    I lived in Fresno for just over 3 years in the mid to late '90s. I worked just outside d.town Fresno on the other side of the train tracks and Fulton Street was closed off and never ever set foot there since there was nothing there at the time. Seeing this and there's still nothing there except for new trees a road and cars. Surprised a downtown development group never had anything planned beyond public improvements.

    The downtown area is a sore site to behold. Part of the problem is the past city council members who would not allow new businesses to build or build tall modern looking skyscrapers. You don't have to drive into downtown to see that it is old and decrepit. You can tell by driving on the 99 at 70 mph. Unless we get some developer to build some 30-40 story tall glass skyscrapers Fresno is doomed in rejuvenating downtown. Old empty building that are dark at night and the homeless problem it will never happen.

    • @ExplorationToGo
      @ExplorationToGo  Год назад

      I agree, so much potential in downtown but needs revitalization. Hopefully the city will come to their senses because Fresno is such a large city. But seems like many other cities in California are facing the same problems. Thanks for the comment by the way, really appreciate it.

  • @moialder252

    So sad. Everytime you see a video of downtown Fresno. The 5th largest city in the state of CA to have a downtown this bad. Many optimists always say "potential" but that has been the phrase for a long time. Look at all the closed, boarded up stores on the main strip on Fulton. Good thing you didnt showcase the "CHINATOWN". The only stores that are there are hispanic local stores. Other local stores that arent end up closing down after little time. The only thing the city seems to be doing is building low income housing. There is no money flowing in downtown Fresno. People with money in Fresno stay up north or in Clovis. This is also a double whammy for the city of Fresno because it's right by the 99--which initself sucks and looks horrible that already gives off bad impressions of Fresno, then once a visitor exits to look at their downtown and sees this, it justifies all the bad things about Fresno always thrown around.
    I also heard Fresno State recruits are made sure not to go through downtown so the recruits wouldnt be scared or discouraged. They drive them through a nicer part of town to get to Fresno State and avoid passing downtown all together. This is a lost cause and seems like the city knows that too, very little civic pride, little to no events on holidays, not even a downtown ice rink for the holidays which every city does. It's THAT BAD. Those moving to fresno avoid the area and surrounding. So the downtown core continues to just become more lower income and no mixed income levels at all. It might be better to relocate city hall up north Fresno so visitors at least have a better impression of the city.

    • @ExplorationToGo
      @ExplorationToGo  Год назад

      I actually didn't know Fresno had a Chinatown. But yes, I agree with you and others that Downtown Fresno unexpectedly did not look inspiring, but some areas looked nice. Unfortunately, it looks like most cities in California are facing those same problems you've mentioned. Thanks for the comment by the way and for sharing your opinions about the city, really appreciate it.

    • @moialder252
      @moialder252 Год назад +1

      @@ExplorationToGo Yes, I'm glad you took the time to make this walk video. Not enough of Fresno videos like this. Unfortunately it goes back to justifying people's opinion of Fresno when seeing videos like this. I know you mentioned MOST cities in california are facing these same problems I mentioned. But most other big cities in CA have more things going on in their downtown to at least offset the negativity. Meanwhile as you saw in downtown Fresno is has nothing, just the negativity. downtown SF has the tenderloin, crime, homeless, more homeless, and poop on streets, but to counter that still has the tourist spots-full house, wharf, painted ladies, lombard st etc, white collar high paying jobs, which brings in people with money which allows downtown SF to have top tier restaurants and hotels, and other entertainment options, a long with the Chase center for the NBA team warriors, and its by the bay. LA, basically similar to SF, has the capital of homeless in Skid row, but still offset by the cool touristy things in and around downtown LA. San Diego, homeless, crime, but again same as SF, white collar jobs which means money flowing and has great nightlife (gaslamp), popular convention center (comiccon for example) san diego padres, also by ocean. Downtown San Jose, was always boring but now homeless and crime is upticking, but still relatively clean and safe, has SJ sharks, white collar jobs that warrant nice restaurants, bars, nightlife,. Sacramento, its the capital, a lot of white collar gov jobs, NBA pro team the kings stadium, money flowing allows nice restaurants, bars, hotels, lightrail, has hipster streets and expensive neighborhoods surrounding. downtown Oakland, crime, homeless, but again has white collar jobs, bringing techies and hipsters in the downtown core allowing for money to flow and warrants entertainment, bars, restaurants, and businesses to thrive. Long Beach downtown, you did a video there so you know already. You get it, downtown Fresno has nothing. There are no white collar jobs except the few city jobs with city hall there. IRS jobs is making its way out of fresno. Saroyan theater is rarely used and big acts are going to SAve Mart center. The grizzlies which once was a division under MLB as a AAA squad for the Giants during their last 3 championships, got demoted to single A lowest and got passed around from team to team and not even from Cali so fan base is shot. downtown core and surrounding is lower income. No need for anybody middle class and above to live by downtown. This causes any new business to open to already be at risk of closure. There is nothing positive to help off set the negative. At this point it might even make more sense to relocate the city hall and downtown to another area of the city. Bakersfield looks like the same boat, however because downtown bako has less tall building structures, the lack of things going on doesnt magnify how bad it is compared to fresno because downtown bako feels small that it feels like it should be that way. While downtown fresno feels bigger and the blight and lack of activity gets heightened making it seem even worse.
