While I dont disagree , as soon as he said under the bridge, californication, I said nope give it away. But let's face it. If I had to pick one it would be a song called 'what it is' on the album out In LA. It has a little of everything
Alex Famie that’s true. I started hearing RHCP a few years ago and my favorite albums are Stadium Arcadium, I’m with you and The Getaway the most recent ones basically
@Eliot I think "Under The Bridge" is everyone's favorite, no one can remake that song. Dosed showed their maturity and diversity with lyrics and their sound.
I have said so many times about scar tissue that I am sure there are better songs that have been written, but this is the perfect song as far as the sentiment, the lyrics, the delivery and the context go.
Flea wasn't a big fan of BTW since the mixing (and possibly the songwriting in general) basically made his bass contributions almost inaudible. It is very much a sound determined by John. Flea was about to quit the band when John apologized to him. All that doesn't take away from the beautifully written songs and beautifully created soundscapes on the album, but I doubt Flea would ever pick one of BTW's songs as his favorite or "rhcp essence"
I’m partial to “Easily” of Californication. The energy in the verses is intoxicating. The melodies in the choruses are beautiful and powerful. The outro is so atmospheric. My favorite RHCP songs are always on rotation, but Easily never leaves the top 5.
@@Jsh0w That song is just full of transcendent guitar melodies and vocal hooks, not to mention great lyrics and a driving groove - definitely one of their best.
John Frusciante thank you! I was just about to comment the exact same thing. The live version at the castle in Sloane I believe, is so epic the way John Frusciante taps the fret board... cheers from Florida.
The best version, for me is la Cigale 2006... it does trump Slane Castle. That song is open to interpretation and it's a favourite of John's because of that... (repeated 4 chords essentially - so much to play with!) But with Cigale you can just tell that John is feeling IT, with every note. It's a beautiful thing.
Sir Psycho Sexy defines RHCP's genre and style in 8 minutes IMO. It has all these brilliant sections of rap and ballad and classic outros and what not.

I hadn't heard it in over 10 years until I went through her music collection and listened to all the old records we used to listen to together. I teared up like a little kid when I heard it again.

“Give it away” is a good answer, even before i listened to their music in depth (beyond radio play) thats the song I most associated them with. Its just got that certain general energy that they seem to convey on stage no matter what song they’re playing.

RHCP played Yertle the Turtle live with Josh Klinghoffer couple of years ago..so if someone stuck with them during this era they might know it. But John doesn't play it usually so I guess he changed the answer.
A back-catalog selection which I'd like to submit as THE quintessential RHCP song is "Nobody Weird Like Me" -- close second, and also one from the vaults, would be "Knock Me Down"
Chima Idigo: Actually, quite a few songs from the Mother's Milk to One Hot Minute period address the band's grieving process for Hilel. I don't believe, however, that "Knock Me Down" was amongst them, but I'm not going to say it absolutely isn't, either. According to my understanding, it was more about their anti-ego philosophy -- or their attempt to come off as such.
Flea is my idol and inspired me to pick up bass and finally release my debut album. My favourite won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but ‘tell me baby’ makes me more happy than any of their other songs and I like a lot of their songs. Anyone agree with my choice?
0:52 I once said I vibrated in a 4th grade essay. I was talking about fighter jets, like in Iron Eagle or Top Gun. I used the cockpit vibration as a system waring fault and finctionally applied that to my body in writing. I thought I was the only person to ever say it like that! LOL!
The entire By The Way album is gorgeous. I think all the songs are expressed from the POV of something which can both be a beautiful girl and the higher self all at the same time.

Flea’s answer made me way happier than I’d like to admit. It was my first thought when I saw the title of this video.
Guys, the question isn't about his favorite RHCP song but about the one that most represents their music...
Give it away is THE goddamn answer
I would argue dark necesseties even though its a newer one its also a song that represents rhcp really well
@@sidneykiller123 what in the actual fuck...
@@cm4133 maybe i have a different view of them ? started listening to them in 2017 and have been throug all of it. but just seeing the darkness behind it all is something i see.... same reason i reckon ride on is my favorite acdc song
The getaway is so underrated and amazing album and goodbye angels is the best song from that album imo
Barry Berry Just started listening to it again for the first time since when it first came out. Didn’t appreciate it enough then, really solid album.
Barry Berry in my opinion, it is their worst album. I’m With You is underrated
I LOVE the getaway
Sick love
goodbye angels and go robot are amazing. So is dark necessities
God bless you, Flea.
Hard to Concentrate is being beautiful. We made it our first dance wedding song 😊
They have way too many great songs, all of em are such masterpieces:p
He meant Soul to squeeze
I'm so happy to see people mentioning a lot of songs from By the Way here. My favourite album too ...
He said it was Yertle the Turtle on Twitter a year or two ago
and he was trolling you
@@lonnyg5535 i don't think so
Yes sir. He mention that he just loved that beat so much
RHCP played Yertle the Turtle live with Josh Klinghoffer couple of years ago..so if someone stuck with them during this era they might know it. But John doesn't play it usually so I guess he changed the answer.
It's his secret favorite. I hope they play more songs from Freaky Styley on the next tour
A back-catalog selection which I'd like to submit as THE quintessential RHCP song is "Nobody Weird Like Me" -- close second, and also one from the vaults, would be "Knock Me Down"
it'S always nice to see a fellow Mother's Milk guy. It is the sound of this album that defines RHCP for me.
@j77 I'd rank them UMPP, Mother's Milk and BSSM as their best work. All downhill after Anthony tries to sing.
Taste the Pain💗
Chima Idigo: Actually, quite a few songs from the Mother's Milk to One Hot Minute period address the band's grieving process for Hilel. I don't believe, however, that "Knock Me Down" was amongst them, but I'm not going to say it absolutely isn't, either. According to my understanding, it was more about their anti-ego philosophy -- or their attempt to come off as such.
Chima Idigo: "Under The Bridge" was prolly the song of theirs that was the most overtly referential to Hilel and their ongoing grief over his loss.
This Velvet Glove for me
The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie is the one that hits home for me 😊
Chilli's catalogue is unmatched 🎶❤️
My personal favorite song is Otherside, and my favorite album is By The Way.
Flea is my idol and inspired me to pick up bass and finally release my debut album.
My favourite won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but ‘tell me baby’ makes me more happy than any of their other songs and I like a lot of their songs.
Anyone agree with my choice?
My favorite song is can't stop
A masterpiece
Great answer. Feel ya.and thanx!!!
I Could Have Lied and Soul To Squeeze. 💯
By The Way or Can't Stop encapsulate their essence the best, but my favourite is Sir Psycho
Shady Knopfler funky
@@Nick-oj5ll Funky and with strong melodies in the chorus
Freaky Styley
There are so many good songs, and it always changes what song I have on replay. But Parallel universe will forever be my favourite one.
0:52 I once said I vibrated in a 4th grade essay. I was talking about fighter jets, like in Iron Eagle or Top Gun. I used the cockpit vibration as a system waring fault and finctionally applied that to my body in writing. I thought I was the only person to ever say it like that! LOL!
Heres mine
1. Under The Bridge (Best song of all time)
2. Soul to Squeeze
3. Scar Tissue
For me, Don’t Forget Me hits me harder than any song they’ve ever made.
The entire By The Way album is gorgeous. I think all the songs are expressed from the POV of something which can both be a beautiful girl and the higher self all at the same time.
Flea is so sweet ❤🥰❤💕💕
