I have several cameras from different brands including a Nikon Z8, Sony A7 IV, Canon R6 … but I still prefer the Lumix S5 IIx. Its IBIS, open gate and no overheating are still unmatched by any other company. I am concerned by the future of Panasonic, though. I hope they will continue on business for a long time 🤞

@@Tinvaak Because how exactly would it work out, they havent really released anything significant. Leica is in a world of its own, and Lumix, Blackmagic consumers dont really relate to them. There were some great lens offerings however there isnt anything to use them with lol; Blackmagic had 1 camera release, Lumix also had only S5IIx(and S9 that isnt really relevant as its a hobby camera, and older lumix cameras have bad AF so people tend to not go for them unless you manual focus but thats nieche community. Lenses are also quite expensive, and you are left with 2 bodies to use them with (Leica users for sure wont use sigma or lumix lenses with Leica's exceptional offerings). They are great cameras but ts just a bad package overall. S1/R/H line was released in 2019 and never got a successor. Lumix is a great brand but they have not been competative at all, even tho they had great ideas.

Out of all of the camera brands, Lumix (in my opinion) has the best internal features right out of the box. They have the most flexible recording modes and true anamorphic support for those who need it. Sadly however, Lumix cameras have always been crippled by Panasonic in someway. This has been the case leading up to the s5ii and s5iix with their autofocus and in the case of the s5iix, substantial cropping in 4k60 and the lack of a 4k120 option. I am speaking as a GH5 owner. I have owned and used the GH5 since the original launch window back in 2017... I have used and owned other camera brands since, but for 2025 and beyond, I really want to come home to Lumix. Lumix sadly will always be the "almost" brand and why so many filmmakers overlook their cameras. Personally, it's really is so hard for me to pull the trigger on the s5iix because of that 1.5x crop in 4k60p and no 4k120p... That is kind of a dealbreaker for me on this generation of cameras. I hope the s1hII can bring me home to Lumix.

The difference between Panasonic and it's competitors is that Canon and Sony will put out three cameras that have significant flaws in the time that Panasonic spends getting a camera right. It's a matter of respecting your customer base

Sony also puts out a lot of the same crap in different cameras for way too much money. The s5IIx is a game changer it’s the a73 of the 2020’s to me. It just does everything and it’s a workhorse

You make it sound a little dramatic. Lumix cameras at release are years ahead of the competition. They are built to last and will work flawlessly for years. Their only problem was the autofocus, and this has been fixed for the S5 II and GH7. Next will be the updated versions of the S1, S1R and S1H. If they release a S1H II with good autofocus it will be incredible. I have a GH4 and S5 and believe it or not I still use and love both cameras. Just need to know how to pull manual focus. I do own and use a Canon R5 but never used the 8K . I use the R5 for wildlife photography. It is OK for video, but was not designed for that purpose, and lack some video features that are present in the 2014 GH4.

The S1H still produces gorgeous images and the S5 has a brutal value for around 700 bucks used. That just speaks volumes in how far ahead Lumix cameras can be at release, when the competition needs half a decade to catch up. I just hope the S1H II isn't just an evolutionary Mark II update like the S5II, but a real leap forward and if thats the case, then all this waiting is worth it.

All I want from Lumix S1H ii are: the good new autofocus from gh7, at least 15 usable stops, good performance when it comes to rolling shutter ( a stacked sensor), the ability to record internal ProRes raw. And ssd recording. The most important thing, a good price point ($3000 US). The S1H is already a good camera for filmmaker or Photographer.

I left Canon for Panasonic 5 years ago because I felt like Canon was abusing their customers and liked Panasonic's commitment to firmware upgrades. Panasonic is right, 8K just isn't that important. This new camera cycle is just a little nuts, with the S5 versions not sure there is any need for an S1 anymore. The S1H won't be compared to the A7R line at all, that is a landscape/portrait camera that can shoot okay at best video. The S1H was always a video centric camera, I would imagine it will use some form of stacked or global shutter and have video features that will exceed the competition. If you do it right you don't need to really come out with new cameras that are merely updates to the previous model.
I will also keep an eye on Nikon after the Red acquisition, they could make some real waves as well. Time will tell.

I agree it’s taking them so long to produce another iteration and if I was thinking of buying a lumix camera I wouldn’t buy the S1H now. Better built-in mics and ADC, improved (rolling) shutter performance, internal prores or RAW, higher dynamic range, punch in focus assist while recording, and a few things for convenience and a couple of minor bug-fixes is all I can think of really. Both excellent cameras it must be said. I recently got back into wildlife photography, got the new sigma 70-200mm and 500mm f5.6 so I’m invested in the L mount for some time now. The S1H is still up there for my needs but could do with an upgrade for the S1R. It’s very good but I do miss the odd shots with the focus situation, landscapes not an issue but find myself a little envious of other makes from time to time. At my age I’m not going to switch to another platform but may need to restrict my focus on what I do if things don’t develop soon.

