I knew in the build up to the first song it was Victory in Jesus! We sing from hymnals and I cringe at that lyric.
Great timing on this message. Let's just say I deleted a Spotify playlist after months of building conviction. Music has been one of my greatest, enduring struggles. I vascilate back and forth justifying questionable music choices under the banner of Christian liberty. Biggest recurring issue for me is carnal creep and sensuality. I love the music and listen to the lyrics and catch the subtle double entendres. Deleting that playlist was one of the hardest things I've done.

I've noticed the lyrics of many modern Christian songs literally entice the listener to focus on self and not Jesus. They will use the name of Jesus, but the narrative is one of self and that Jesus is like our heavenly geenie and not our Lord and Savior. These lyrics promote the notion of "what can Jesus do for me" instead of Jesus is worthy of my faith, praise, and service.

@ Brother Dave I also have a tuff time listening 🎶 to Christian Lyrics. Your statement is FACT, unfortunately. There was a Christian Artist that Posted on YT on *EASTER* of all Holidays, instead of Praisng Jesus. She had 🐰's & Eggs. Giving a generic watered down *" oh thank god est est..." *Nothing about Christ*

People can grow and learn to avoid error by taking steps to analyze what music they allow in their lives. Instead, people have defaulted to what is culturally relevant and have been deceived into believing whats culturally relevant must also be biblically sound. The world needs more preaching like this and less emotional worship like Elevation, Hillsong, and Bethel. Great work, Pastor Tom!

Helpful message. Two old hymns I was not aware had wrong lyrics, ViJ I knew about. Some years ago like about 10 years ago I thought about going through my collection of Christian music albums and recordings and tape or record to the computer only the ones I felt made sense to me, and did not condemn me. I never did get around to doing this partly because back then I thought maybe I was picking and choosing only the songs I liked and that might be the wrong thing to do. FF 6 or 7 years and here I am thinking I was not so far off. So many "christian" songs are full of junk, and many are just fluff, or mixture of truth and lies and others are full of wonderful words and news. I don't agree that the type of music is bad or good, except for extremes where the words can't be heard or they are screaming or yelling the words, or the rhythm is just out of pace or makes no sense, or some other instrument just takes over to the point of nonsense. Carmen and Amy Grant are interesting examples from my time of early contemporary style music, but I can not just blanket all of their songs as bad since they get some or many principles wrong. Carmen: Mission 3:16, The Court Room are great. Amy Grant: Thy Word, I Have Decided are helpful. But most of the pop/christian artist are mixed up with the work for heaven gospel in many of their songs, or they are hand and hand with those that teach that way. I very rarely now listen to any of the current "christian" music stations. You hear a song that seems fine and then there is a line or phrase that ruins the whole thing. Now that tune is stuck in your head.
I thought Lauren Daigle was good, Trust in You, and How Can It Be, but so much of her music has very wrong lyrics, and she is really not an example to follow these days. Just need to pick and choose and use the bible and common sense and don't follow people so much with music and life as well. Just like I get news from many places, but some of these places I can't just tell others to go and listen to these people because some have bad language, some have very human views, but I glean from them some America first conservative views. I don't see it possible to not have to deal with some garbage in our lives, but when it come to spiritual things, we often do need the weed wacker, and the ability to refuse to listen to false teaching of any kind in message or in song. Just like we need to turn off any of the news when it is from a source we now know to be giving false reports.

Thank you Pastor for speaking truth in love. I have often thought that one of the most dangerous places a Christian can go is a Christian book store. It is a place polluted with false doctrine in every way, shape and form. I used to go there and buy all my music and reference books but at the time I was only a babe in Christ. As a young Christian I did not know enough of the scriptures which would make me a prime candidate for deception. The items I purchased only re-enforced bad doctrine and it took me years to come to truth and disregard error that was ingrained in my thinking.

I recently started a new church and when they played a Hillsong tune, I got in touch with an Elder and told them why it shouldn't be played - it promotes a heretic organisation. He didn't agree and said that the words were fine and that is all that mattered. Ever since, I have not heard a single Bethel or Hillsong tune (except once during a joint church service at Easter).

