I’m a retired professional photography business 35 years. Awesome seeing all the new equipment ....I bought a Mac plus in 1988 and my business jumped into the digital age. Now I just got a 12.9 iPad...fantastic equipment. Ted, thanks for another great video. I am a Master Cyber Security Architect, who has been in the IT industry for the past 34 years. In 1991, I started a Photography, and Cinematography business, and operated that Practice, for 12 years. Needless to say, at that time, businesses like mine were on the then cutting edge of the industry, and technology itself. In 1992, I had 20 SCSI drives, serially connected, with each having a whopping 200MB capacity. Those drives were connected to an Apple Macintosh II computer, then MII format decks, and when mated to the MII cameras, those modular cameras cost $17,000 each. This was then all connected to an AVID NLE, which by itself cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars - and you were editing video digitized from tape. GNARBOX v2 appears to be an outstanding solution to not only backup images and video, but indeed impacts a professional production | post-production workflow, in a very positive way. When I read the bulk of the comments left, I could only shake my head. Generations of people have no idea how storage technology has evolved; the costs of that evolution, nor how innovation impacts professional workflows. At the end of the day, I would ask any professional what value could be lost, if a day or week’s work was lost, without a sound backup strategy, and viable solution to implement that strategy - especially if that work was for a ‘real client’. I imagine that is what Errors and Omissions insurance is for, though insuring away Risk doesn’t do much good, for a persons brand. Again, thanks for another great video. Thanks to the folks who produced the GNARBOX solution. Be well.
The Ravpower file hub has a sd card slot and you can plug in a portable drive. Its a one button press to transfer from SD to portable drive. It can be configured from a mobile phone. Its also a lot cheaper !
Unfortunately Gnarbox missed the boat. They were very late in starting delivery which slipped from November to August. By that time Apple had released iPadOS 13 with the new folders app which allows connected cards/drives etc drag and drop to the ipad. So using sometime like the 6in 1 Hyperdrive connection allows you to connect your cards, ssd drives etc all at the same time so you can drag and drop files between them and onto the ipad as you wish. That is the solution that works for me, my ssd drives hold my back-up while the sd card hold the original data that i drag into Luma Fusion for editing. Works like a dream and is much cheaper than Gnarbox 2.0, with the ability to swap out drives as you wish.
I've read a bunch of reviews on the Gnarbox 2.0 and most people rate it as an expensive external drive with an ad that shows someone sticking an SD card into a wet Gnarbox. I had no clue it can transcode into ProRes and I don't think many do. That is a gamechanger
I’ve made the switch. I’ve edited all my travel photos & videos for the last year on my 11” ipad pro instead of a computer. I love it. Now with iOS for iPad opening up things for external HDs, i totally plan to get the gnarbox.
How are you liking it? I've been editing on my phone the last 6 years and am trying to decide between a MacBook air and an ipad Pro + Gnarbox. I saw one video by Benji Haisch that was a bit discouraging against the iPad. Basically said it's great if you're editing 15-20 photos. Not so great and very time consuming if editing say 400 photos from an event.
I just use a hyperdrive hub and a samsung T5, and it has all of the connectivity and transfer speed that i'd ever want. Love that it directly reads micro and regular SD's (though not at the same time), and still has a free USB C port for a power passthrough (and using the USB A port for the SSD still results in plenty of speed). IpadOS with it's far more robust file management has done away with the need for expensive all-in-one workarounds like the WD wireless box. The gnarbox is probably handier for dumping SD's in the field where it's too rough to whip out the ipad, but i just bring multiple cards with me.
The trouble I and others are having with the iPad Pro is that it refuses to reliably copy large video files (>4.3 GB) without corruption the files and making them unable to play or edit. I’m using a Samsung T5 ssd with a 1tb iPad Pro and I simply can’t copy large files reliably to or from the ssd. I had to change the formatting of the ssd from exFAT to macOS journaled to eliminate ‘I/o’ errors, but I still can’t copy large video files for editing. How do you get around this with your gnarbox or other drives? Any help will be greatly appreciated, Here’s a thread about this problem on macrumors: forums.macrumors.com/threads/files-cant-deal-with-videos-4-5gb-on-external-storage.2201575/
If you plug the hub into an iPad Pro, can you transfer directly from the sd card to the SSD, or do you have to transfer to the iPad first? If so it’s a great solution for a quarter of the price of the gnarbox.
