  • Please always do your research before bringing a pet home. They don't choose to live with you, they don't choose how they're kept. when you own a pet it is your responsibility to give them the correct care, so they can have the good life that they deserve. If you're ever unsure about pet care, don't be afraid to ask. there are plenty of people out there who are willing to help you.

I adopted the hamster at 11:50 on that disgusting wheel before this video was posted, I guess maybe the ad was never taken down. Dash is in a good home now in a large tank with a 12 inch silent spinner. He was vet checked the day I got him and he’s incredibly lucky there’s no damage to his back. He is estimated about a year and a half old so I don’t have much time with him but I’m glad he is living out the rest of his life with me. And no I didn’t pay $1 for him... he was $15

I wish they would make these awful store bought cages illegal. If the minimum size for a pet is larger then a store bought critter trail, why are they even legal?

    • @howling_starr
      @howling_starr 6 лет назад +24

Better yet, make those awful chain pet stores illegal. or at least increase regulations. Places like Petsmart, Petco, etc. keep their animals in terrible condition a lot of the time. I absolutely hate seeing the animals in them. Also, a ton of their employees aren't knowledgeable on animal care, and spoonfed bullshit in hopes of getting more money out of people. This is a big reason why you see so many reptiles going home in tiny cages and lacking the proper setup and care. They're all about making money, and care nothing for the animal's life.

I was at the pet store a few days ago, picking up food for my snake. The lady working there explained to the family in front of me that she was not allowed to sell them the gerbils they wanted, because they didn‘t want to get the proper sized care. Children crying and all that. But the lady working stayed adamant, saying that they have to take down all animal + cage receipts with the people‘s addresses and that authorities would not only check the stores regularly, but could also do home visits. How happy was I to hear that. Granted, I live in Switzerland, but I just wanted to let you know it‘s not the same all over the world, there‘s hope ☺️

Pet stores should firstly, only be pet SUPPLY stores and not sell actual animals. And secondly, they should only sell the pet products that are actually good, healthy, and adequate for the pets!

I'm 100% sure they are raised for meat. Whether you agree with that or not, plenty of people eat rabbit or feed it to thier pets. My father raises rabbits to feed to his pets and eat so I know how often Craigslist has meat rabbits for sale. They always have wire bottoms. It's actually fine for the chickens to eat the feces since rabbits eat a hay based diet. Chickens can safely eat grasses, which the rabbits feces is nothing but. I studied meat sciences in college and talked about this in forgein country meat production.

I just got a bunny and he was living in a wire cage! I looked up stuff and thats not good so i totally re did it and put a fleece blanket on the bottom so i think thats good now? He loves it! He used to be a show bunny and then the lady who had him kept him in his cage with no toys just food water and hay. Hes so spoiled now and has his own room ❤️ got him toys and hes having a blast. He warmed up to me quickly and its super sweet im so glad i got him.

In Cuba we have a lot of bunnies and the have wired cages I told them that it’s not good they said they know and they feel bad but that’s all they can afford by this summer they will have made them a big and non wired cage and are improvising as much as possible to make a good cage

    • @silencexisxparadise1

Rabbits actually do better on wire flooring if its the correct gauge wire and the holes are 1" x1/2". Sitting in any sort of soiled bedding is the reason they get sore hocks. Plenty of rabbits live in "grow out" cages until sold or butchered. Facts of life are that rabbits are livestock, and there is a big difference between raising for meat/show than raising for "pets". Show rabbits have to be in pristine condition, and go by a standard - Those rabbits are EXPENSIVE. So please dont judge, no reason to "neglect" a $100-$250 rabbit and how would they win shows if they were neglected in the first place?

This hurts my heart! It's nice to hear that some people are just naive and willing to change. NEVER GET ADVICE FROM THE PET STORE ON HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PET!!! I stopped a mom&daughter at my local pet store who had a new guinea pig, and had to tell them everything they were buying was wrong (in a nice way of course). The young girl was very mature and seemed determined to give her new pet a good life. They let me help them pick some stuff out. Informed them on C&C cages too!

