Persistent cough after chest infection

  • When should you worry about persistent coughing after a chest infection? A cough can last for 6-8 weeks after recovering from a chest infection such as pneumonia, COVID, influenza or even a common cold. If the cough is slowly getting better in a few weeks, there is probably nothing to worry about. However, a cough lasting for longer than 2 months, which is also maybe worsening or is accompanied by other symptoms probably requires a check-up with your doctor to find what the cause is and what the most appropriate treatment would be.

Thank you for this video. I agree with all these points. I also noticed different positions can reduce coughing. Taking cough medicine and albuterol just seems to make things worse.

I had bronchitis over the winter (4 months ago or so)it eventually went away but since then I will randomly get the same type of phlegm and a small cough? All I read about is Chronic Bronchitis and it’s freaking me out.

For that cough (after bronchitis) can we use Symbicort or Ultibro Breezhaler for relief for a month and leave taking it?
Is Ultibro Breezhaler as good as symbicort?

It's been about five weeks for me... thanks for this. I seem to be pretty consistently the same, sometimes a bit better other times worse... strange.

@@DrStefanCristianStanel Thanks so much - I did. I got a full work up and apparently there was some minor lung damage from the lung infection, or a previous lung problem that they I never noticed. Apparently, not serious. It may heal up and the chest pain may not have been associated with it. It may just be from the coughing and take time to go away. That said, they scanned me and couldn't find any other abnormalities. Also did some blood work and everything was normal. It could also be post-covid issues. Now I am dealing with the gastritis that I apparently gave myself by worrying too much and my chest is slowly getting better.
      Thanks for the message.

HI I have the same issue. Cold and cough won't go away. What scans and tests did you do? Also, for lung damage, did doctor advise anything specific?
      Please reply if possible
      Thanks

My cough and chest pain lasted for about 8 months. I would suggest going to a doctor to get checked out. I had an x-ray, CT scan, a host of blood tests and nothing significant was found. Eventually, working with a responsible neurologist, I was able to find a possible cause - acid reflux. I tried his approach - short-term PPIs - elevating the top of my bed and not eating after 3 in the afternoon. It seemed to work, after I stopped eating dinners the cough came and went for a while and then disappeared. Another possibility would be post-viral problems from Covid or some other illness. However, this is one of several illnesses I have had that could have dozens of causes. In addition, later in the same year I had an Epstein Barr reactivation - so that may have been a possible cause. I was also horribly overworked... God only knows. @@revenant8061

Are persistent or post-viral coughs still contagious?
