THIS IS Like Vanilla OR Chocolate Body type; weight; coordination Lots of variables. Which is less maintenance, most productive, best warranty, best dealer. How about tires Width, Diameter, tread design bias-ply vs radial vs tweel shorts vs longs vs ticks 😨 Bottom Line: you'll need both. That's why they are Professionals Off Subject: any Kubota dealers near you?
I'm 64 years old and still prefer a stand-on. Easier to get on and off, easier to control just using my hands instead of arms. Easier when mowing under tree limbs - no roll bar and I can get lower squatting/ducking down than I can when I lean over on my Skag Cheetah. I'm not a pro, just a homeowner that mows a few acres.
You pretty much nailed it. Stander is much more versatile. Almost nothing they can't do. But for leaf removal and big fairly flat wide open spaces a zero turn is definitely the way to go. I rolled a 60" Dixie Chopper with all of the safety switches off straight backwards and was looking up at the bottom of the deck with the blades on at full throttle. Scariest moment of my life. No more taking a zero turn on hills for me.
I cut lawns by myself as a side hussle business with a noncommercial Husquvarna 46 zero turn doing residential work only. I have never used a Stander mower and dont want to finance any brand of super expensive equipment $5000 plus). I personnally would prefer my sit down zero turn simply to save my legs for the inevitable string trimming as well as blowing time in yards. Keep up the great lawn videos..., your a natural!
This comment. I agree 100% with this statement. The Stander is perfect for the smaller properties, or groups of them. Granny yards and so forth. The Zero is better for those open expanses where you're going to be mowing for awhile, such as large church lawns or farm properties.
So having just cut several times with my new Wright Stander, I am finally able to angle cut my front yard because the front to back distance is so short on the stander. I can turn around on a dime and am now able to do so much more with this mower in tight spaces than before. It's amazing. Thanks Brian....
I think that both are must haves in our industry. If you're working on both residential and commercial. It just makes sense to have both. Kind of like having a short bush trimmer vs a pole bush trimmer. Depending on the job it just depends on the right tool for the job.
Both have their place for me...I love stand-ons for smaller properties or areas where we aren’t mowing for more than a few minutes, but the zero-turns shine on larger properties (we mow a couple that are 20+ acres).
Hey Brian as always great video. I've been using a 60 zero turn. Many of my properties are several acres. Yesterday I had the opportunity to demo a Ferris 52 stander and fell in love. So much more nimble and honestly the bigger properties I got finished just as fast. A little tricky at first. I'm also 53 and have a bad knee and mowed some very rough property's. After adjusting the platform and lowering the air pressure on the tires it rode great. It was much better on my back. I pulled a 12 hr day and wasn't any more tired than normal. I think it would make sense to have one of each but I have a feeling I'll use the stander more.
I've been running a lawncare and landscaping company for 8 years now and we started with a residential sit down Murray for 1,000 new. It lasted all of half my first season. Next was a residential zero turn John Deer and residential Husqvarna. Fast forward 8 years. Back hoes, track loaders and half a million in equipment. We have all stand on Ferris mowers on 1 truck. 36. Z1x stander, 48 Z2x stander, 72 Z3x stander. 2nd truck is the second way just with scag and a few differences in deck sizes. At the shop we keep 2 sit down Exmark mowers as back up and the landscaping crews use them on jobs at times. We also keep 1 extra 36 inch ferris Stand on mower as a back up, 30 inch Exmark push and a Kobalt electric push. Stand on mowers increased production and we cut on average 3 to 5 more yards a day using stand on mowers vs sit downs, happier employees, employee retention, because you can cut me 3 to 5 more yards using standers vs sit down mowers means I can pay crew leaders significantly more money with a monthly bonus if they don't call out and don't get complaints. They are less fatigued and every employee I have prefers a stand on mower over a sit down mower unless it's leaf season because they will use the sit down mowers like little bull dozers and push the leaf piles to the road for pick up. This is not just my opinion this is mine and 2 crew leaders and 2 others that run mowers. 5 votes for stand on mowers here.
I love the standard. In love with the scag vride with that advantage deck. I am small and do about 30 accounts. Mostly residential with a few 2 acre properties. I love the compact size which saves space on the trailer and I can save time mowing ditches versus a sit down. Also there is a company that makes a vacuum bagging system for stand-ons. Great video
I have never had a set down z turn. My stand on Deere 636m is my first commercial mower. Lawncare is a side hustle for me but I made my choice due to being 53 when I bought. Getting in and off ease was the biggest reason for my choice of a stand on and space on my 5x10 trailer. Thanks for the video Randy
Have always used zero turns, but have developed sciatic nerve issues in the last year or so and sitting on a zero turn for more than a few hours a day now really takes a toll on my back and leg, so stand on next for me... but will still keep one zero turn as backup
Stand on all day. Efficiency, productivity, visibility and better ergonomics. Space Savin is nice but I’ve found stand on much more versatile. I run jd quick traks with tweels on all. Each trailer has 60” zero, 52” stander 48” walk. Stander is used on 95 percent of all routes but I feel zero and walk still have their place. Thanks great vid!!
