It's an attitude, a time, a feel, a darkness shrouded in rebellion.

Grunge is a region. It is not entirely a sound, but partly. Mostly it is a region. Grunge is specific to the Pacific Northwest. The look, attitude, the way of life of the people that live there and make music in that region define what is Grunge. You can't down tune your guitar and play Sabbath riffs if you're from San Diego and call yourself a "Grunge" band. It just ain't what it is.

Dont focus too much on the word "grunge" - first of all its a... LABEL! Or like Cobain said nicely in the song "Aero Zeppelin" - its a BRAND.
In the late 80s/90s there was a special rock trend in and around Seattle. The musicians there were kind of independent from mainstream influences and just played different rock styles.
The most important issue was a kind of rawness. The songs were just straight rock n roll. Thats what was missing in the second half of the 80s. There were a few bands who did this but there was a lot hair metal and poser rock.
Thats why also metal became bigger and bigger - the mainstream rock n roll became more and more disgusting although there were some really great bands like Guns n Roses.
The sound of the folks from Seattle was supposed to be raw and... "grunge". The guitar sounded dirty like its supposed to be in Rock n Roll.
But in the end... its really a brand to give Rock n Roll another name to sell it. Music marketing of course couldnt believe they could have sold it without a "fresh" name. Which was absurd abd stupid. But we all know that music industry... or... industry anywhere has a lot stupid ideas to sell stuff. They call it marketing. Normal people call it bullshit 😀

grunge is a way of life. an ironic self-assessment of the rebellious maybe.
I need to say, I had the best time of my life in the 90s. 🙃 ...why is time moving so fast? 🤔

@@KingOfThePitTV In 1991 they played in my town. But unfortunately I never saw the band live. - it's kind of heartbreaking that you can't bring some moments back...