Yes, you can absolutely transfer files directly between external drives like SD to SSD! It's how i manage all of my photo and video files instead of storing them on the internal memory. I just pull up two files tab side by side, have one set to my SD and the other to the SSD and drag and drop bulk files. Easy peasy!
I still can’t copy video files larger than 4.3 GB onto my iPad from my Sony camera. I need to use my laptop to offload the files from the SD card, and from the laptop transfer the video onto the iPad. iPadOS just isn’t ready for pro editing.
I’m getting back into photography. I just bought a Leica Q2 Monochrom. Looking at file management and transfer while overseas. You are exciting to listen to and informative. Thank you!
I am annoyed that the external storage functionality is still so handicapped on the ipad pro. Offloading and moving large amounts of files around is what I would consider a 'pro' necessity, even more so than having a full fledged NLE or any type of creative software. The current implementation is such a tease! Here I am, watching a video about yet another 'little computer' I need to buy to leave my macbook at home. lol.
The inclusion of usb c pretty much murdered the older lightning port iPad Pro lineup. Now a 30 dollar usb c hub and a portable hard drive is all you need. You’re honestly saving money at this point selling an older iPad Pro and getting a newer one rather than spending money on stuff that works with the lightning port or over wireless to avoid using the lightning port.
$15 sd to usb connector saved me on iPad Pro. tried the RAVpower for $70. Junk! Took 2 hours to transfer a 512 mb file over 5G wifi. Direct connection transferred 4 gigs in a minute. Only problem is you have to import into iPad photos app and only then does lumafusion access it.
Awesome video! I have a question for you, I don’t remember you mentioning wether you can work directly from the Gnarbox in LumaFusion to avoid copying the files to the iPad, is that possible?
Two iPads where I live and what they cost me here. Could very easily have a macbook pro or much higher specc'd pc laptop with none of the compatibility issues/having to use mobile version of software in the field. If they want these tablets to be laptop replacements, they have to offer similar usability without these ridiculous dongles and externals. What's the point of something that's half the weight if it requires 3 different accessories?
Great presentation! Is the throughput fast enough on the Gnarbox to edit from in a pinch? I’ve been a film cutter for 30 years but I haven’t been on Premiere for 2 or 3 years (been doing my music on LogicPro X). My editorial boutique (which I closed in 2017) relied on PROMISE RAIDs in both Premiere bays. I guess the iPad storage & processing is natively sufficient to edit with?! Sorry I’m having a middle-age moment. LOL. Am I right to assume that premiere Pro will not run on the iPad?
Love your channel. A question, when transferring video to lumafushion, can you download portions of clips to iPad or do you have to upload the entire file?
I fear I am at a disadvantage, not being a tech person nor much of a photographer. You mention a lot of things I don’t know about and you mention considerations I don’t personally think about. I do however like to have nice equipment for the things I do... do. I have not been able to go iPad only yet but I think I’m heading that direction. I suppose I’m just wondering, how can I learn the things you talk about so I understand them when I watch your video? At that point, perhaps I will be able to determine whether this is something I need, rather than just want. One more thing is I wonder if you would care to mention pricing.
@@timmark4190 Thanks for the tip. Any idea how fast the transfer speeds are? The Gnarbox is def out my budget but still considering the Ravpower filehub.
Very useful video. Please do a deep dive into your photography workflow with Gnarbox 2 - I am really interested to know how you use the Lightroom Mobile for when in the road, and how you integrate back at base. Hoping Adobe will allow us to export RAW from Mobile to Gnarbox in a future update but in meantime how are you working round this?
I got my Gnarbox 2.0 via Kickstarter and have had it for a while. With iPad OS the iPad is finally usable as a mobile editing system. I just got and iPad 11 pro to use with the Gnarbox. The wifi transfer with Luma Fusion is pretty quick but the real value of the combo is Ethernet mode on the Gnarbox. Transfers in Luma are super fast. I edited my last RUclips video on the plane from Las Vegas to NC. Overall it was a pretty darn good experience. I had to work with the Gnarbox support folks for an issue I had and they have been great. I also had the Gnarbox 1 which wasn't great the version 2 is so much better in every way.
E Y I’m very happy with it for the most part. I can’t think of better travel companion if you want to travel without a laptop. I bring my iPad with me everywhere may as well put it to use for video and photo editing. I love that the GB will only copy the parts of the video clips you mark in LumaFusion this can be a big space saver on the iPad versus copying the whole clip over like other solutions. The Ethernet mode on the new iPad Pro is great.
