- The San Diego Zoo is a zoo in Balboa Park, San Diego, California, housing over 3,700 animals of more than 650 species and subspecies. Its parent organization, San Diego Zoo Global, is one of the largest[better source needed] zoological membership associations in the world, with more than 250,000 member households and 130,000 child memberships, representing more than a half million people. The San Diego Zoo was a pioneer in the concept of open-air, cageless exhibits that re-create natural animal habitats. It is one of the few zoos in the world that houses and successfully breeds the giant panda. In 2013, the zoo added a new Koalafornia Adventure exhibit, providing an updated Australian animal experience. Another new exhibit, called Africa Rocks, opened in 2017.
It is privately moderated by the nonprofit Zoological Society of San Diego on 100 acres (40 ha) of Balboa Park leased from the City of San Diego, and ownership of all animals, equipment and other assets rests with the City of San Diego. The San Diego Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), and a member of the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). San Diego Zoo Global also operates the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.
The zoo offers a guided tour bus that traverses 75% of the park. There is an overhead gondola lift called the Skyfari, providing an aerial view of the zoo. The Skyfari was built in 1969 by the Von Roll tramway company of Bern, Switzerland. The San Diego Zoo Skyfari is a Von Roll type 101.
Exhibits are often designed around a particular habitat. The same exhibit features many different animals that can be found side-by-side in the wild, along with native plant life. Exhibits range from an African rain forest (featuring gorillas) to the Arctic taiga and tundra in the summertime (featuring polar bears). Some of the largest free-flight aviaries in existence are here. Many exhibits are "natural" with invisible wires and darkened blinds (to view birds), and pools and open-air moats (for large mammals).
The San Diego Zoo also operates the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which displays animals in a more expansive setting than at the zoo. Animals are regularly exchanged between the two locations, as well as between San Diego Zoo and other zoos around the world, usually in accordance with Species Survival Plan recommendations.
The temperate, sunny maritime climate is well suited to many plants and animals. Besides an extensive collection of birds, reptiles, and mammals, it also maintains its grounds as an arboretum, with a rare plant collection. The botanical collection includes more than 700,000 exotic plants. As part of its gardening effort, it raises some rare animal foods. For example, the zoo raises 40 varieties of bamboo for the pandas on long-term loan from China, and it maintains 18 varieties of eucalyptus trees to feed its koalas.

i sometimes travel around the US to go to different zoos, and this one i havent been to yet!
zoos i have been to: Omaha Zoo, Como Zoo, Duluth Zoo, Minnesota Zoo, Naples Zoo, Milwuakee Zoo, and Memphis Zoo
I have tours for several of the zoo's you mentioned. I plan to visit the others soon.
And what about Los Angeles Zoo
You've been to Sea World & the Zoo, you should also see the Safari Park (formerly Wild Animal Park) in Escondido.
Other than that, I don't know what you have planned or have filmed, but I recommend the obvious places:
Knott's, Disneyland/C-A, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain

This is by far the most popular video on my channel. It's also my favorite zoo I've gone through so far.
The Mang Mountain Pit Viper is one of my favorites, one cool fact about them is they are individually distinguished by a unique spot pattern on top of each of their heads.
After watching this video it is now on my bucket list of places I need to go in the US. BTW if you have focusing problems with zoo glass in the future go to single point AF and focus past the glass and it should help grab the animal more so. Loved the video and descriptions of the animals.

if you come the public transportation in San Diego is amazing and it's very inexpensive you can take the bus or the trolley all over for peanuts. The bus stops right outside the zoo so you have no problem whatsoever and it's very safe.

Tom, in a couple years, when your back in the San Diego area, you should go to the safari park. In 2019 they got 2 platypuses. First zoo outside of Australia, in 60 years to host those animals. So if you’re ever back in the area I highly recommend going back

TBO I don't recall why, I might of totally missed them or they weren't on habitat the day of my visit. It's a huge zoo and it was my first visit.

