I love the deep dive into the variables, it's like my brain at 3 in the morning, "What if, what if, I wonder..."
The art and science of hand dyeing are definitely hand in hand.
    Thanks Doc!

Rebecca, I love your control-the-variables, scientific approach to color/yarn experiments. (I wing it.) And I happily admire your pursuit of the whys and wherefore of consistency. :)

I like that you both use scientific reasoning and exploration to dye yarn as well as just going by "vibes". I really appreciate comparisons with various controls but sometimes you really just want a fun and unique colorway and the best way to get that is to just play!

Your scientific approach helps me understand the whys and whetefores of what is, essentially to me, a creative process equalling the secrets and mysteries of the cosmos. I happily dabble but it is a totally uncontrolled result; couldn't repeat any results if my life depended on it!

Immediate dip dye of a just speckled yarn is a really cool effect! I'd want to try it with a few known bleeders/breakers!
And thanks for the visual reminder of why one washes dyed wool in cold water!!

They are all gorgeous but a definite reminder to always wash in cold water!!

A lesson seems to be, "Expect the unexpected. I enjoy going in to your PhD mind. Fun learning, as usual.

Great follow up. I was going to suggest that synthrapol might be a game changer, but you were on it!
ETA: all those skeins would make a great set

I am really liking this series. What if you microwave set the speckled yarn? Would microwaving the yarn reduce the likelihood of the dye bleeding or spreading. I enjoy yarn dying videos. I like that because of your education you explain more about what is going on in the dying process.

So glad you did the follow up,, Was interesting to listen to science you and art you having an inner struggle with how far to go . But in this case science you needed more , so that art you had another tool in the palette box. Im very curious though what this experiment might have looked like had Kelly green not been involved at all, as it so dominated the outcomes.
    Learned a lot thankyou.

Just a suggestion, after heat setting a speckle yarn maybe you should let it cool then wash before dip dying?

This would be an option that could work, however, that may not prevent some bleeding of the greens. Often it is heat that causes some more of the bleeding to happen - vs just a little unbound dye. (Note that the color leaving the steam set dip dyed skein was minimal until it was in the pot for a little bit.)

Blue or green, they're all pretty.
