I personally feel we all get sarcastic from time to time. The way I see it is, often it is our ego taking control of us and sometimes our feeling of needing to feel more confident and superior can make us sarcastic.
Also, I find some of the most brilliant people on the planet are NOT sarcastic at all, but are very straightforward. And the ones who have the highest intellectual accomplishments don't seem to be typically sarcastic, possibly because they are very self-assured and don't have anything to prove.

This comes from a poorly done and biased study. The study called sarcasm the highest form of intelligence. They compared sarcasm to genuine, and other, not other jokes, referential humor, music, contemplating nuclear physics, or any other *activity*. This is obviously extremely well done. It'd be stupid to name the study "The benefits of sarcasm". No ego masturbation here. Nevermind the ego juice on your computer. It was here before this video, _I swear_!
The study acts like being genuine is diametrically opposed to sarcasm. You can be genuine without communication, but you can't be sarcastic without communication. Sarcasm is a communicative act. It is not a state of being.
Very interesting. I have a friend whom is very sarcastic but I have never seen many examples of his form of sarcasm, its very literal, and dry and in the "punch face" variety. A example is if I say "we will table this discussion for later". He will say something to the effect of "but I can't, do you want me to bring the table with me, I think its too heavy". on the one hand the way he does it shows how clever he is for words but at the same time it just gets the recipient more angry.
It's not actually sarcasm though. More like a lame joke. Doesn't mean I don't like or make that kind of jokes as well, but I don't think they count as sarcasm.
As a sarcastic person, I agree. I personally never mean to hurt anyones feelings and say something funny to lighten up the mood or just accidently and then i'll wonder why everyone is staring at me like I put a baby in the oven and ate it.
i really like how this video gives people permission to stroke their ego by claiming they might be smarter than others for employing ambivalence, instead of stating what they want to say and being respectful to the other person.
Aisling Lacey the Sarcasm Paradox: When something is too non-sarcastic that one assumes it has to be sarcastic, but since you can't hear their tone (due to a great invention known as the internet), you're really not sure, and then your brain explodes. That is what just happened when I read your coment.
Creative people, the ones invented computers and apps were never sarcastic. Geeks and nerds are always doing their jobs and don't thick too much about what people are and what they think. People who think they're better in anyway than others do sarcasm which explains how dumb they are not realizing the fact that nobody's always perfect
Sometimes people do sarcastic not to be funny, but to ridicule and confuse others. From a psychological point of view, people who do sarcasm just to ridicule others have a bullying tendencies. Thus their actually insecure about their own intelegency.
but are you American? because although i dont think highly of myself, i know that anyone with the sense of humour of an American is most likely gong to be thicker than me. Or at least wont get my humour and think im being rude.
You shouldn't just assume that about everyone,I use sarcasm a heck of a lot,but I don't think of myself as a god compared to others, and I'm pretty sure that not all 'nerds and geeks ' act the same way
i guess in a way, to be sarcastic you need to breakdown what someone said to you, think about the actual or normal response, quickly find its opposite, and say it in a confidant voice. Thats actually alot of thinking in a really short period of time.
By definition you have to sound like a jerk when you're being sarcastic. Otherwise it's just facetiousness- the nicer, soft spoken cousin of sarcasm. Sarcasm comes from greek meaning "to tear flesh" and then later "to speak bitterly". It is a form of derision. It's the difference between laughing with and being laughed at. By the way, this is how an actual sarcastic person tells you they're sarcastic- by calling you an idiot without actually calling you an idiot. Also a great irony of being sarcastic is that it's actual sincere- to suggest that someone is stupid through the use of sarcasm is one of the most sincere ways you can tell them that you actually do in fact consider them stupid.
That's a sophomoric conclusion gained through a flawed "study." They didn't test people's creativity after being encouraged to be genuine in a creative way.Sarcasm doesn't take much brain function-- it is always at someone's expense. A truly brilliant humorist will be able to make people laugh without hurting anyone's feelings and resorting to sarcasm is the easiest way for a wise fool to feel smarter.
xMatteo SWAT You misunderstand. We aren't saying that being sarcastic is "easy". Sure we all agree it takes some level of "intelligence". Our point is that it takes even more intelligence to be aware of an issue yet be accommodating and uplifting.
