Thank you for mentioning my video. It's really sad to see such an incredible device go out of business and I am still - at least trying to - cross my fingers that the investors who bought the company are going to get back into it at some point (or a competitor comes up with a new type of Gnarbox which can do all the things and more). It truly was a game changer for me while traveling.
Hey John, I currently use the Nexto DI NPS10 backup my photos on site. It’s similar to the gnarbox but what’s nice about it is you can put your own ssd drive into it so if the drive ever goes bad you can just remove it and replace it. I currently have a 1TB drive in mine. I think the model I have is discontinued but they currently have a newer model. Might be a great alternative for you. I have had mine for about a year and can say that I’ve not had any issues with it yet. Also I got it from B&H.
I had no idea all this was happening. I never stopped using my Gnarbox. However I was using it this morning & it froze. So like anything else I came to RUclips to find a fix, instead all I’m finding is bad news. Now it’s frozen on the dual role USB screen. What to do!🤦🏾♂️
I'm sure you figured out a solution by now, but I just plug a card reader adapter that also has a USB C port into my phone (Pixel 6 Pro), plug the SD card and external SSD into the adapter, then use a file managing app to move/copy them over. It's really fast.
I have it in the back of my head that there's a workflow with iPad... but I've been backing up to my laptop, doing a quick cull and edit on site, and displaying the photos. Have an also dead gnarbox two of the WD drives as well.
for gigs that require a second shooter, i bring sd cards/cfexpress cards for them to format and use, and give to me at the end of the gig (that way i don't need to return anything to them).
A year later… I pulled 2 Gnarbox 2.0’s out of a box, hadn’t seen them since 2021 and tried to fire them up. I bought them from the Moment shop in 2019 where the guys were bigging up the flexibility for travellimg photographers. Lighter is always better - as is battery power! Thanks for your video, cuz it saved the rest of my evening. I was determined to wipe the drives and pass them to a young mentoree but now, I can recycle them and get on with my night! Cheers, John 🎉
I know this is a long shot since this video is kinda old but my Macbook pro is not even recognizeing my granbox 2.0 as a drive. It isnt visible in finder when I plug it in. It also will no longer connect to my phone via wifi to access the app (which is on my phone and currently in the app store) Is this thing still a function hard drive/ back up solution or is it truly just a brick now? I cant find any answers online so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi John, quick question. Do you still have a copy of the last firmware (2.8.0.1750) that they've release before they disappear by any chance? Appreciate if you can share it . Thank you!
Just give the second one/two of your extra memory cards. If you allow them to use the images then just give them one card and they will have a backup on their card should you need it. I know it's less convenient should the card you give them was to fail once you get home, however, they can transfer the images to you in some other way from their card (if you only gave them one and they used their own in the other slot). Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, unfortunately. Alternatively, you can bring something like an iPad mini and an external SSD or just offload the files to the iPad.
The "My Passport" mobile version is hard to find too! I had the Narbox 1, and sold it. I was recently looking to get another mobile solution, but, no bueno!

Sorry to hear about your gnarbox 😥👎 I've been using the RAVPOWER FILEHUB AC750 for a year with fantastic results for my wedding and quinceañera photography - uses an external USB ssd - I highly recommend it - compared to gnarbox is all analog no screen just few lights but does the work flawlessly - and device could serve as a wifi router or Powerbank
Gnarbox didn’t have problems making systems. SSD’s weren’t incredibly hard to get either. The Gnarbox is just insanely expensive. $800 for a 512gb or 1tb drive? Sorry that’s a hefty price considering those drives are about $70-130 depending on why you get. I get there are other things going for it, but they outpriced themselves when they kept the price so high for so long.
This is surely it. The vast majority of people aren't going to be able to justify such a crazy expense for storage, regardless of how fancy, fast, and feature-packed it is, especially when there are other options almost as good, for less than half the price.
Are there any alternatives to the Gnarbox?? I have been scouring the interwebs for absolutely ages trying to find an alternative. Specifically capable of what the Gnar does, back SD straight up with one device without the need for a third element ie laptop. Please someone help me out.

