    Its important to put the landing gear down when landing...That's why God invented checklists.

    Where is the rest of the video? I want to see them get it off the runway. Did they put it on the trailer or did they lift it a little higher and lower the gear?

    First of all thank you for sharing this and the accident video. It is very easy for people to comment in hindsight on what they would have done or not on the accident and recovery.The accident video is now used as a training video on CRM and the potential errors and reasons that can occur during high stress environments.
    The pilot was performing an approach to an Altiport, which as you may have noticed had a steep approach and is surrounded by high ground. His focus was on the approach path and speed, likewise his passenger was also focused on the same thing, you can see this as he checks the speed on a number of times during the approach.
    The holes in the swiss cheese stated to line up before the start of the approach with the aircraft not been fully configured for landing. Normally the aircraft is set up for landing during the down wind leg with the speed, flaps, gear and prop amongst other things being set, as related items. During this approach you can see the video starts on left base with the speed, prop having already been set but the gear not being deployed as part of the configuration. During the turn the pilot deployed flaps and aircraft recognised the miss configuration and triggered the audio warning.
    The possible reason for this was the pilot was focused on speed and aircraft position.
    Remember this type of accident can happen to anyone, just check out the accident reports....

      Eugene Beirne I dont think he just forgot to deploy the gear. I think he knew he would make a belly landing because of that he had a steep approach and the engine on idle or shout down I cant tell. He tried to provide damage to the engine and just glide the final approach

      In the notes from the original video, they state that they just forgot to put the gear down.

      In the crash video, just after the crash, the pilot mentions his attention focused "on the plane just before them", a typical example of cognitive tunneling.
      Seems he ”just” missed à line from his check-list.

      Yes. However, in summer season Megève is far to be a busy altiport. Megève is a ski resort mostly active in winter.

    Do Not lift by the tail! ... and don't panic. It's very simple actually. This airplane has electrically operated gear, so turn on the master switch, and move the funny looking handle to extend the gear. When the weight comes off, it will lower the gear as if by magic! Then set it back down on the gear.

  • @ScreamingYellowMach
    @ScreamingYellowMach 11 лет назад

    Did the landing gear fail to lower or did the pilot forget to lower the gear upon approach?

    Quand je lit les commentaires, je vois que l'on ne manque pas de super pilotes.
    L'armée de l'air devrait recruter sur RUclips plutôt que de se faire chier à former des pilotes.

    The pilot's making sure no one scratches his plane. If only he was as careful when he was landing it.

    air bags would help. Not wearing noise cancelling headsets and they might have avoided the incident in the first place.

    Note to stupid pilot. When there is an alarm blaring in the cockpit, something is wrong.

    • @GINIantoine
      @GINIantoine 10 лет назад

      no so stupid!... if you dont know you should refrain
      the gear alarm sound only when you reduce below 22inch of manifold pressure... and that is when you are about to land...
      In a IFR approch an alarm sound when you are passing the inner marker... and it is the same alarm!!! and that sound is not an ALARM but a confirmation that you are in the cone of the inner marker = you might continue your IFR approach...
      particularly in the mooney plane... many get confuse between a normal check of marker and a gear up alarm...
      and usually when you pass the inner marker is also the time you reduce the engine power... same sound!!! one is okay the other inn gear up and you are going to be in trouble!...

    • @boahneelassmal
      @boahneelassmal 10 лет назад +2

      Antoine Gini That is all correct. You're missing a few points though:
      1. It's clearly visible, and the pilots should have been aware of this, that there is no ILS system installed at this airport.
      2. The signal when passing Inner is not as long as the gear horn.
      3. the Inner signal doesn't sound till short of touchdown then suddenly changing it's intensity.
      All in all you can say it was rather stupid of the pilots.
      In addition, one usually runs a before landing checklist on ANY plane, Cessna, Boeing, Airbus or Antonov.
      Flaps - set
      (if avail. Spoilers - armed)
      Gear - down.

    • @GINIantoine
      @GINIantoine 10 лет назад

      You are right
      But..
      I had a paro once... With automatic extension of the gear if manifold below 20inches (More or less) and speed below 92...
      Twice it save my plane... As doing the Check list... The controler ask me a silly question witch disturbed my...
      And twice i forget my Check list...and gear down of course!
      With More sophisticated planes... As the malibu: we coule not forget the gear... As it si impossible to have the speed for landing without the gear extended... ( sorry for the english as the corrector is Ugly!)
      But we should always...
      In altiport it is unusual situation and it is hard to hâve the Check list...
      See you soon!
      Antoine

    • @boahneelassmal
      @boahneelassmal 10 лет назад +2

      no matter what, you have to run the checklists and if you forget you probably should think about your competences to fly an aircraft.
      Even if there is an automatic gear extraction you have to check whether it really is down... Maybe the automatic system failed.
      There actually is no excuse to forget / not run a before landing checklist.

    • @GINIantoine
      @GINIantoine 10 лет назад

      In à low wings: how do you do to be sure that the gears are down??
      Twice i had to make à Tower flight by to have à visual on them!.
      Alarm alarm how do you do a difference betwenn alarm or normal sound?... Inner marker/gear up??
      Sure in Megeve: nô ILS... But in Sabadell Spain... = gear up landing in à monney for à friend...
      Hability to fly in nothing with distraction... So when theree is specific action: my passengers should by quiet...
      See you!

    Old tires or an inflatable mattress underneath the tail on the rear of the helicopter dolly, then lift with tractor to clear trailer then rotate trailer under fuselage and lower the aircraft onto the trailer, done.

    Aircraft salvage the french way... starts with using all the wrong equipment you can think of and ends with lifting the plane on its engine suspension, which will induce lot's of structural stress to the firewall... thanks; I've seen enough.

    Leçon de manque de pratique de la Check avant atterro. Je ne parle pas du lâché terrain, qui sans aucun doute à perturbé ces joyeux " Pilotes du dimanche" sans se salir la main ! Leçon également que la " chaise " en pratique des procédures , au sol n'a rien de déshonorant ! Une leçon pour tous. Ami pilote qui vous du bien. Dom.

      Le pilote dit qu'il était ”préoccupé par l’avion devant eux”.
      Un exemple d’effet tunnel responsable de nombreux accidents : en situation d’urgence l’attention se focalise sur un élément secondaire, et ignore le danger prioritaire.
