Damien Trainor vs Rungchai Makate II: 24.11.07 WMC MAD 57kg World Title.

Even though I'd beaten quite a few world champions prior to this fight, my first sniff of a world title was back in 2007. This fight was a rematch against Rungchai Makate for the WMC MAD 57kg World Title. Rungchai actually originated from the same gym as Coban Lookchaomaesaitong which was a punch orientated gym, later he moved to the famous WMC camp. My usual weight was 55kg but I went up to fight Rungchai. Our first fight was in 2002 and I have to say he really did a number on me as the Doctor had to stop the bout after the 2nd round due to cuts from elbows. This time the rematch went to the judges scorecards. Many thought I did enough to win but the judges and if I'm honest myself knew that Rungchai had just done enough to nick it. The crazy thing is if I'd have won that world title that night I was actually going to retire. I was devastated that I'd lost my first shot at a world title. I had some time off after that to lick my wounds and didn't fight again for another 15 months. It's funny how things workout as this 3rd stage (I've had two big lays off which has unintentionally put my career in three parts) of my fighting career was probably my best era....so I could have missed out on so much if I'd have retired that night.

Was this the turning point fight that made you give even more in every fight afterwards? Even though it looked like you'd given enough anyway, but you'd mentally beat yourself up, if you weren't really damaged or with pink ribs afterwards? And would you beat him now with your spiderman costume?

I’ve seen 1000’s of fights and that was one of the sweetest! Had everything. Good sportsmanship, blistering technique and bulldog spirit. The judges were on drugs IMO. A draw would have been an unpopular but fair decision. This scrap was a privilege to watch!