John Branch if you are still figuring out what to do about Gnarbox I think its time to move on to a different backup solution. Because after you already told us that you will not recommend them now its harder to go back because if they even watch this video they may not want to continue the relationship. Anyways they are my thoughts you don't necessarily have to follow them.
I’m glad I didn’t buy it! My husband convinced me to use San Disk 1TB to back up on my SD cards and I can connect it to my iPad as well and see my images.
Their issue is that they simply weren’t selling enough of these because they were WAY too overpriced. They thought they could charge a premium as if they were Apple, without any of the ecosystem of other products to justify the price. They could have charged one third the price and still made a hefty profit but they were greedy and incapable of doing simple math. If you sell 1000 units at a $100 profit margin, you make twice as much money than selling 100 units at a $500 profit margin. I’m glad that a company with such a greedy business model wasn’t rewarded with financial success. Good riddance Gnarbox! Hopefully someone else will release a similar product with more realistic margins.
I know its crazy! I've been on the hunt for weeks trying to find something similar. finally found one and they're also out of business. I've tasked my brother in law with trying to invent one.
Update 2022: . The CHEAPEST on-location backup solution (for Android & Samsung Users) is to simply plug the Card Reader (USB-Type C) into your smartphone and drag & drop the files. This works extremely well, especially if your smartphone STILL HAS 👉EXPANDABLE EXTERNAL MEMORY CARD👈 options. . Sidenote: Please stop rewarding these Smartphone manufacturers with your hard-earned money, for new devices that LOCK you out of ACTUAL "PRO FEATURES"...but still want to use the phrase "PRO" to market their devices. 🙏

OH NO!! Why doesn’t anyone want a portable backup drive?!?!?! Why is everyone cool with bringing their laptop and just doing it that way? Too much risk for me.
@@jbivphotography I use my laptop lately...but I get a 2 fold backup solution....Local to my Laptop(SSD) and then it uploads wireless to BACKBLAZE (Online Backup)....so if laptop should crash/get stolen I have Online Backup in place and can access from anywhere and any device.(Backblaze is the TRUTH!!)....Also when I shoot a wedding I never wipe SD/XQD cards until my clients get final products...extreme by necessary!!! and yesy I have a lot of CARDS..3 sets of 2 XQD...I know....
Only take 1 time to loose a clients images...(8 yrs ago...luckly on lost 1 card..unrecoverable)
Whatever you decide to go with please make a video. I hate not having a reliable backup source on the spot. I also don’t want to take my Mac or iPad in addition to all the other gear 😫😫
I literally bought a laptop JUST to transfer files at weddings. Call me crazy but I think my 13 inch from 2017 is worth it. I'm not attached to it and I'm not that upset if anything happens to it.
I guess that works too. That just seems like so much. It’s big to take with you, expensive. Just a lot.
I have a 250GB one that I never used and never even opened up if someone is interested in it! I even have their back up battery. Neither package even opened, lol. I thought I needed it but then covid hit and my travel ideas fell off. Now I have other priorities and I no longer have a need for it.
I use the BOSS by Lacie its bulkier but works amazing
I was looking around and I saw that. It's discontinued however. 🙃
I saw your original video last week and unfortunately I followed you advice, with out doing a research (My Mistake) about the products and I found a great price on eBay, as soon as I got it and tried to download the software I found out the company is out of business!! Let me be clear this was not your fault it all on me!!! 🤨😕
OH NO! I probably should pull down my old video honestly. I still have my Gearbox but it's just a paper weight at this point 🙃🙃
Sorry to hear about your gnarbox 😥👎
I've been using the RAVPOWER FILEHUB AC750 for a year with fantastic results for my wedding and quinceañera photography - uses an external USB ssd - I highly recommend it - compared to gnarbox is all analog no screen just few lights but does the work flawlessly - and device could serve as a wifi router or Powerbank
I find it absolutely perplexing that no other company has designed and released something similar.
NewQ Filehub AC750 Travel Router...but use your usb SSD to connect....sd to SSD (USB)... runs a little slow but works!!!
