  • We did not know, what will happen in the next 4 minutes. I was filming the approach for my personal video files, than it happens. The crash. Right after the crash, we don't knew what was happening. We all survived. This video shows the approach to the altiport megève. Both, the pilot and the mountain rate teacher have several thousands of flight hours and a huge experience, but it happens, that the gear was forgotten. On the video you can hear the warning signal of the plane, that indicates, that the gear was not pulled out. No one was harmed by the crash.
    After the crash, we tried to move the plane, but we had to get a tractor, to pull the crashed plane from the runway. You can see this in the further video.
    So i can give you the following advice: Check your gear twice or use a plane with a fixed gear.
    The flight was on the 29. August 2009 at 10:19 AM.

    I heard a similar story from my dad, who was an RCAF Flight Instructor at Moose Jaw in the 1950s. He said one day a harvard trainer landed with its wheels up after repeated cries from the controller to lower the wheels, which the pilot had forgotten.
    When the aircraft came to a stop, the conversation went something like this:
    Controller: "Didn't you hear me tell you to lower your gear?"
    Pilot: "I couldn't hear anything over that damned horn!"
    :)

    I'm a Pilot and i live in Brazil. During the WW2 (most aircraft didn't have retractable landing gears earlier than that) such thing happened so often, but so often, that they inserted an regulation on Brazilian airspace that on final you had to call out "gear down and locked" even after you completed your final checklist.
    It has been like that for 70 years, and well, sometimes shit just happens.

    I retired after nearly fourty years as a professional aviator and I can tell you that the thing to do after a wheels-up landing is walk around the damaged aircraft, touch the prop tips, and then roll the prop around to the horizontal position. This makes everything much better. The gear will extend and all the damage will miraculously disappear. Seriously thouugh, aside from the wheels being up, take note at the touch down position on the runway, He's well to the left of center, in fact nearly in the grass. Then note when he exits the airplane there's no wind, as indicated by his shirt, the trees, and his brain, hanging limp.

      +atwaterclerk Well, first we are assuming that the instructor is the pilot-in-command, which may not be the case. It's entirely possible that he was just along for the ride. However, if he was checking the guy out then there is no question about it, as PIC the responsibility for the incident falls squarely on his shoulders. Regardless of what the situation was, the thing that bothers me is that there are three people on board and no one noticed or questioned the screaming gear warning horn. But the really disturbing thing here is that I never heard of a watermelon flavored lolly pop and feel I've missed out on something!!!!! Anyway, Happy Flying.

    • @logancody8841
      @logancody8841 8 лет назад +8

      +atwaterclerk LOL That's very kind of you, but really not necessary. Good for you, you're absolutely right, I pull out the checklist even if it's only a three step procedure. People may ask, "Can't you remember just three steps?" The answer is yes. But once you begin giving in to laziness and letting good operating procedures slip in one aspect, that attitude begins manifesting itself in others. Continue safely with your diligent procedures and enjoy many more happy hours of flying. P.S. Have you ever had a watermelon flavored lolly pop while you were flying? That must be Nirvana!

      A few years late, but very good observation Mike. It's up to the avionics and airframe developer working together to incorporate such an alert. Either way, if the pilot ran through his checklist instead of thinking his years of experience as a pilot would get him through, he would not have made himself to be such a spectacle

      +TheMissendenFlyer Thankfully, wheels-up landings are relatively rare. However, the hair-puller here is that there are three people on the airplane. Now, the person taking video may not be a pilot, but in the front are a pilot and instructor. The "gear unsafe" warning is blaring for the last 79 seconds of the approach and no one one notices it. I don't know how you say "situational awareness" in French, but apparently neither do these two.

    • @robertgary3561

      jjohnston94 aircraft are insured for "stated value" not fair market. If it's a total loss there is no negotiation, they are required to write you a check for the amount stated when you took out the policy. Sometimes when you purchase the policy they may negotiate the top value then but after the accident it's too late.

    Hi Richard, I am from New Zealand and do not speak French, sorry. From my 5000 hours of flight time and regular use of sloping airstrips, it is my opinion that the appoach path was quite normal - probably not much over 3 degrees from level, if at all over the 3 degrees. While I could not see the instrumentation, there did not appear to be any difficulty with the speed getting high (which it would have done an approach which was too steep). It is a visual illusion! Safe flying!

      Yes, steep approaches in light aircraft are fine, even without terrain... I do them quite often because, in a single engined aircraft, if an engine goes, you're gliding. So during your approach you want to remain at a height where, if the engine goes, you can still make the runway.

      The horn in this aircraft is the same for various of situations. Even if you drop the manifold pressure under 15 to perform a quick dive like they probably did. Checklist is the correct answer, and in the final a quick look in mixture-prop-gear.