I know I used Linux back in the day, specifically Ubuntu to drag and drop files from an iPhone to my PC. It even worked well for syncing music to the Rhythmbox, which worked seemlessly, even pulled track info better than iTunes at the time.
Excited to see more about your mobile set up. I have been using Lightroom Classic, and Final Cut. I seem to need some new solutions even though I still prefer doing my editing work from the studio computer. Most of all, I need to be able to get some quick stuff out and edit while traveling... even if final editing is still done when I get to the studio. The gnarbox is a big step up as a part of the solution, but how it all connects as a chain from camera to final edit export is still a maddening process.
Been using the lacie option for months now. Gearbox is way more expensive. Ssd vs a spinning drive, you didn’t mention that. The lacie can take cf readers or whatever too, makes it a huge win for me.
I would love to see your mobile work flow. So you put your sd card in the Gnarbox, and import from there but then what? Where do the files ultimately live? How do you handle edit files? Do you only store the final exported images?
Nice product and great review. Convenience costs money. For those on the cheap, I'm fairly sure (with a bit of legwork) you can configure a raspberry pi to do the same thing pretty much (transcoding and data/disk management and filesharing). You can also then just use a bunch of USB3 SSD's interchangeably. The pi can also just power itself off the ipad with USB-C. It's also far far cheaper and modular, so it can actually do more. An iPad Pro + Raspberry pi is getting to be a pretty damn useful setup.
The price seemed really high until you started talking about the transcoding and the automatic backup. @Ted - what does your app suite look like right now for photo/video editing/post?
@@damiansa2574 The software clearly isn't just open source, the image processing alone is custom made in partnership with PhotoMechanic. There is more going on here than a Raspberry Pi running Plex.
damian sa It couldn’t matter less whether it’s open source. What other device is offering that functionality integrated in a single weatherproofed package?
Ben Balaran that doesn’t mean it’s not open source; you can always customize some bits of the project. I know because I do this kind of things on daily basis for machine vision and image/video analysis...
Thanks for the video, helps a lot. Is it possible to transfer data from an iOS/iPadOS Device to the Gnarbox via the App as well? If I want to back up my iPhone Photos to the Gnarbox without using a cable.
I saw this on some1 else's channel also. These things have been around for ages. I used something like that 12 years ago already. The only change is that's there's an ssd inside...
I've been using the DJI/Lacie Copilot since you're last video, and to be honest I've not even watched another review on the new Gnarbox as they clearly pushed hard with their marketing and got devices to a LOT of RUclipsrs at the point of release (this kind of saturation makes me sceptical). Knowing your experience with the LaCie made me watch yours, and it certainly seems like a great product, but that price takes it out of the equation for me. Personally I'm ok with a little slower on my mobile workflow if it's less than half the price. Good vid though!
How many gigs did you decide to get for your gnarbox. 500gbs doesn’t seem like enough. Do you clear out the gnarbox after your finished working on the project. And just have the rest of the files on a raid?
I’ve been using “backup boxes” like this for 20 years. This has a few nice features, but it’s still a hard drive file storage/transfer unit. The problem with the old ones was failure, either hard drive or other components. These things are great to have, but I’d like to know how reliable it is. Both in file corruption and longevity. I’m retired now and mostly fly a drone to document personal travel and other outdoor activities . But this could come in handy for longer trips.
you should use a thunderbolt 3 cable. that is the best with the max bandwidth . These are used for connecting ogpu's with both data and power transfer.
I switched from the My WD Passport to the Gnarbox. My biggest gripe with the Passport was its lack of Codec support. I have the Canon EOS R and shoot in Raw. The Passport does not support the CR3 format so I can’t actually see the image in the My WD app. I have to hardwire it my computer to actually see my Raw images. Which brings me to my other gripe, because of the way the Passport is formatted, you cannot hardwire it to your iPad for faster transfer speeds. The iPad OS Files app will only recognize it over a WiFi connection. I don’t have either issue with the Gnarbox. I can see my CR3 files in the apps and my iPad will recognize the device whether its wired or wireless. That makes a much better option for me. I just wish it was cheaper!
Javi's Boom Tech Thank you for the detailed explanation! I would call that a good reason. I am going for the gnarbox! Again, thank you for taking the time.
@Ted - what is the software you are using now on iPad? I know you did use Da Vinci but even on my MacBook which is newer it is painfully slow. I like the colour grading in there but the rest is slooooow.
Please cover what is the best LTE wireless live stream on camera encoder for lowest price ,which takes multiple usb LTE modems for bonded uninterrupted stream .