I too have always had the concern of not having capabilities of "feathering deck" say flat ground to top of slope goin in... ( insert bogg down "scalp" sound here..) It's an UUUUUUUUUUUGE decision! You always do over & above to help her fellow "Yawd-Mon" thank you sir for all the effort & EXTRA work you put into vlogging!
Well said. I think it makes sense to have both (if possible) so you can choose the most productive choice for the job. I thinks it's time they add fast hydraulic deck lifts on both as an option, thumb or foot switch for up and float down.
We have a Kubota with a hydraulic deck, we hate it. It's just another expensive repair and throughout the day the deck will start to get lower. Chains are the way to go until someone gets hydraulics right.
I think you did a great comparison. I’ve been mowing for 18 plus years, starting with the exmark turf ranger then to the lazers, I really never paid much attention to the stand ons before but after seeing you demo them it might be something to look at adding in the future.
I wrestled with this question when I bought my cheetah n v ride 2. The answer for me was both, but if you’re not in the position I would say a 52” stander is a good machine to tackle a lot of properties. Anything with many obstacles stander is the way to go, anything wide open 1/2” n up ztr! Like always nothing over 1100lbs too. Lightweight is the future of mowers.
Sit down. I feel more confident on a sit down. I feel like everyone piggybacks off of the "picking up trash'" Comment. How many times per yard do you actually pick up trash? My biggest reason, I have horrible knees.
if you have a grab stick, you don't even have to get off of the mower. on trashier properties i'll carry it with me, but i'm thinking about rigging up a mount to carry it on my rider all the time. even on clean yards, you'll sometimes encounter a piece of trash or two you don't want to run over.
kodiak wild Exactly. I have a trash grabber too but I hardly ever use it because I don't come across rubbish that much and if I do its only the odd bit on a commercial property or sharehouse that I'm happy to just get off for and kick out of the way. If your that lazy that you don't want to get off your mower once or twice on a property on the odd occasion there's something wrong lol ;D
King David 314 You can do that too which yes I will do if not before starting anything at least while trimming but most of my places are pretty clean so anything that's on the lawn will have just been blown there by the wind or whatever.
Stand on. I love being able to see all the way around me. I had a tough decision of what to get because this was my first mower but I love everything about my stander. I can't say anything bad about a sit down because I have never use one.
Brian I demoed them both and see a place from them both in the lawn industry. I was looking to cut my own property and maybe a few accounts. The stander felt less natural to a beginner like me. I was worried about hills and inclines because a cut a few on my own property and my neighbors. I found out its all about the width of the machine and tires. Once I added bigger and wider tires it handles hills and inclines like a stander with a seat lol. I enjoy cutting much more and not scared to be riding those hills and inclines. Thanks for all you do for us. Still liking that Ferris stander thou😀
Great video Brian , I have one each , I’m on my second toro grandstand 2800 hrs on the first . I use the stander mostly . Great for ditches and slopes. Your right. It’s about preference. And definitely need a good bagging system for fall.so the zero turn is great for that . The grandstand has come out with a full bagging system. That’s all I know. This is a great industry and I think guys like you are helping make it a respected and professional industry. Keep it up.
I got my own lawn care company and work for one. I have a 42 inch cub cadet zero turn I’m only two years in. And the company I work for had two Wright standers a 36 and 52. As a newer lawn care guy for me the 42 cub zero was way easier to learn. The stander definitely took some time to feel comfortable with but once I got the hang of it I fell in love. I’m saving for a 52 Bradley stander now
Stand on for me, firstly because I need a 36inch for my back yards, you have better vision for what’s ahead, more compact for room in the trailer, you don’t have to constantly get up when picking up trash, or pulling the chute up when entering a tight space, also dust doesn’t go right in your face. Zero turn would be my choice if I had primarily huge commercial properties, and steep inclines they are the best.
I agree with everything you said in this video. I have been in lawn business for 15 years and always said I would never use a stander, well this spring I decided to get a Exmark Vantage because I’m a Exmark fan lol, because of some small back yards I have picked up over the winter. Since getting that machine and running it, I have fell in love with it and have let my Lazer Z set on trailer. So much quicker and comfortable on and off machine and trash cleanup. I will be trading my Lazer in on a Vantage with a 60” deck real soon. The Vantage I recently purchased was a 48” deck. I will eventually only have one sit down mower and that will be my 72” deck for large properties.