I do this to people with betta fish all the time! I caught a petsmart employee telling a woman and her child they could keep a betta fish in the cup they're sold in its entire life and that they never needed to change the water because bettas can survive dirty water. He even told her she could keep it in her car its entire life too! I had to intervene, it was so bad!! Pet shop employees aren't even required to know about proper pet care before they're employed, so a lot only go based on what they hear around and are told, or they guess!

Kalyssa Marenger im so happy I was able to help you! We all make mistakes, the important thing is that we learn from them :) if you’re going to get a tank I would recommend a 40 gallon breeder over a 30 gallon! The minimum is is 450 square inches, and typically 30 gallons are only 360 square inches!!
I’m sure you hamster will be very happy with her new cage!! Good job upgrading! If you want to learn more about hamsters, I have a whole hamster playlist on my channel :)

wire is more santitary .... and if u need to u can get a resting mat ..but if bred well they dont get the sores in the first place the arba states that wire is more sanitary and prevents thees isues.. u gave to use the right kinds ...certain guages of wire or hardware cloth... wire is cleaner

Depends on the tempatures on where you are. Ferrets don't tolerate heat very well. Plus if your buying in the US you're going to get a marshall farms ferret about 90% of the time and they are super fragile and sickly si it probably is t the best idea to keep them outside.

Yeah I have 2 sooo they always look dead. They go into a "coma" and when you pick them up they are flopsy but when you move them around enough they wake up. It is sooo sad I thought they could not be outside. They also need a bigger cage I have A 5 foot high cage for my 2 ferrets. So they need to take care of the ferrets better.

I can bet you I know what they were thinking too.... they probably read that their geckos need a 20 gallon tank and then didn't take into account that that size is only meant for one😑

To the whole confusion about the rabbits, they are most likely meat rabbits kept in wire cages in a shed like building to make clean up easier. The chicken(s) underneath is probably allowed access to the building to keep parasites and insects down since chickens will eat them. This is fairly common on farms even though it's not great.

the abra states that wire is cleaner and more sanitary.... it is actually the proper way to do so.. most pet cages with solid floors are hard to clean, and unsanitary ..... more hock sores and urine scald is caused by pet cages. also grow outs from the same litter are kept together till sold.... in large grow out pens. also hock sores can be gentic expecially common with rex.... and good breeding prevents this issue.... culling any with the bad genes... with good blooodlines its non existent...

@@ASwegoalong I fully agree, keeping bunny crawled in a wired cage not much bigger than it, is abusive and shows nothing more than neglect. How fun it would be to sit on wires for the whole day, not be able to stand, stretch, run or binky - some people should try it, probably would change their opinion immediately.
I bet if it was a pic of a dog or cat kept like that, it would be taken away/owner would be fined immediately.
Excuse of "sanitary" is ridiculous, it's neither comfortable nor healthy and proves that someone has no idea how clean rabbits are, how easily can be potty trained. If someone is so lazy that plans not to clean the litterbox and let bunny sit in their own excrement for the whole day (bunny itself wouldn't do it if it's provided enough room to move), they should never own any pet. As well as children.

They don't care about what kind of condition the enclosure is or the condition of the animal anymore. They just want to pawn it off on somebody else.

The description is so freaking true! People get triggered when others tell them they're taking care of their pets wrong. A good example is (from what I have seen on youtube) that person with the unhealthy vegetarian fennec fox. The animal didn't ASK to be vegetarian and not eat what its meant to because of HER beliefs, nor did it ask for her to take it home. Just because your animal wouldn't make it out in the wild, doesn't mean you're a good owner and you're doing the right things.

    For the rabbit/chicken one...
It's probably an outdoor rabbit cage that's lifted off the ground and the people have free-roaming chickens that are pecking through the rabbit's food they've spilled on the ground below. Most likely the chickens don't live below the rabbits at all. My parents keep their rabbits that way, except they fill the bottoms of the cages with straw or hay as bedding.