There is no need to incline panasonic to the megapixel race. 6k is enough for almost everything. We need to make sure that these 24 megapixels work to the maximum: make the best dynamic range of 16 plus stops, or more, better sensitivity. Make a more powerful processor, or add another one so that there is less rolling shutter, which can also open up the possibility of shooting full-fledged 6k 60p, 4k 120p. Improved autofocus. A triple base iso is possible. To work in the matrix with color, colorсines, so that it does not lead away to the magenta. That's what users and buyers want to see in this camera. This is not something revolutionary, but something that many expect and hope to get from panasonic in order to stay on this system and not switch to other systems.

  • @aldolega

Seems to me that it's a sensor supply issue. They've wrung as much out of the Sony IMX410 as they can, and they know the next cams have to improve on it, specifically full-sensor 4K60 and reduced rolling shutter. The only improved 24MP-ish sensor we've seen since the IMX410 is the Z6III sensor, and Nikon probably has an exclusive on that for a while, and Sony might keep it for the A7V after that.

I eventually sold my S1H, and used an A6700 as a stop gap, letting an S5 ii take main duties. If they made an S1H with a faster readout, less jello, no HDMI delay and decent AF that'd be enough for me TBH. In that time I've realised just good Sony cameras are now. The previous zombie skintones aren't really an issue now like they used to be. This is sad as I don't want to leave Panasonic, but they've just stalled now, and it's looking like the future is Sony. I WANT to be wrong though, as Panasonic colour is amazing. But I've already started gradually offloading L lenses now.

Still with Panasonic. S5 IIX. It's still the best bargain in the business for indie filmmakers. That said, I do worry about Panasonic's finances and suspect they lost a ton of money on those cameras introduced in 2018. Not sure what an S1H II could offer at this point to put LUMIX back in the game against Canon/Sony/Nikon. As you say, a lot of the differentiators have been incorporated into these competitor's flagships. I suppose the LEICA partnership might facilitate some innovation that could wrong-foot the competition and put LUMIX back ahead somehow, but no idea what that could be.

If Panasonic ships another full frame camera that doesn't have 4K120, or has a 4k60 crop, they're gonna lose a lot of customers. For any manufacture, these next-gen cameras should NOT have a crop or bad slow motion. If I get a full frame camera, I want to have access to the entire sensor and not be unnecessarily restricted. I mean, the s5iix has 6K open gate, you're telling me you're going to crop the sensor and not even give me 4k120??? Who's ever decision it was at Panasonic to do this, should be fired! There are no other cameras on the market that have the same reliable features that Lumix does, but they screw up something so important as the slow motion offerings????!!!! Common Panasonic, "You Need To DO Better"!!! I feel like the s5iix is 90% of the way there for most people. I'm excited for what the s5iiix could bring, but with Panasonic's track record, which isn't as bad as Blackmagic in my opinion, it's gonna be a long while. Finally, on the next Lumix flagship camera, I would love to see two USB-C ports... One port for charging, one port for ssd recording. I don't like using a dummy battery, this is the old way, USB-C is so much better.

I have been shooting on Panasonic cameras (GH2, GH3, GH5, GH5s S1H and EVA1) for a long time. I still own the GH4, S1H and EVA1. Although a bit "vintage" by current gear, all these cameras still work like new and deliver great images. Sure the GH4 lags behind the S1H and EVA1, but still comes in handy as a B or C camera.
Before getting the EVA1, I owned a SONY FS5 for a year, but consistently got better footage shooting Panasonic Vlog. That encouraged me to get the EVA1, and continued my Panasonic support with the S1H.
I regret that Panasonic pulled out of the cinema camera market, as the EVA1 is a fantastic camera. I recall many great reviews of the Varicam models. As good as these cameras were, Panasonic chose to focus on the mirrorless camera Lumix line. I never expected MFT to advance as far as it has, and think the GH7 is a really good camera for the price. If the past is any indication, I'm confident the new iteration of the S1H will be a powerful camera and great value.
I don't pretend to know the business of running Panasonic, but I wonder if Panasonic's slower, less frequent updates are a tactic to provide bigger improvements while spreading out funds out over a longer period of R&D time. Panasonic's market share is much less than Canon, Sony and Nikon, so maybe they simply can't fund R&D for faster releases.
Panasonic continues to surprise us with their releases, and hope their small share of the market remains...or grows. Meanwhile, I look forward to the next S1H.

I really like my S5IIX. For the price, it's incredibly versatile in the number of situations I can use it in. They also released the GH7 earlier this year. This leads me to wonder the following: The delay could be a funding issue. OR... it could be Panasonic trying to decide how they fit into a teeming red ocean of a full frame market. Perhaps they've been trying to see if being the "budget" brand (that can do an awful lot of what the higher end cameras can do- just not everything) pays off. Or perhaps they focus more on dynamic range instead of resolution . There's no denying they're at a bit of a crossroads with how aggressive Nikon, Sony, Canon, and Black Magic have been . A lot of economies right now are not creating extra money in people's pockets. It could be that Panasonic is really trying to navigate their full frame releases more strategically during difficult times .