@@jamesparish4489 you legend I'll check it out thanks!
Hey Josh take a peek at what I found and bought a few of them because they were under $20. Watch "CHEAP Gnarbox Alternative: Backup Photos Without a Computer" on RUclips
ruclips.net/video/UtAxvoCVHDs/видео.html
I use my iPad mini… works perfectly for me and has so much flexibility if I need to do anything fancy. Backup at the wedding, get photos from my second, transfer when I’m back in my office. Works for me!
Any links to this setup?
@@Cary_mac I don’t have any specific links for it. I’m sure you can find something somewhere but it’s a simple as having a card reader for the iPad. I use my iPad mini 6 which using USB-C
LaCie DJI Copilot BOSS Computer-Free In-Field Direct Backup and Power Bank with SD Reader, 2TB
Ah man it says in Adorama these aren’t available either now. Noo!
The company is also dead
I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on it too. 🥴
I’m glad I didn’t buy it! My husband convinced me to use San Disk 1TB to back up on my SD cards and I can connect it to my iPad as well and see my images.
That's awesome. Sounds like it was a good choice.
You wouldnt think it would be hard to make a product like this but gnarbox seems the only game in town
I know!! It makes no sense. Like HOW are they the ONLY people trying to make something like this. It was so good. I'm so sad 😫
@@jbivphotography I wonder if theres a way to use like an phone with a usb otg reader.
I know its crazy! I've been on the hunt for weeks trying to find something similar. finally found one and they're also out of business. I've tasked my brother in law with trying to invent one.
Try a NewQ file hub should fix your problem.
I've been watching you for at least a year now and I just noticed... are those playstation 1 games behind you?!
Yep yep. I have my old PS1 and some games back there. I'm bout that life. 😂
@@jbivphotography love it 😂
Update 2022:
.
1TB Gnarbox 2.0 brand new selling at $200
Where at? Honestly are they even useable?
@@jbivphotographyYes, they're still usable. You just should not update them as the last update. They gave crashes and you have to reset it if you have an SD card that you put the software on to fix it
If yours is looping or stuck on the loading page format an SD Card (search - How to Properly 'Format' Your GNARBOX 2.0 SSD - it's the first link) and follow the instructions. I would recommend keeping that SD Card on hand in case issues arise in the future. That should fix any issue you have with it. Let me know if that helps and if the community could boost this post for him to see so he can make a video and let us know if it worked for him, that would be great so John can have his Gnarbox working again! *Wish I saw this sooner so that I could have helped
Tried this. You cannot actually download the "file" completely.
@@simisi7394 yes you can I did it. You have to do it on a Windows computer
It sounds like you got hooked up with a shitty product that paid you to say how good it was. The company went downhill, stopped paying you and now you’re telling us the product is shitty.
Cheap laptop could be an option. Like a 300 dollar just for sd card to ssd transfer at weddings
Nexto di, same concept of gnarbox, but nexto di arrived earlier. Now is owned by tv logic.
I’m going to have to check it out. Because I’m so sad about my Gnarbox.
maybe you could build yourself a gnarbox with just an Raspberry Pi and some coding
Notify me when you are confident I can toss mine in the trash. Getting tired of looking at this piece of junk
Here's an option: ruclips.net/video/0k3zeoQSYBM/видео.html NEXTO DI full transparency -- I've not done much research on this device. I saw the video and thought of you.
I was looking around at it. It seems like it's discontinued. 🙃
NEXTO DI - check that out. :)
It's discontinued 🙃
Wow... What a disappointment. I watched your video about how you like it and I'm sorry it's all I have to say.
I'm pretty sad about it. I TRULY enjoyed and loved this product. Honestly it messes up my wedding day workflow and everything. Gotta find something to replace it soon.
They're still selling because... Well... Capitalism
I loved them too, but honestly my most used method right after a wedding is just importing the photos via Bluetooth straight to a Google drive back up shared folder. Usually takes me about 20m or so but I love having access to everything on the go, makes mobile editing a bit more friendly too.
You can buy "xfermax"
I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for letting me know.