Dave, you missed the part where he said there were three groups tested for the same things? one group being sarcastic one group being genuine and one being neutral. So yes... they did test creativity of the genuine people, but they found that the sarcastic ones were more creative. D News however realized that the only important facts were that the sarcastic people were more creative so they didn't tell you how the others did on the study. Also, a "truly brilliant humorist" will be able to make people laugh at the fact that he's directly hurting their feelings and being sarcastic but they just don't care cause it's funny. Or he'll be able to make people laugh at a simple clean friendly joke. A truly brilliant humorist chooses a style and works it right, and for you to say that one style is "smarter" or "easier" than another is very ignorant.
Ive read a study that people who have sarcasm develop dementia earlier in life. I wouldnt believe in this bullshit VID. Its true people that express sarcasm cannot deal with reality because they continually vent negatively not creatively.
fucking ridiculous conclusion, im sarcastic a lot but i still have a firm grip on reality, just cus your sarcastic doesn't mean you spread negativity either. very late reply from me
Same for me,I don't use sarcasm as a an escape from reality,I am well aware that this might be how a select few use it,but definitely not the bulk of us
I was told I was. Also arrogant. And i don't see why, am just saying it the way it is. It's just a matter of people accepting the truth.Again... peace.
When I talk, no matter what, I sound either extremely sarcastic or just monotone, and people get PO'd because it sounds like I don't give a single shit about anything. Does this mean I am the smartest person alive?
"How do you get the benefits of being sarcastic, while remaining un-facepunched?" I love you. This is the best episode of DNews ever. In fact, can you start a spin-off show called "Sarcastic Science." It would be the most popular series on the internet I'm sure of it.
First off, this video was fabulous. Sarcastic is just who I am; it's very hard to turn it off. That being said, most people *know* I'm sarcastic and can handle me accordingly. However, one time I was with a group of friends and our SR and while talking about how I owned a bow I sarcastically said that I shot a bear once. The SR asked "Really?" to which I replied "Yeah," then proceeded to make up what I thought was a clearly sarcastic story about how I shot this bear, in the woods, with a bow and arrow. Problem was about halfway through the story I realized she didn't realize i was being sarcastic, so then I just continued making up a believable lie. Everyone else knew I was lying but she didn't, and it was the greatest moment ever. Long story short she found out like a week later and got really pissed at me. Still worth it.
makes sense to me. i always wondered why some people didnt understand sarcasm. *raise your hand* if you were the one in class that always had something witty/sarcastic to say right after a teacher said something warranting such a remark
I just searched up “what it means if your sarcastic” if you ask me sarcasm makes anything literally funny and adds a twist to a conversation. Which people don’t like cause I’m sarcastic a lot but I make it obvious enough to be joking.
i think it does say something that me, my two aunts, and my grandpa are all very creative and abstract people and we're VERY sarcastic between eachother and friends. while people like my dad and grandma aren't sarcastic very often, and are less abstract and creative.
So if I'm sarcastic enough in a conversation with someone that picks on my friends, then they punch me and I can punch them back. Then I wont get in trouble for punching first and he/she gets expelled and beat up. Win, Win to me.
With asperger's syndrome, I can tell from personal that I take things very literally, and when my mom and dad would use sarcasm, I would take them literally.
My sarcasm is so advanced, people think i am stupid.

The fact that you asked that question makes me think you are extremely socially awkward
why ive used it when i expect someone to understand something obvious, and sometimes they don't which just makes me face palm (figuratively) but if they catch the sarcasm they might laugh more so with friends. cant say i really use it just to mock people so i find it sad people take such offense to it and will eagerly insult you for being sarcastic.
why To insult, to belittle, or to get someone's neurons to fire for a change.
I was spoonfed sarcasm, we're extremely sarcastic in my country, it's a huge part of our humor.