I'm new to grace- beaten sheep my whole life. I've come out of legalism and this is the area I struggle the most with- I love music (playing and singing) and right now, since I've learned about backloading works, all pastors who do that have this NAR music. They'll tell you that they've separated themselves, but really they're saying they're "partially pregnant," right? "Listen to our teaching, but dont listen to SOME of the lyrics our worship team sings." That's where my concern about my personal growth lies. I left legalism in the church and now I'm becoming legalistic about everything I do say and listen to. I'm working daily on finding out the happy medium as I preach the gospel to myself!

This is a great message and I agree. Lyrics to songs are of utmost importance! Excellent! That being said; if the lyrics to songs are important and they are, shouldn’t the day and way in which we celebrate Jesus’ Birth be just as important a study of its accuracy and manner in which we celebrate? I would just suggest that as Christians, we should be anxious to learn from each other! Dr. Gene Kim has a wonderful lesson on that very subject. May we at least be open to the possibility that our paganistic way of celebrating Christ’s Birth may be just as harmful to the weaker Christians as the lyrics to hymnals and other so called “ Christian” music? Are we not promoting materialism and pagan traditions? Should we not be found faithful to the truth of scripture as we learn more, no matter how difficult it may be to change?
Can we pick and choose what we wish to hold on to and what we wish to lay aside? Just my thoughts respectfully.

43:10--- I was raised Pentecostal. Got Saved at 42! Went to a Baptist Church and decided they were preaching works also I would go silent during some hymns because my testimony is of great value and it would be a rejection of what Jesus paid for my Redemption if i sang in unison with those who obviously still didn't know the Gospel. I attended that Baptist Church for a couple of years while I searched for the denomination that I thought best represented the biblical Church. I knew it was not the charismatic Pentecostals who insisted that everyone speak in tongues, I found out it was not the Baptist who more or less made my salvation into a works program and wanted me to hold a book and sing loudly of that lie. So due to the lack of a church that seemed true and some pretty bad medical issues I decided to stay home for a while and I would watch on RUclips until I found a local Church. The one that seems to best fit the definition of the church according to God's word, is the churches that fall under the category of Calvary Chapel. I have a question about your sermon on Trojan horses, specifically #5 Music. Near the end of the sermon you suggested that people who are saved and born-again do not have power to cast out demons and you even referenced Peter to support your position. I'm asking a sincere question because of the upbringing I had and what I read in the Bible for myself. I believe that the Bible says Jesus gave us power over unclean spirits to cast them out, also Peter experience with coming back naked, was before the day of Pentecost! Of course Peter had that experience before the day of Pentecost because it wasn't until Pentecost that God gave the baptism of his holy spirit to live inside of people which was the very thing that gave them the power over unclean Spirits. I'm saying I think you just spoke in error regarding whether or not believers have power over unclean spirits and to use Peter only supports the position that we do have that power because Peter was trying to do it from the power of a disciple but it's necessary that a person be filled with The Holy Spirit. Do you see my point?

I was saved in the 80’s by trusting Jesus Christ as my savior , yes repenting of my sins. I’m still walking with the lord 35 years later more in love now than before. I listened to Carmen and thought it was a bit different but it did appeal to some younger folks. The Pastor is being an old wine skin here as far as Carmen. Repenting of your sins is not only impossible, but it also adds works to the the gospel and goes against all salvation scriptures. Big problem! Nobody has ever been saved by repenting of their sins.
That is law keeping and is a lifetime of works and has never saved anyone or contributed in any way to salvation.
Saving repentance is realizing that you are a sinner deserving of God's just punishment in Hell and turn (repent) from whatever you trusted in before, if indeed you trusted in anything; to trusting in the person and finished work of Christ "alone" for salvation.
You are trusting partially in your performance and partially in Christ.