IMO you hit the most important pros for the Zero Turns and that's the Vac systems and the feathering of the deck !! And my last comment is why are you never wearing shorts mowing on a zero turn ??? LOL I never have a problem getting grass all over me...Yeah if the wind is blowing a certain way it can come out of discharge and come back to the rider but I will then just mow a different direction. Im in NY and im in shorts as soon as the temps break 70 degrees !! Screw wearing jeans or long pants in 80 90 degree heat !! Great Job on all the Demos Brian I really appreciate your channel and the content you put out !!
Wow we just got our first real heat wave up here in NY 90 plus degrees with humidity and you wont see me working past 2 o clock !! And that will be after changing my shirt and underwear at least once !!
@@kevinboo2000 lol,,, 90+,,, too funny, try 100-1115 range with high humidity here in tx.. some summers, fewer 100+ days, some summers a lot more, it's a crap shoot, not to mention all the bugs and mosquitoes. 9-10am is already 90+, doesn't get back to 90 and lil below til midnight-1am. weather in ny is a dream, only in summer.
I think that it's good to use both. I have both and I find that the sit down hurts my lower back after a few hours and stand on gives relief on your back but stress on the legs and hands after a while . I've learned alternating mowers works best. I will cut a few yards sitting and then switch back .
I havent been able to try a stander yet. However, most of the technology you were referring to that is new on the standers, is also available on the zero turns from the same manufacturer. (Velocity deck, 37 hp Vanguard, oilguard, etc) As far as comfort goes. YOU NEED TO DEMO A FERRIS 3200 SERIES ZERO TURN. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Especially since you have recently been able to demo the standon equivalent from them.
I would like to try a stander but I'm a solo operator, I can rest my body while mowing with the zero turn, to be able to trim and blow all day...I'm in my mid 50s and diabetic....95% of my properties are an acre and up....that's why it's hard for me to commit to a stander....actually bought a new bobcat zero turn 3 weeks ago
The Ferris Z3X 72 is surprisingly comfortable ride. You might want to demo one. With your diabetes, the exercise for your legs would be good for you, and the suspension platform takes most of the shock out of your knees. Cut quality is on-par (if not better) than your Bobcat.
I enjoy the walk behinds just because I'm a tall guy and can move quickly. But zero turn hands down for speed, the bagger on our gravely proturn works like a dream as well, 950hrs going strong. 48in deck will get anywhere you need with a zero turn, and that's even with a bagger on the back. This being said I'm fairly biased as I haven't used stand on mowers at all. But I like sitting.
They’re convincing me too! All depends. There honestly a budget for all of them. Everything available today is between 7.5-14 for both ztr or stand on.
I love the pro stance from gravely... Love the speed of sit down zero turn, but I feel the stand on can get closer to objects and handles the hill and slopes without the sliding. Plus I feel like you look cooler on a stand on.
I had a sit down exmark for a couple years.... now have a Ferris Z2 and I will NEVER go back to sit down! Sit down all the way You see what you are mowing a lot better, I don’t have any more back pain since switching to stand on Getting up and picking up twigs and trash is so much easier on a stand on then sitting down Less weight on your trailer with stand on Can’t recommend a stander enough Brian!
Depends on how much you mow, smaller residential lots stand on all day, but for the bigger 1 acre lots sit down, I just finished demoing the z3x 72” but didn’t like how bouncing it got on my maintenance lots, I’m going to look at the hustler hyperdrive next, but you need 1 of each, I have both and each have its purpose
I have been landscaping for 7 years and have used standers since day 1. Started with a 52" wright stander, then when that blew up the company bought a 61" wright zk, this machine was 100% worth the price tag. We have many larger lawns and it shreds through them. We have always had the 36" walk behind in thetrailer, which is a necessity on 3 jobs, unfortunately. Once the company got big enough to add a third mower to the trailer the decision was a no brainer, stander it was. We got the 52" Wright intensity. (Would have gotten the X but the dealer did not have any, and we needed it that day, lesson learned; dont rush, and always have a backup mower) the intensity is just too light, so the traction on hills is to be desired. (Other than that it is a fantastic mower) standers are the only way to go, in my opinion. They are easier on the back, way more compact, and way more maneuverable. The demos and borrowing of riders that I have used is just not worth the extra space. I also must h prefer the controls of the weight to the Toro, they are much more intuitive, in my opinion, but I started on Wrights, so it might just be my bias.
I'm a homeowner and there are no homeowner stand-on machines; they are all commercial and cost too much for what I do. Plus, I am chill'n on my ZT and saving my legs for cycling. I got the ZT so that I no longer have to stand and push a mower. I've done that since 1997. Sitting and chill'n while cutting the lawn is a Big Pro for me.