Practice safe sarcasm, use a friend
Man, I love this community. And that's no sarcasm (< neither is that) (< or that to infinity ). nailed it.
Wow my name fits perfect right here.
(sarcastic clap)
I'm looking on the sarcasm list and I don't see my name.
+Stephen Andrano you are a goat
+Sarcasm Really? I always thought of myself as being a lion. An alpha male. King of the jungle. Okay maybe I went to far with that. I'm probably tiger at least. That's almost as good?
+Stephen Andrano ... And your a penguin?? Lol nice suit I'll take a martini. Shaken not stirred.
Last time I tried to be have a sarcastic conversation with a total stranger , I gained someone who wishes death for me.
😂
Yeah, if I would do the same if a stranger is being passive aggressive with me
I would never take a fence.
-Whenever I hear someone criticize somebody else I always @ least consider saying: "Wait a second, let me guess....This does not apply to YOU." I've gotten some snarls, but fuuuk 'em.
-To me a significant corollary is what seems to me a profound & very irritating human tendency put simply as the "I'm right & you're wrong, period" neurosis. It is eternally amazing to me how often people fail to resolve sincere conflicts.
@Unlock Minds tbh I feel that if you know how to use sarcasm it doesnt mean you are a yerk
I think sarcasm is underrated. Sometimes it is the best way to get your point across.
It really isn't.
That is so my response. :D. The times people were pissed about my statements are over 9000. :D
It's not actually sarcasm though. More like a lame joke. Doesn't mean I don't like or make that kind of jokes as well, but I don't think they count as sarcasm.
Loving the sarcastic comments ranging from:
"Me sarcastic?! Goodness no!"
...to
"I'm never sarcastic"
Hilarious. True comic geniuses in the making. #original #cantbreathe
When I red the title of the video I sooo did not expect you to be ironic in the intro...
Being sarcastic is rude.
I hv a mild autism and I kinda hv troubles picking up abt it..... 😑 but I'm glad Im able to understand the sarcasm a bit better
aside from being smart, they are also super TOXIC
As a sarcastic person, I agree. I personally never mean to hurt anyones feelings and say something funny to lighten up the mood or just accidently and then i'll wonder why everyone is staring at me like I put a baby in the oven and ate it.
How can I say no and mean yes at the same time, and yet say no with the meaning of no?
No /s
StealthMaster86 "No" duh
I don't know. I can't possibly have anything to do with the way you say 'no'. Or could it? Nah, it must be something else.
Sarcasm is literally my main language. Mum hates it lmao
Nope. Never. I'm not joking. I really have no skills. My brain is like a potato. Yay!
i really like how this video gives people permission to stroke their ego by claiming they might be smarter than others for employing ambivalence, instead of stating what they want to say and being respectful to the other person.
No I'm not sarcastic in the slightest
Aisling Lacey the Sarcasm Paradox: When something is too non-sarcastic that one assumes it has to be sarcastic, but since you can't hear their tone (due to a great invention known as the internet), you're really not sure, and then your brain explodes.
That is what just happened when I read your coment.
Aisling Lacey Is that sarcasm?
TenLetters123 It could be
My definition of the Sarcasm Paradox was, in fact, a Sarcasm Paradox. Mind. Blown.
Sarcasm? Cool concept. I should give it a whirl someday.
Creative people, the ones invented computers and apps were never sarcastic. Geeks and nerds are always doing their jobs and don't thick too much about what people are and what they think.
People who think they're better in anyway than others do sarcasm which explains how dumb they are not realizing the fact that nobody's always perfect
nobody's perfect at all
Sometimes people do sarcastic not to be funny, but to ridicule and confuse others.
Untrue
You shouldn't just assume that about everyone,I use sarcasm a heck of a lot,but I don't think of myself as a god compared to others, and I'm pretty sure that not all 'nerds and geeks ' act the same way
i guess in a way, to be sarcastic you need to breakdown what someone said to you, think about the actual or normal response, quickly find its opposite, and say it in a confidant voice. Thats actually alot of thinking in a really short period of time.
im captain sarcastic
iilikecereal copy paste troll detected, try harder boy. Get that brain to work.