The Psalms are the best songs for church, and even the Reformed Calvinist Baptists in Grand Rapids are publishing these beautiful $5 hard back Psalters with every Psalm in meter (it rhymes). This is pretty good and a sharp ear and eye to the issues.
I have never been a word guys, brain does not work that way, but I am musical, instrumental - piano, french horn, trumpet etc. My standards of music are very high - Handel's Messiah, many hymns, sang in great choirs . . . I find that the music in almost every church is painful to my ears. Rock, loud, too long, entertainment, fog machines, lights, show piece. It does NOT elevate me to God, it drives me out of the church hating the music I have heard. Many small churches sing hymns so poorly that it disgusts me and I long to be gone from there. You are of course compelled to stand when I would prefer sitting and drinking it all in. The arm wavers create this hypnotic crowd sense that states -"you better join in as well".. Nope, not me.
Where in the Bible does it address that music must be a part of worship. It is good when done right and has fantastic impact - like the Mormon choirs and great British churches and big pipe organs - that elevate and lift you up with astonishment. But today - that is all but gone.
I have sung in a superb gospel choir that changed the atmosphere instantly and it was fantastic. And in another choir where rap music was sung - I quit instantly. No place for crap music.
What has happened to the glorious magnificence of great sacred music? We need that back. Lyrics - that is another story and addressed here exceptionally well.

Here in charismatic pentecostal, even in some ecumenical baptist churches they sing and play songs in which they sing words calling on the Holy Spirit to come upon then , into the room where they are , to move upon them, to motive them for power and so on .This is false , because HS is with us and in us constantly. And filling of the Spirit is that which we achieve by obeying Him in thoughts, words and behavior, which these christians dont know how to do , because they are not taught right.

It's what the Lord Jesus Christ did for us that we're saved and it's by faith alone, not works. We're forgiven for all sins by the Lord Jesus Christ's shed blood. Amen!! Remember to study and rightly divide the word of truth (2 Tim. 2: 15 KJV). 🙏🙏🙏

Here in the US they call it worship taintiment. When the worship is second and the music is out front. Our church emphasizes the words rather than the.
Amazing guitar rifts or drum solos. That doesn't mean that we don't emphasize excellence in music, But the words are first and are either from scripture or speak truth.

There seems to be no way to get away from the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR). Their influence is especially influential in the music we sing in our churches and listen to on Christian radio, Spotify, etc. Some of their lyrics are extremely biblical (i.e. Bethel Music’s “The Goodness of God”) and therefore is allowed into more biblically sound churches. If a biblically sound song comes from a heretical church, should we be allowing it into our churches? What does the Bible say about allowing false teachers into our churches even if what they say at times are biblically accurate?

I had heard someone say that angels don't or can't sing. So I looked into it, and it did seem that angels do mainly speak. So I thought I would mention it at house group. I fully expected it to be dismissed, and it was. Obviously, I haven't looked at all references to angels in the Bible' so I can't make any definitive point. People seem to associate angels with singing, and my friends wouldn't countenance any other opinion. I doesn’t really matter, of course, but it was interesting to see the reaction. I have noticed people can be really stubborn and wouldn't change their mind, even if you gave proof that they were incorrect. Maybe we are all like that in a way.

Did he say , is that how you’re saved , repenting of your sins ? And that it was unbiblical ! Jesus’ message was repent , John the Baptist message was REPENT , in the book of acts the call was REPENT. What’s he talking about?

    • @jjsmoley

Most people think the word repent means to stop sinning or be sorry for your sins. The word repent does show up in the KJV Bible but it's meaning is not about turning from sin. The word in the original Greek means to change your mind. In the context of where the verse is used it's talking about changing your mind from trusting in your self to make it to heaven to trusting in Jesus Christ. If you'd like to know more about this check out Pastor's booklet on the subject. faithconnector.s3.amazonaws.com/northlandchurch/downloads/repentance_booklet.pdf

Saving repentance is realizing that you are a sinner deserving of God's just punishment in Hell and turn (repent) from whatever you trusted in before, if indeed you trusted in anything; to trusting in the person and finished work of Christ (alone) for salvation.
Repentance of sins is law keeping and is a lifetime of works and has never saved anyone or contributed in any way to salvation.