I only prefer cameras like the RED Komodo for scenes where minimal rolling shutter is required. (I think dynamic range is actually a bit better on the S1H!)
I love the dynamic range, anamorphic modes & color science. I just hope there will be a 50/60 fps and maybe even 100 fps open gate (or only minimal crop) in 10-bit with minimal rolling shutter. Also the HDMI-delay should improve. I don‘t need 8k. For 50/60p I would be ok with around 3k. Leave the Super35 modes but give us an uncropped mode :), please 🙂

    My guess? Panasonic is
not buying another "of the shelf" Sony 410 family sensor. Instead, I suspect they are building a new custom FF sensor that uses the same dual gain conversion logic that their GH7 sensor has. If so, Lumix "might" have the highest dynamic range of ANY full frame sensor in the world. If so, they could recover the extensive development cost by selling to other camera companies too.

Most of us don't care about 8K or global shooter so much
We want the best image per $ we can get so with S5ii and S5iiX we are mostly happy...and for mft shooters GH7 is an attractive camera with Arri log C and Prores raw internal for 1999$...because most of us Lumix are more into video we don't need 40 megapixels sensors 24 for 6K is enough.
But we got to have arri log C color internal out of the box and Prores raw internal.
For me I am very happy when the price of.Lumix is not the price of Canon specially because of the gamble with overheating even with the R5ii...I never had such problems on Lumix or Blackmagic cameras and I am recording mostly very long content like festival concerts etc...for me Canon hybrid are a no go and C400 is too expensive

I really wish Panasonic would have done a 12MP full-frame sensor with the same capabilities as the a7S III / FX3, with the Panasonic PDAF found on the S5 II / S9. Just re-use the S5 II body to keep costs down... and sell it for about $2,500. It needn't have the LED top screen, the complex tilt and swivel LCD of the GH7 / S1H. But it would need a pretty good EVF and LCD screen. Since Sony currently seels the 12MP full frame ZV-E1 for about $1,900, I don't think the $2,500 MP price would be unreasonable to achieve for Panasonic. Again, just re-use the S5 II body and it's ok if SOME of the resoultuions and frame rates have time limits.
Also, Panasonic, please make a separate cable (the way that Sony has) that allows one to record timecode metadata in to the USB C port. I think Sony sells this cable for like $50. Maybe there aren't enough Panasonic users in general to make this a viable option, but if they could sell it to not only people using the S1 / S1R / S5 / S5 II AND all the poeple using the GH5 / GH5 II / GH4 / G9 / G9 II cameras, it might make financial sense.

I'd much rather have faster frame rates than 8k. 6k open gate is plenty of resolution. I want 6k 60p open gate. 4k 120p no crop. If the new camera has that I'm sold.

Simon, You hit the nail on the head with your rhetorical question near the video's end. "...if you want to stay in this game?..." Panasonic has a minuscule slice of the consumer digital camera market nowadays and I suspect the muckety-mucks in Kadoma have decided that its resources are better spent elsewhere rather than on a market that is ever shrinking, being swallowed by the phone camera. Unlike, Canon and Nikon, Lumix began in 2001 and doesn't have that tradition that stems from film cameras. Even Sony bought the venerable Minolta, another company with an imaging capture tradition. Its release of the Lumix S9, while admirable appears to have flopped mightily. Whether the S9 was an ill-conceived and executed product from the get-go or they simply couldn't bring in a truly revolutionary camera for the price point is a topic for many a pub discussion. And I fear the S9 flop is yet another nail in the coffin for Lumix. From this perspective, Panasonic's tepid emphasis on issuing updates of its flagship models is understandable.

Six years is not that long it only seems that it is because it's being compared to other camera company's like Sony who just flood the market with too many unneeded cameras. I like that Panasonic is doing it's own thing and not bending to pressure from other company's - you go Panasonic 👍👍 Myself I have always been a Canon shooter❤

6K oversampled 4K is plenty. Especially for those creators who do professional work targeted to a 4K output. I still don't see any programming available in 8K or screens that can output 8K. Maybe in the cinema, but 4K output on the best available tool does have a larger market in my opinion.
BTW, I am using my Canon R7 for my video. My only Panasonic cameras have been a point and shoot and the GX85, so my opinion may not be current.
Yes, 6 years "IS" a very long time for the S1 MK2. This could be bad.

Neither 6k, but that's not the point of 6k or 8k. The point is when you scale down an 8k or 6k footage to 4k the quality will be quite better than shooting directly 4k. Also if you want to crop on the footage for wildlife for example it's better to do it from 8k or 6k.

@@222jojo for me with 6k 60 and 4k 120 without crop ill buy it, if also has olpf filter like the first s1h even better. File size are already huge and in 8k 60 will be a nightmare, and heat management for now panasonic is leading, cameras don't overheat if they have active cooling.

According to sources, the key twist is that the camera will have improved autofocus. However, the information available to us is limited, so I cannot confirm at this moment if it will indeed have a hybrid 47 MP full-frame sensor, OR a DFD one like we have seen in the Panasonic S1R."