Looks like a good solution with solid interface functionality. Looking at their website it appears they have some great accessories. Thanks for the review.
Pretty much Gnarbox endorsement which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I know there are other devices like that Sandisk SSD and wouldn’t even want all those features that has. Maybe it is simplistic but that’s what I would want only. Personally on my iPad Pro I never edit other than images and videos here and there....more of a novelty sitting on couch or in bed edits. Rather sit at my iMac for those with Wacom and everything I need to be efficient. How much are they anyway?
Excellent stuff! Is it possible to edit and export to the gnarbox 2.0 on the fly? Just wondering seeing that i have the 64gb ipad pro 2018. Also, it seems that this wont do CF cards, any suggestions for that option? Great vid, looking forward to your mobile ventures!
For me, the biggest problem of editing on the ipad is screen real estate. My edits get progressively worse as the screen size decreases, so the ipad's 12.9 inches cannot reach up to my 27" desktop. (Using an ipad pro 12.9 2017, and a desktop)
Great video. I am looking into getting one. Please show a video where you show us how to create multiple folders and how to transfer files to these folders. That would be awesome. Just a 5 minute video would be nice. Awesome video again. Thank you sir

I just wish the small company of the gadget you just featured wont be taken or bought by a bigger one who will then start cutting corners and changeging the gadget completely. Thanks for loving Photography so much and share so much value information through your channel Ted!
i know on the 2017 ipad pro 10.5, the lightning port was USB 3.0 capable but it only hit those speeds when using it with a lightning-to-SD adapter, otherwise it was still USB 2.0 when connected to a computer with itunes for example. i wonder if apple is doing the same thing to the newer ipad pro since the wired transfer speeds look to be around USB 2.0 speed
Great video. I bought one using you link. There's a 100 buck credit toward next purchase on the site. Hows Gnarbox 2.0 with an Atomo recording monitor.?
@@PaulCypert great for travel and if you decide to go out and leave the laptop at the airbnb/hotel you’re staying at Granted, any backup device can accomplish this
Exciting product! My laptop is getting long in the tooth and I'm looking at the iPad Pro. I fear not being able to handle my data flow and have the iPad end up just being a media device, but this looks like this may solve some of those issues.

Would love to see how I could use an external SSD with the Gnarbox. The capacities are much to small for the price to be worth it for me at this point.
You can plug in an external SSD to the Gnarbox and have it back up SD cards to it as well as the internal drive, and be able to access either through the Gnarbox software.
Do you have any thoughts about Capture One and iPad Pro, i.e., Capture One not available for iPad? I just switched to Capture One but can't use it on iPad?

What’s the difference between this and the Scandisk box. Do they do the same things?
Any idea on when gnarbox will work with ProRes and DNxHR codec videos? Thankyou
A jam packed video. Thanks for the info. Anything Apple that is similar to LumaFusion ?
Was on the fence about buying this but am not anymore. Will be great for my kit as I head into the field for the first part of 2020!
Hi Ted, I have moved all editing to an iPad Pro so I REALLY APPRECIATE this series. THANK YOU! looking forward to an update for 2020 :)
What iPad do you use? If its the pro, which version?
This is why you just buy nvme enclosure and something like samsung evo+ drive and it should just max out the usb c spec on the ipad as far as speed.
Best review of the Gnarbox I've seen yet!
I would love to see your mobile work flow. So you put your sd card in the Gnarbox, and import from there but then what? Where do the files ultimately live? How do you handle edit files? Do you only store the final exported images?
What mic are you using, your voice sounds great.
Ken Schuller they are using open source software for transcoding and back up ;)
@@damiansa2574 The software clearly isn't just open source, the image processing alone is custom made in partnership with PhotoMechanic.
Any idea how better the 2nd version is compared to the OG (Original Gnarbox)?
Thanks! Very useful video indeed! Keep up the great work with these videos!
Glad that i purchase the 1tb pro.
Ram management and the storage pay me off!
Can you use it as a monitor for live view when coupled to a camera?
Thanks for the video, helps a lot. Is it possible to transfer data from an iOS/iPadOS Device to the Gnarbox via the App as well? If I want to back up my iPhone Photos to the Gnarbox without using a cable.
I saw this on some1 else's channel also. These things have been around for ages. I used something like that 12 years ago already. The only change is that's there's an ssd inside...
Did it transcode in the background ? I had a HD case with battery able to copy my CF cards but wasn’t even checking the copies.
Same thought here. They pushed them out to everyone.
You started mentioning XQD issues, but never continued. Does this have XQD Capability? If not, what would you recommend?