I must admit that the concerns expressed about some modern worship practices do trouble me. Music, secular or christian can create powerful emotions in us. Clearly, God made us that way so He intends it that way. However, I have heard that some worship leaders do manipulate people, trying to create a particular atmosphere suggesting it represents the presence of God. I don't really like it when a song is repeated over and over again. I probably am worrying unnecessarily but I do have concerns.

Didn't the two men's hearts burn within them when Jesus explained the OT prophecies to them? I don't agree when pastors minimize emotions. The grief of conviction is a pretty strong evidence of Christ in you. The difference is that we shouldn't use emotion to talk to us for God. But, when God speaks, it brings emotion. If you've been blind for many years and one day you could suddenly see, how could that not bring deep emotions?

We have to be careful what we sing and music can be a powerful tool for spreading error. I'm not that bothered about particular styles and up to the individual believer what they listen to in their leisure time taking into account of course the lyrics, intent and imagery employed by the performer. At the same time, doesn't mean that any style gets the green light to be harnessed in a local church gathering. Too many places of worship today are trying to recreate the atmosphere of a secular (alt) rock concert. Just look at how many contemporary worship artists rip off the guitar technique of U2' s The Edge and that's the more conservative non or not so charismatic ones. I live in the UK and much of the modern worship music put out over here is shot through with erroneous Kingdom Now theology. This sort of tosh gets birthed in extreme charismatic circles and because there might be something appealing in the music structure, doesn't take long before conservative evangelicals with a more Biblical eschatology are unthinkingly incorporating these songs too. This had to be said by Pastor Tom cos there's not many others picking up on this trend. The older hymns are not immune from scrutiny either.

It teaches people that they need to stop sinning to make it to heaven but that's not what the Bible teaches. Also saying "and won the victory" put's too much emphasis on self instead of Jesus. Jesus won the victory, not us. The Bible teaches that in order to make it to heaven we need to believe that Jesus made the payment for our sins on the cross.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Alessandra Barskey. If everyone who says they repented of their sin actually did, we would live in a different world. Many associate repentance as going to an altar and saying the sinners’ prayer. Looks good but can be very deceiving. It must be circumcision of the heart. My mind goes back to the many who “made decisions” for Christ during the Billy Graham crusades. One would think with that many decisions made “for CHRIST”; our world would be a much different place. Repentance is impossible to take place until one has actually accepted Christ as Savior! Otherwise how would one know he is a sinner. The Holy Spirit must reveal in that believer that he is a sinner; he agrees with the Holy Spirit and the sinner recognizes his need for a Savior; that Savior being Jesus Christ. Sin in its definition is actually agreeing with God that I have missed the mark and cannot attain it. Many a well meaning Church goer is mistakingly banking on a day that they “repented” at an altar as the day “they were saved” instead of focusing on the Blood of Jesus Christ that cleanseth from all sin. That would mean a whole different society.

    Actually your translations are wrong.
In the Greek the word is not "admonishing", but "mind-placing"(νουθεσία), that is, putting sense in each other.
After that word, there should be a comma and the whole thing should read:
Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom (-;-) teaching and placing mind(proper thinking/sense) one another(here goes the comma->),
(and meanwhile, as we do that)
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
--Logic and experience says, we don't teach and place sound thinking in believers, through singing psalms (chants), hymns and spiritual songs, but through teaching and conversing with wisdom.

Then God tells us how to do this right afterwards. God also told Moses to teach the Israelites through Songs. As a matter of fact, the entire Old Testament has marks in It to tell people how to sing It. We sing only Songs from the Bible and folks have 100s of verses memorized. They also learn Hebrew and soon Greek, so that soon they can read the Bible in the Original.

