Nationalists simply made that up and the later Tatas stuck to that story because they didn't want to be seen as pals with the British. Want proof? Read Jamsetjee Tata's own correspondences to his family where he explains the reason he founded the hotel.

Highly ethical company..our first lecture during MBA and whole 2 years, in any subject teachers referred Tata as role model company.