Cole Brunner 1v1 me in club penguin scrub.
Im captain of don't care
E SC I'm Captain of the Enterprise.
* Sargent scarcasm
What this guy said!
xMatteo SWAT
You misunderstand.
+TheVariableConstant
"sarcasm is the easiest way for a wise fool to feel smarter"
Tell me again how nobody said being sarcastic is easy?
Matthew D
What? Could you rephrase your question?
We are all genuine and sincere people. I love you.
Ive read a study that people who have sarcasm develop dementia earlier in life. I wouldnt believe in this bullshit VID. Its true people that express sarcasm cannot deal with reality because they continually vent negatively not creatively.
warpull well said
fucking ridiculous conclusion, im sarcastic a lot but i still have a firm grip on reality, just cus your sarcastic doesn't mean you spread negativity either. very late reply from me
Same for me,I don't use sarcasm as a an escape from reality,I am well aware that this might be how a select few use it,but definitely not the bulk of us
Im sarcastic so often that no one know when im actually sarcastic they just think im stupid
I’m sensitive trying to be sarcastic but failed many times, and I think sarcasm is part of narcissistic people.
Sarcasm is a great way for hurt people to project it onto others while getting to think they're smart
@@blooeagle5118 true
my friend said something(i can't remember)
and i said "No" in sarcastic tone but i didn't mean it........ we're not friends now
Hm, am I sarcastic? That's an interesting question.
My short answer would be, 'no.'
My longer answer would be, "Noooooooo....." =O
I was told I was. Also arrogant. And i don't see why, am just saying it the way it is. It's just a matter of people accepting the truth.Again... peace.
I have slight autism and have no problem with sarcasm which I use quite often
When I talk, no matter what, I sound either extremely sarcastic or just monotone, and people get PO'd because it sounds like I don't give a single shit about anything. Does this mean I am the smartest person alive?
"How do you get the benefits of being sarcastic, while remaining un-facepunched?"
I love you.
Everyone thinks I’m so serious all the time and I continue to let them think so
Well, well, well... what an interesting tidbit you have discovered.
I just searched up “what it means if your sarcastic” if you ask me sarcasm makes anything literally funny and adds a twist to a conversation. Which people don’t like cause I’m sarcastic a lot but I make it obvious enough to be joking.
"A sarcasm detector? Oh that's a REALLY useful invention."
i think it does say something that me, my two aunts, and my grandpa are all very creative and abstract people and we're VERY sarcastic between eachother and friends. while people like my dad and grandma aren't sarcastic very often, and are less abstract and creative.
I dont have sarcasm.. So ur calling me dumb? How sweet of you
There are many thing that increase your creativity - in one study, just showing them an Apple sign already make people more creative
: Placebo effect
Here's a question: When you get a headache, what actually is aching inside your head? Are there actually pain receptors inside the brain?
That's why the Brits are so fucking awesome at everything
well, if some of my friends could understand sarcasm, i would be so hippie
Nooo I have never been sarcastic in my entire life. I have been so unsarcastic that I forgot what it actually meant.
I am a very sarcastic person and have had to watch my words over the years and have learned to control it. Sometimes it still creeps out.
Intro: Are you sarcastic? You must be so smart!
Me: I dont know if youre being sarcastic or not
It's time to be sarcastic men! We are doing this so that other people will finally learn something.
I didn't know what sarcasm is over a year ago, and i thought it was lies. Now i know what it is and i get it
Can a sarcastic sentence be concidered a form of lie? If I say "you look nice today" and not meaning it, is that a lie?
So if I'm sarcastic enough in a conversation with someone that picks on my friends, then they punch me and I can punch them back. Then I wont get in trouble for punching first and he/she gets expelled and beat up. Win, Win to me.
sometimes I can't tell if I'm hardly being too much honest or I'm just sarcastic person. that's the problem with asperger right?
With asperger's syndrome, I can tell from personal that I take things very literally, and when my mom and dad would use sarcasm, I would take them literally.