  • @MAMediaAU
    @MAMediaAU 10 лет назад +6

    I was trained in Australia. The following checks are mandatory for all pilots before landing. Two landing gear checks, amongst others, are routine upon arriving at an aerodrome.
    Downwind 'BUMFH' check: Brakes, Feet on the floor. Undercarriage down and LOCKED. Mixture rich. Fuel on BOTH and sufficient. Hatches and harnesses are secure.
    Final 'PUFF' check: Pitch full fine, Undercarriage down, Flaps full, Cowl Flaps open, Carburetor heat. (For Carb engines)
    A warning horn can be so easily ignored while under the influence of 'tunnel vision' upon landing. Fixating on the landing while ignoring other instruments could easily turn fatal. We are human after all and need to be aware of these potential threats. However, ignorance has no place in aviation.

    45 years and 23,000+ hours, never did this. My final approach check, as a rule was at 500 feet AGL, "gear- down, wings- level, approach -stabilized, cleared to land". Granted, there could be some type of distraction, but that self -call out at 500 feet AGL, I considered as the last chance for me to catch anything that could cause a problem that I could correct/avoid. Even flying a fixed gear aircraft, I always used the same 500 foot check. Sounds silly to make a gear check in a fixed gear airplane if I was flying one, but I never broke my 500 foot check.

      IncyABZ I'm not sure they are noise cancelling head phones. I'm not even sure that type of headphone is legal. If they cancel warning sounds they should be illegal if they aren't already. I pilot needs to be able to hear any warnings and the engine as well, so he can tell if it's not running properly.

    Well before jumping all over these guys consider that there have been instances of professional airline crews forgetting to lower the gear , as happened on May 22, 2020, to Pakistan Airlines.
    Airliners go into busy airports that have tower controllers and there have been many gear up landings avoided because the controller in the tower, or another pilot , warned the landing plane's crew that the gear was not down. These guys in this video didn't have that advantage because this airport was small and had no controllers directing traffic.
    There have been MANY instances of airline pilots and military pilots landing at the wrong airport. Another embarrassing situation to say the least.
    In this video you had a situation where the pilot was too high on the approach. His full attention now goes to getting the airplane down to the proper altitude in order to avoid the embarrassment of having to do a go around. He reduces power to idle in order to get down and that triggers the gear warning, but he and the pilot passenger both now have tunnel vision on needing to get down that their brains lock out all outside distractions not pertaining to the objective at hand. The rest is history, or as the french say, c'est la vie

    • @wf4919
      @wf4919 2 года назад

      You know what helps dissipate energy if you are steep on approach? Putting the gear down. Maybe they ignored it because they thought they were going to have to go around being so steep....then forgot to actually put it down when they were back on glide-slope.....then again...the gear should help you to gear down faster at idle....so...idk.

    First of all, it's 1 pilot and 1 flight instructor. As the pilot doesn't live in the Alps region, he flies there almost yearly to renew his altiport (mountain flying) certification as you are not allowed to land at an altiport without that (valid!) certification.This fateful flight was such a certification flight with an local flight instructor.
    The pilot owned several Trinidads and a Grumman Tiger AA5. Experience on C182 T RG as well Aerobatic on Walter Extra 300 etc. etc.

    That's a pretty fair conclusion to the hypothesis, and only the relevant Air Safety Bureau can give the true picture. However to us armchair experts, it would seem to me a mix-up in warning sounds to the pilot's comprehension of what the aeroplane was doing at the time. But on the positive side, it was a safe landing in that no one was killed, all walked away unharmed and uninjured except for pride, and the only damage to the plane was a bent prop, and a few scratches on the under fuselage.

      The approach is so fucking insanely steep. You had to know they don't know shit about flying when you dive for the deck like the wings are on fire. Even a deadstick landing wouldn't require such a steep approach. That impossible to ignore, ear piercing gear warning alarm should have been a sign to anyone with a brain that something was wrong. I guess they should have installed the slap you in the face and kick you in the nuts gear warning system, because that's what it would take to get through to these "pilots."

      Nothing wrong with the approach. I've owned a share in a TB20 and I have also landed several times at Megeve (though not in the TB). The runway is a steep uphill - it is a one-way altiport. The correct picture on finals does look like you are in a dive-bomber. As for forgetting the gear and ignoring the horn - well, I have no idea how they did that.

    • @remmahsroht
      @remmahsroht 5 лет назад +1

    statistics show that pilots are at higher risk during two points: the first 2 years after acquiring the private and i believe at about 8000+ hours plus. complacency sets in. Its good everyone survived. It is not that uncommon to ignore a warning sound if you're so focused, distracted or overwhelmed by an high performance flight maneuver (spelling) in an unfamiliar aircraft. Hopefully the filming didn't add to the distractions. Ensure checklists are followed and use extra crew as resources.

    I'm not sure how they managed to overlook the gear warning. It would be driving me crazy. Unless the headphones canceled the noise, which would not be a good thing.