I rescued 2 sugar gliders from Kijiji that a mother bought her 10-year-old child to take care of because the daughter really wanted some. The mother was selling them on Kijiji because the daughter had started neglecting the gliders. The two boys came home with me and I started taking care of them to the best of my abilities with an HPW staple diet and fresh fruits and veggies everyday. It was so bad, that I had to give them baths from all of the crust and yuck on their fur.
Unfortunately, one of my males (Sebastian) did not make it. He died from lack of nutrients. My other male, however (Percy) made it through the neglect and he is no longer anorexic and is a healthy weight.
I adopted 2 more sugar gliders (both females) to keep him company from a very nice man who knew exactly what he was doing and raised them from birth because the mother died in labour.
They are now living a great, healthy life with some babies on the way!!
My girlies (Stitch and Artemis) and my male (Percy) love playing and spending time with me and they come with me places in my hoodie.
    Bless their cute little souls!~

I’m glad I worked at a pet store actually KNOWING about pets at one point. I made sure people bought aspen or paper bedding not pine or cedar for their small animals bedding, they tried to get pine for their mice. Someone tried to buy a dwarf hamster to house with their SYRIAN hamster and I made sure they knew that it would for sure kill the dwarf and they need to live ALONEEEE. I helped someone shop for their Syrian hamster that they got from their neighbor who had been keeping them in the 360 crittertrail cage, told them the size cage to get, properly sized water bottle, the right bedding, healthy yummy food, I just ughhhh so many petstore employees don’t know anything and customers don’t do research, too many people just don’t care enough to research proper things animals they own need. I’m glad I helped the people I did do what’s right.

*I apologize for this being so long*
From my experience the problem is that the information that is taught in pet stores is incorrect or outdated, meaning it still follows the older mins and what used to be viewed as suitable.
There are some great pet stores and employees, some employees as an owner themselves can offer better and safer alternatives and some could do research themselves.
Pet stores are generally not a reputable place to get information from.
While researching I would honestly urge you to look at multiple sources and join groups and figure out what will be best and better for the pet's care.
While it would be so much more easier if people did the research or knew where to look. There are good information and also bad information about care, if there are people let's say advising someone to buy a mesh wheel and saying how it's fine etc and there are only a few people advising for a solid wheel. The person may be more swayed to for the mesh wheel instead. Another examples are small tanks and various other examples
I don't think the problem is with people that were not told correct information, or haven't done the research prior.
I think the issue is with people that are not willing to listen or to improve their pet's care because nothing had happened for however or how many pets they have had.
I think the worse is that people that just do not care or is willing to listen.
Every one starts out somewhere, I have had hamsters throughout my years and while they never had the tiniest cage and supplies , the items used were still not suitable.
As an owner I learned that changes can be made, so I made them.
I currently have two syrian hamsters, when I got my first boy in years It was so overwhelming and it's difficult to put your feelings aside, honestly just because I made the wrong choices for the cage etc, it did not mean I didn't care for or love my boy. I did and the members of the group knew this and were understanding.
Being polite , supportive and wanting to help educate/inform people is always better than insulting people.
Not only is it rude but it does not help. I know how bad it makes you feel but I feel like some owners , while having the best intentions can do some more harm than good.
Another thing that made me feel bad personally, was that half the things that were being suggested were not available; and it was hard finding a good food for him.
I also feel like people can judge more by what they see and not what they know.
If they don't have access to what you're lucky to have access to, try and offer diy alternative options.
I think there are bad ways and good ways to get your point/suggestions etc across.