There is certain ccm songs that I very like but in my opinion secular music that doesn’t promote sin has better theology than Christian music. I find myself spending more time changing the radio station off the Christian radio station because of the bad theology in that is in the song. Hymns are better for congregational singing. Christian music needs extra sound to make singing it more natural to us. The person singing from the worship team can throw off the congregation by singing lyrics late.

It seems like you are missing the boat on this issue. Music is complex, but it is also mathematical. To say that something is wrong with the music, you must be clear, and not vague, or you are not really saying anything. Is there mathematically anything wrong with music? If so, what beat is evil? At what tempo is it evil? What notes are evil? What chords are evil? What chord progressions are evil? Or, what melody, or harmonies? If evil is not in the mathemtics then look, maybe it is in the lyrics, and I think this is what we can judge, though we still may not know the context of the lyrics. Which brings to the motive of one the writer, and the singer, and everyone else promoting the song. If the singer is a Christian, they are responsible to God for using the gifts He has given to them. Either they will be rewarded for living for Him, or their works will burn up because it was done with bad motives. God wants us to sing to Him from our mind, soul, heart, and strength. And who are we to judge if Carmen was motivated to sing in a way that makes us feel uncomfortable. God moves in mysterious ways, and we can't put Him in a box. We do not want to oppose what God is doing.

The Big Three of "worship music" (Elevation, Bethel, and Hillsong) are money makers. It takes superficial lyrics, mixes it with adrenaline fueled music, and it sells. What is ironic is I have visited churches and many enjoy the show. No sign of worship. Worse is the latest of these songs are easily forgotten after six months.
I dare any church to begin service with no music and say "let's worship".
The congregation and leaders would be lost.
The art of worship is gone. If you can't worship Jesus without music in your life, I wonder if people have the Holy Spirit in you. Why? The Holy Spirit lifts up Jesus and Jesus leads you to God (see John 17:3),
I can't listen to today's Christian music. The hymns still bring up profound lyrics that give worship to God through His attributes. Now we worship how we feel about our worship.

@moiraravji5070 We should do good works and be obedient as Christians, but good works and obedience are NOT a "necessary condition" for salvation.
You wrongly think that we are not saved by good works, but that we will necessarily demonstrate good works because we are saved. Therefore if someone does not demonstrate good works as a professing Christian, then they must not be a Christian.
I believed that to be true for many years, however, It is a deception; it is completely unbiblical and contradicts what the Bible teaches about how we are saved.
      Question: What are good works?
Answer: Good works is obedience to the Laws of God-keep the commandments, be perfect, do this and don't do that, love God and love your neighbor, etc.
Yet the Bible clearly teaches over and over that we are justified/saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ apart from the works of the law. Please read God's Word, which is crystal clear
And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,
      Romans 4:5
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
      Ephesians 2:8‭-‬9
I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.
      Galatians 2:21
For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
      Romans 3:28
Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”
      Galatians 3:11
And be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith-
      Philippians 3:9
Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
      Galatians 2:16
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
      Romans 3:20
Do you see the problem? The moment you point to your obedience to God's Laws to prove your salvation, you are basing your salvation on "your performance" and not the "finished work of Jesus Christ", contradicting God's promise of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ apart from the works of the law.
Can anyone who believes that faith without works isn't saving faith, explain to me how the absence of good works in the life of a professing Christian who has faith in Jesus Christ is not saved? Please reply

The RCC is but the ghost of the Roman Empire. It is pagan and it is works based damnation. True salvation is a free gift of God's grace as Christ, the prophets of the OT, and the apostles taught until the Bible was closed before 100 AD. This pastor used to be a Catholic and he was blessed to find the truth and leave Catholicism behind, as it is a fake and demonic religion.

Catholics use this to believe that Peter was the first pope and he started the RCC, which is NOT what Jesus was saying. Jesus was saying that Peter's confession "Jesus is the Christ" is the ROCK. Not that PETER is the rock but THE Rock is the confession by Peter that Jesus is the Messiah and came to save sinners. So The GOSPEL is the Rock...not Peter.
