled by a 9 year old , then taped together with shitty scotch tape. The case itself couldn’t even fully snap close.
When I took it to GameStop, the employee who helped me looked mortified. Said that who ever did this straight up deserved to be smacked.

Wasn’t GameStop the company that had that disk cleaner? Remember back in the day we would give GameStop / Play and Trade 5 bucks and they would clean your disk and actually fix it, they can’t even use a service they use to have to fix their own games??? And they wonder why everyone chooses digital

With Gamestop, I would say probably 7 out of 10 discs are completely unplayable that you buy used, and you rarely get the actual case for the game (They give you a generic Gamestop case)

Hey, man. This was fun, and it's gambling, which is fun, but... you didn't expect anything else, did you? I mean, if you wanted something in particular, I'm sure you would have ordered it, and if you wanted a surprise, you would have ordered that (you did). It was a fun segment, and I hope you do something like this again. If you want to see how places compare, Bullmoose Music out of Maine does something similar. See if they're better than Gamestop at this point. Cheers.

The whole “I don’t like greatest hits” thing is ridicules. Just if someone doesn’t know. For a game to be a “greatest hit” title it needs to sell X million copies. Then they do 1-2 more print runs at “greatest hits” which means that they are actually more rare than regular label.

They're USED GAMEs..dude. What else did you expect ? You can also RETURN them
within 2 weeks ( even if you didnt purchase insurance for them) It's hit and miss buying
used games...but all the games I got from GS works...aside the Crew or a couple of other game...that the developers dosnt support anymore. I have over 150 games for xbox360
most I got from GS. I only had to order games a couple of times...I guess I got lucky.
They were complete with orginal art..Hell, I got Quantum Break with the Alan Wake
in original Box1, ( looks new to me..becuase it's an ADULT GAME. An adult took care of it)
for 99 cent. It works like that too...because they dont keep track of all the hinden gems
I purchase over 40 xbox1 games from GS. They all work. Some I had to clean..but SHIET DUDE...I dirty the disc myself from time to time. FFS
They always treat me nice in GS becuase Im not a nit picking little biotch..expecailly
    if I purchase USED GAMES.
There's a thing call a color PRINTER..if you need to print covers for cases :-P