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  6 лет назад

For anyone wanting to own a ferret, you need a multi-level cage for them to climb in, a soft bed or hammock for them to sleep in, a litter box in the corner of the cage (preferably on the lowest level), and a purely carnivorous diet. They prefer to be inside, because they are surprusingly social and loving creatures. They're like puppies that will never grow up. Having them live outside is possible, but definitely not the best environment for them to live healthy lives. They can get fleas and the same illnesses as humans, like a cold or the flu.

i know this is an old video, but incase anyone stumbles upon this, as a general rule ferrets should not be kept outside if you live somewhere that gets hot. ferrets get very sick and can literally die from being in heat (~90+ fahrenheit). also, ferrets fall into a “dead sleep” and almost always look dead when they’re sleeping. :)

11 I think it's more like they bought an animal without realizing how to take care of them and no research. A lot of people buy a pet thinking it will be very cheap and easy to care for and many pets are mistreated and neglected because of that. That's not always the situation and some people don't have the time or money to continue caring for them. But people need to realize they need to research on how to properly care for there pets so they can live a happy life.

When I was younger around 7 or 8 I kept my pet hamster in a critter trail cage. It was one of the bigger ones, but still. I always did my best and made sure it had food & water, bedding, I cleaned it out normally, let it roam around the house in a ball, and took care of it with my allowance money. The hamster lived for 5 years. I just want to remind people that even tho the PARENTS should also take part in helping doing the correct research, many of the time these are just children. They absolutely probably love their animal with all their heart, and simply don't know any better. We should remember to always be kind when educating so they will be more willing to listen :)

Research can be time consuming but if you are taking a living being into your home it is a MUST! We did research and prepared our house and things for my kitten when we got her, and even though she doesn't require anything special like some species/breed of pet, we still looked up how to adjust her with a dog/what kind of toys does she need/what kind of food is the healthiest. Our result is that she's close and happy with our dog, she's only a little overweight (which is our fault, mine especially, since I don't always have time to play with her), and she's overall healthy. But people really don't care and it makes me sad. I'm glad some people were willing to listen, that's always a good sign.
On a slightly different note, I remember we once had four African river frogs in those tiny, horrible cubes. We immediately moved them into a decently larger tank. It might not have been enough, since there went from two to four in it (a friend gave us their pair), but at the very least they could be social and had more room. I think it was a 10 gallon, but I could be very wrong since that was when I was 7 or so. I heard there was a huge controversy over those!

This was fun to watch due to the fact that you're spreading awareness about these animals in hopes people will listen. It will also make people realize to maybe not buy an animal from a big chain petstore where breeding mills are still a thing, but rather to rescue pets off of CL or Kijiji since you're in Canada. I also like how at the end you ask people to kindly inform others of their mistakes instead of yelling. I see this far too often here in the pet community where people call names instead of kindly suggest for better care or to be helpful. And I'm a fan of exposing bad pet ads on CL so i hope you'll do more like this in the future. I'm always on CL daily looking for hamsters and other pets to help, i repost them to rehoming groups and occasionally go and rescue some of them. Maddie also inspired me to make a video like this too tho mine still needs to be edited. Keep up the amazing work of spreading awareness and educating people on better animal welfare. :)

I will never understand why people don't just research on the internet, find multiple sources, talk to long time keepers on forum sites dedicated to animal care, the world is literally at our fingertips and people instead choose to walk into situations like this totally blind and take a store employee at their word. In the end, this employee is just a retail associate that probably does not own the animal you are buying and hasn't owned it for years and years and knows what is best for it. Owning an animal is a big responsibility and for many of these customers they are buying the pet for their child to teach them responsibility and yet ... the parent fails the child and the animal by doing NOTHING to ensure the animal is well taken care of. It baffles me.

I found 2 of my 3 guinea pigs on craigslist. I always feel bad for pets on craigslist because of how uncared for they typically are. If I get a new pet I always try to find one at a shelter or in need of being rescued before I go to a breeder. I recommend doing the same for anyone else planning on getting a pet. I also do all of the research and my friend tends to help me. Anyone that plans on getting a pet, in my opinion, needs to do their research and plan for the long-term commitment that comes with owning most animals. Sadly most people don't and they end up getting abandoned, or on Craigslist, or surrendered. They're not just things you own then give up, they're creatures with feelings and hearts and I feel so bad for the ones that end up in awful homes. Sorry for the rant but I feel like it needed to be said.

