The distance one has me scratching my head. I've seen the verb quedar used to express time left. For example the example you provided ¿Cuánto te falta para terminar tu carrera? I've also seen ¿Cuánto tiempo más te queda para terminar tu carrera?. In songs and other content I've explored where a similar context is expressed, it seems faltar and quedar could be used interchangeably. ¿Pensamientos?
1). Something is missing constructed like gustar. No me falta nada. Me falta chocolate 2). Missing an event. Use “faltar a”. Falté a la classe ayer 3). Time left to an event. Cuanto falta (para llegar). Falta una hora para salir del trabajo

Funky verb. I completed Pimsleur Spanish and I don't think they ever mentioned the word at all. Maybe this is why. I also don't ever recall them explaining how gustar worked, though it was, of course, used a lot. Baffling to me until I think I learned about it from you.

En muchos casos sí, diría que la diferencia es bastante sutil así que se usan las dos de forma más o menos intercambiables. Si dices cuánto falta, puede ser porque esperas con ansias la actividad siguiente, y si dices cuánto queda, haces más referencia a la actividad actual. Pero como dije, no es grande la diferencia
No sé cómo arreglar la máquina porque me falta calle. (I heard this expression from a Colombian. I think it means that I lack experience. Las galletas les falta el azúcar.