Is this possibly your favorite zoo it seems to be every one else’s with exceptions being Columbus, Bronx , Henry doorly and saint louis.Sandiegio zoo looks great but lots of to small and outdated exhibits by elephant oddsey, the hoof stock exhibits , urban jungle , and the outback hopefully these will get renovated soon 🙂 thanks for sharing very comprehensive tour keep them coming !

I'm from St Louis and our zoo gets compared to the San Diego zoo a lot. Had to see what all the fuss was about.
I can kind of see why. Judging from this footage, the exhibits are laid out very similarly, and we have a lot of the same animals.
Of course, while ours is probably much smaller, it does have the benefit of free entrance lol.

You can really get a great view of the polar bears from the bus tour. They were swimming close to the side near the bus. My favorite zoo I have been too so far.
I always thought San Diego Zoo is the best because that's what everyone voted, but now that I have seen the videos I understand it's probably the best in US but it has got a lot of ugly metal fence showing how trapped the animals were. In contrast, Singapore Zoo is the best as it didn't look like a Zoo at all and some animals are able to roam around freely.
For a zoo this large, fences are needed to keep the animals safe. They do have natural looking habitats for the animals. Thanks for your view on the zoo.
They need fences to keep them safe in a big zoo like this. Also they not really trapped if they treated well

@Brad Johnson There's a Binturong habitat at Zoo Tampa that I've never seen the animal in. I'm sure it's there just very difficult to see.
That's my home turf there, defiantly changed since I was living there. I even remember the wild animal park near Escondido that was with the zoo, don't know if that's still the case since the name change to safari park though lol.
I didn't have enough time to go to the safari park. I will go next time I visit California. Zoo's are always changing, it keeps the interest up.

Not sure how many are left in the wild but I've seen them in multiple zoo's. They're actually pretty cute animals. I was disappointed when I found out they don't really spin like Taz in the Bugs Bunny cartoons did 😆

FYI, panthers are not a species. Instead, “black panthers” are simply the melanistic morphs of leopards and jaguars. Confusingly, cougars (as you may know, being from Florida) are also called panthers sometimes.

11:23. There is a big flaw with babirusas. Their canine teeth go up, through the entirety of it’s fricking snoot, and out the other end. The teeth can end up curving back and slowly bore into the thing’s face. And in rare cases, they end up PIERCING THE SKULL AND SHISH-KEBABING THE BRAIN.
That is horrible, I would guess the zoo's would keep the teeth from harming them. But in the wild the barbirusas are on their own.

San Diego Zoo´s entrance changed? firstly they had the famous one with some animals,then came the koalas on the san diego zoo logo now theres a lion on top of the logo, that lion is part of its 100 aniversary in 2016 also the lion scupture wast all ways there also was an elefhant plant scupture, it was removed in 2016 and replace by the lion sculpture
As this was my first and only time visiting the San Diego Zoo, this is the only entrance I have known. Thank You for sharing some history of the zoo.

We came last March from KC. Very disappointed. Not a horrible zoo. Really high expectations. Enjoyed Sea World. Next time will try the Safari Park. Our uber driver suggested that over the zoo.
I had to choose between the zoo and the safari park due to time limitations. I chose the zoo and had a good time but will check out the safari park next time as well.
I’m debating which one to take my fam too, (Saratoga or zoo)we’re coming from BC so why was it disappointing?
@@marykay8587 we live in kc so we trsvel to St Louis and Omaha every other year because theyre both awesome. We're spoiled. Omaha has awesome exhibits as well as an underground Swamp where its spooky and you see Aligators. Pinguins are so cool. A kids playground with waterworks. I could go on and on at both zoo's. Even KC is funner. I think with Sea World right there nearby they leave out so many things on purpose. I do believe if you have older kids the Safari Park would be way cooler. Little kids get bored easily. It might not matter to them. I would go the SD Zoo is very tropical and the bus ride is neat and you literally see almost everything in two hours.
San Diego Wild Animal Park is fun. Walkabout Australia(even has a platypus) and the Tiger Trail exhibits are cool areas.