Honestly, these videos really do help. I got my leopard gecko from petco a month ago. I went in a couple times a month to check all the reptiles out and get stuff slowly and talk with the employees on gecko care. I bought him and put him in his new 10G tank with calcium sand, super worms, one hide, a heating light and a red light for night, water dish and food dish :( After coming across a youtube video I realized i was doing it so wrong.
Now hes in a 20g long (i know its not the greatest or bigger but definitely better) with an under tank heater and ceramic heater, ceramic tile for substrate, a hot hide a cold hide and a moist hide, calcium, and calcium and d3, vitamins, mealworms and dubia roaches. Pet stores are TERRIBLE. I learned my lesson the expensive way. I wish I knew to check youtube, I will share so people can also know before buying :)

It's so sad that people take animals as toys and treat them so badly. I wish they could imagine what it would be like to be brought up that way.

I like how people make a big fuss over abuse to pretty much any animal, and then don’t fricken care when a horse is getting abused.

My sister was 16, and wanted a hamster so bad. She bought one, and bought one with the petco workers told her to do. She got two Syrian male hamsters(the petco worker said they are social animals and needed a companion which is 10000% false.) the pet store lady then said one critter trail(super small cage) will work for the both of them, along with one 4 in wheel. Unfortunately one of them died because my sister didn’t know your not supposed to play with them for about 3 days. The wet tail disease spread to the other one, Gibby. Once he got sick too my sister pretty much abandoned him to die bc she thought he had no hope. I took him in and raised him to health. At that time I was 12 and didn’t know how to care for a hamster but did my research, and he was better! I saved my a dollar a week allowance to buy him a 12 in wheel, and made him an extension bin cage to his critter trail! I loved him so much and he was so much happier in his cage with my care. Unfortunately, the bin cage did not have a top, but he could not climb out. I have 4 cats that were normally super strictly out of my room for the reason of Gibby being in a topless cage. One night I was super sick that I couldn’t even do a night routine(brush teeth, put pjs on ect) so I just went in my bed and went to sleep. And while I was sleeping my dad thought it was hot in my room so he opened my door with out me knowing. And my cat got to gibby 😞 I tried so hard with my dollar-a-week allowance to take care of him properly. I’ll never forget gibby. When I had him my mom realized how good with animals I was. My whole life she never let me have a pet, but now, I could honestly bring home any rodent or reptile, and she’ll gladly let me keep it. As of right now, I’m 15, and have my 3 rats, I have a job to support then and get them proper cage equipment and a hue cage! Ever since 1st grade I wanted rats but my mom always said “I don’t want you to kill them to you can have one once you move out.” And now here I am. Thank you Gibby. Rest In Peace my baby❤️❤️

I adopted my dear Pandora (a crested gecko) from Craigslist. Thankfully it wasn't a situation of neglect, instead it was a situation of getting a pet but losing interest. Instead of throwing her out or letting her rot, they kept taking care of her until we bought her. She's skittish since she wasn't handled much, but she's already warming up to me slightly. I'm glad it wasn't worse. Tonight we're getting her ledges so she can relax on the walls.
These ads make me want to vomit. I mean, I'm glad it's sometimes just unintended ignorance, but those people who are up on their high horses need to drop off it HARD. These are living creatures, with pain receptors, emotions, and souls. If you wouldn't do it to a human child, don't do it to any animal (self defense is a different story but you know what I mean).

Once you think about it, if all these people were most likely in Canada or north America, imagine how many people are doing this to animals all over the world 😫

i owned ferrets for quite a while. they're built to handle colder climates; if they get hot they're VERY susceptible to heat stroke, similar to guinea pigs (i think, it's been a while since i had guinea pigs). Ferrets really shouldn't be kept in temperatures higher than 75-78 F for longer than an hour or two.
Also, I agree the cage is dirty, and it needs to be MUCH bigger. Ferrets naturally love to roam, run, play, and burrow. Their cages should have plenty of space for all of that, unless the owner takes them out for play time for at least a handful of hours a day--if not more. Ferrets take up a HUGE amount of time in daily life, and most people--even if they've done their research--aren't aware of or prepared for the sheer volume of time ferrets need.
    Thanks for the cool video!