Thanks for video! This is very interesting device! What about card compatibility? Is it supports xqd cards?
you should use a thunderbolt 3 cable. that is the best with the max bandwidth . These are used for connecting ogpu's with both data and power transfer.
Thanks for the video. One question. Why this rather than the incredibly cheaper Passport? Thanks again.
Very Exciting !!! Thanks so much for the,, as always,, fun and educational ride... Joe
Have you tried the latest RAVPower FileHub, Travel Router AC750?
Pretty much Gnarbox endorsement which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I know there are other devices like that Sandisk SSD and wouldn’t even want all those features that has. Maybe it is simplistic but that’s what I would want only. Personally on my iPad Pro I never edit other than images and videos here and there....more of a novelty sitting on couch or in bed edits. Rather sit at my iMac for those with Wacom and everything I need to be efficient. How much are they anyway?
I wanted to hear how well it works with DaVivci resolve!
Funny that you have the 2TB version but they don’t sell that in the link. But this is waayyy too pricey.
There are two usb-c ports on the Gnarbox. Just plug a card reader on one of them.
For me, the biggest problem of editing on the ipad is screen real estate. My edits get progressively worse as the screen size decreases, so the ipad's 12.9 inches cannot reach up to my 27" desktop. (Using an ipad pro 12.9 2017, and a desktop)
Is dropbox the only cloud storage service that Gnarbox supports?
Great video. I am looking into getting one. Please show a video where you show us how to create multiple folders and how to transfer files to these folders. That would be awesome. Just a 5 minute video would be nice. Awesome video again. Thank you sir
Oh wow its amazing to see how the digital world is improving and changing!
Can the gnarbox wipe the sd card after I copy over the files?
With the capability of using external SSD, do you think its okay to get the 64gb than 256gb?
did you try the rav power? wow. as I'm typing this, you literally just said that.
Can you download from cf exspress b card?
Great video. I bought one using you link. There's a 100 buck credit toward next purchase on the site.
Hows Gnarbox 2.0 with an Atomo recording monitor.?
What size iPad Pro do you use?
Great video and great tip on the gnarbox Ted, was actually holding off on mobile workflow because of this. Very helpfull video, thanks.
Is it true that new iPad Pros are coming at the end of October?
Had me sold till I saw the price.
it's completely reasonable...only the cost of 2 iPads where I live LOL
At that point why on earth aren't people just looking at laptops?
Me too ....😖
😅😅😅 my thoughts exactly
@@PaulCypert great for travel and if you decide to go out and leave the laptop at the airbnb/hotel you’re staying at
Granted, any backup device can accomplish this
Now that is a Gnarly box...
Exciting product! My laptop is getting long in the tooth and I'm looking at the iPad Pro. I fear not being able to handle my data flow and have the iPad end up just being a media device, but this looks like this may solve some of those issues.
Laptops are a boat anchor. I love my iPads / pro /air! . Editing video is so seemless! Mobility is crucial for me. I refuse to go backwards! Peace Christo 👽🎶🐕🛸☮️😉
It looks awesome !
Does this work with XQD?
Would love to see how I could use an external SSD with the Gnarbox. The capacities are much to small for the price to be worth it for me at this point.
You can plug in an external SSD to the Gnarbox and have it back up SD cards to it as well as the internal drive, and be able to access either through the Gnarbox software.
WHAT SIZE DID YOU GET? is 256gb enough?!
Do you have any thoughts about Capture One and iPad Pro, i.e., Capture One not available for iPad? I just switched to Capture One but can't use it on iPad?
0:50 not everyday we fly on air plane right...
Very interesting storage device, but it does seem a little pricey. Good review through, you really covered everything.
Ted, you know if there will be an XQD or CFexpress version?
There are two usb-c ports on the Gnarbox. Just plug a card reader on one of them.
Use the cloud ?
Waiting for the LaCie Rugged Boss to drop....analyze both and then decide what to get
Hi 👋🏽 thanks for all your tutorials. I find them super helpful. Any chance you might be able to help me figure out why my gnarbox/lumafusion isn’t working? I’ve been having a lot of issues importing footage and both gnarbox and lumafusion support haven’t been able to help me. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
Great review and going to get one of these devices. But Availability is hard to get here in Ireland
Can the gnarbox be programmed to automatically convert mkv to mp4 by itself ?
Some DSLR cameras have WIFI and custom app for iPad or iPhone file transfer.
Great vid. Needed a thorough exam to make my own decision.