I used to have a rabbit and we kept him in a pet store cage (which I know isn’t right now), but he was pretty much out of it all day other than sleeping. Well like a year and a half ago I adopted a senior guinea pig and made him a C&C cage with fleece and it was 4x9 it took up a whole room but it was worth it he was so happy. Sadly he passed away because of being old but we rescued him and he was thriving.

My hamster Rosy was in a critter trail thing for like a week before she nearly lost a leg to it (she was fine, we took her to the vet, nothing got hurt) after that she was upgraded to a 30(i think) gallon long tank. She spent the rest of her 3-4 years in there and earned herself the nickname Hammy Houdini because she was the worlds craziest escape artist and SOMEHOW managed to get out of a tank that had weights on the lid, under the stove, and into our neighbors bathtub. I COULDN'T MAKE THIS UP I PROMISE. She ended up dying from an eye infection around christmas years ago.

Emma, for the black dwarf hamster advertisement. The reason there was no food bowl or bedding in the picture is if you advertise something in a photo you have to note that as being sold in the product also.

I cried throughout the whole video. How awful! Can't people feel the pain of these lovely creatures being treated so dreadfully? I can't understand why people don't do a thorough research before adopting an animal. They are completely dependent on an understanding and kind owner to live a happy life (specially those species that have been taken away from their natural wild environment )

I have a friend who doesn't listen to my advice on taking care of his leopard gecko, and it annoys me so much. He doesn't make any physical contact with his gecko, and he has it in his room, but doesn't go anywhere near the tank ever, and doesn't put have anything in his setup, but a food and water bowl, a heat lamp, and a couple of rocks for it:( I don't wanna get into crazy detail bc i can go on and on. But also his brother is housing 3 guinea pigs in about a 4-5 sqaure feet cage, yes he does take them out their cage often, but that is no excuse for such limited space. It annoys me A LOT when i go to their house, and see that they still don't take my advice.

My brother had a pet dwarf bunny (male) unfortunately it ran away from the life it had when my dad went to feed it... we did keep it in the shed during winter so it would not freeze because it gets pretty cold... we took proper care of it and everything... we just left it on the side porch in its own cage during the summer/spring/some of fall and it had a great life... it just ran away into the woods and my dad could not find him anymore... I'm guessing that a coyote might have gotten to it by now... we eventually got another one but it died from natural causes...
My mom once took care of a kitten who was found in someone's backyard and the person who found it abandoned had to get surgery on her hand so my mom took it in... took care of it... until it died only about a week old... the first time it was able to see me was its last but it had died from natural causes...
I once had a white baney chick who I named Fluffy... I didn't know Fluffy's gender and my dad told me that Fluffy was dead because the neighbors' dogs murdered it...
We took proper care of them all
I even have a male pomeranian dog named Toby to this day who was left outside in bad weather and only fed scraps before I had found him...My dad picked him up off the streets and we took him home took care of him until we found his owner... well turns out we already knew the owner and they said we could keep him... I couldn't even ask for a different dog instead of Toby...
If I could I would rescue as many pets as I possibly could and give them the life they deserve...

Ugh, I hate it when people say "well the pet store told me to do it". A lot of the people there sont actually know the proper care for the animals. Do actuall research on the animal before you commit to buying it. They aren't toys, they arent objects, they are living things that need proper care to stay happy and healthy. If you cant do that, don't get a pet.

Watching these kinds of videos makes me feel like a better person lol. My mini rex is free roam, but does spend about 10 hrs a day in a cage when I work. However, that cage is 5ft by 3 ft and 2 stories tall. So she has plenty of room to run around with toys and houses to play in. :)