I too have lower back problems. Used stand on since 2005. I have to see a chiropractor after a jarring day on a sit-down. My son stated out with stand up. He wanted to demo sit down. After one lawn, he hated the sit down
I love The Gravely ProStance because I feeling like you can get under things without sitting down plus I feel like the Pro Stance would better your body pain after a long period of time compared to a zero turn.
2 herniated discs in my back id rather stand than sit. My first ztr killed my back from the bumps. The vantage i got now keeps my back in line and is fun to drive
I've been cutting grass for 11 years, I'm 32, back in 2015 I had a herniated disc, by the end of the season, (4 month recovery no surgery) I have only used zero turns, and walk behind, zero turn makes the job faster, I've never tried the stander mower, but would love to, zero turn keeps making my back hurt again.
I started my business when I was 13 in my neighborhood and I have used a 22 inch push mower my whole life. Yes, I only had 3 or 4 accounts back then, but, now that I’m 15, my business has snow balled. I cut about 18-20 yards a week... still with a 22 inch push mower. So I’m walking the whole time, and I just get tired too fast. So, I think I will have say a zero turn is what I will be getting soon. I did demo a couple standers and a couple zero turns and I like the zero turns a bit better.
Props to you man! I also started when I was 13 and am 15 now. I started with a push mower but I whimped out and bought a used walk behind (best investment ever) i wish you luck in your search as I am right there with you in finding what mower is right for you!
I 100% agree with Lucas, a walk behind is where it’s gonna be at for you. The eX-Mark Turf Tracer is really hard to beat, they are awesome on hills. I like the Scag Pro V because of the handlebar controls vs the pistol grip controls, but the Scag doesn’t hold a ditch line or hill like the Turf Tracer does. Plus you can get a stand on attachment for them for your bigger yards, which just lifts out of the way when you need to walk it instead of ride it.
Stand on! Much easier on the body! Gravely pro stance gives a deck feather on the platform! Cut on a zero turn for 5 years tried the stand on and love it
yep, sitters are heavier, but they're more comfortable for a long day. and i'm pretty good at avoiding turf damage ( aside from weeds ). again, loving that trailer ( the truck too ).
Great video Brian you hit about every pro and con spot on. I’m a home owner with a large property to cut is why I use a exmark zero turn. But if I was a lawn business owner I would have stand in units for sure. The top 3 advantages I see from all stand on owners is productivity ( easy to get in and off for trash or limb pickup) stability (after to lean your weight on steep inclines) and size (able to fit more equipment on the trailer). I wander if any company’s would let you demo a stander with a dedicated mulch kit this fall and see how it does with leaf cleanup
I like the zero turn for my 5 acre yard. The speed is nice and the option to add on a bagging system is key. Ferris/Simplicity for their suspension system and my old back. LOL
I think to put it this way I certainly love mowing my lawn and neighbors lawns. I usually use my Scag Cheetah 72 and my employees use the Scag V Ride 2 61 and Scag V Ride 48. I even had a vision I was on the Dixie Chopper Xcaliber 74 (if Dixie was still around though). Many times my employees and I use the Exmark and Toro 30 mowers for the smaller lawns and we do walk a lot. I think for me If I have to do the bigger parts on my lawn or neighbors lawns thats usually good for the Cheetah 72 I let my employees mow the parts that aren't too big. I usually don't mow the slopes with the Cheetah that I leave it to my employees on the V Ride and V Ride 2. Great video Brian.
I just bought my first zero turn the other day and love it to bits! I think the idea of a stand on would be interesting but they are quite rare here in Australia and very expensive even for a 36" so I'm yet to try one. Yes you have the convenience of picking stuff up easily I guess as many people have mentioned but on a big property with virtually no rubbish at all I can't see too much of a point over sit downs. I really like my current mower because it has a very nice seat and I already spend most of my time standing up so being able to sit down is something I love. Not sure what you meant with the shorts on stander vs sit down comment though, I wear shorts 99% of the time when I'm working whether it's summer, winter or anywhere in between and don't really have any troubles. Maybe its just that I'm used to stuff being flung at my legs while trimming lol
I have always used sit on... and want to try stand on but don’t want to because my buddy almost lost his finger on a stand on when stuck under a tree But stand ons are more compact and more visible
Bought a stand on (V-Ride 48 deck) to replace a tractor, I know, not a zero turn, for a lot size of approximately 3/4 acre with trees, stone edging and plants along the edge of the lawn. Property slopes about 10 feet toward one side and the stability on slopes, both up and down and across is excellent. For me the natural hand position eliminates shoulder movement as I have issues with both shoulders. Visibility is excellent as you can see all 4 corners of the unit and once you get accustomed to the way the front wheels swivel you can get around obstacles easily. First time out drove the 48 inch deck machine through a 50 inch gate opening without ever touching the posts, although I did reduce speed but did not reduce to a crawl. What took 90 minutes now is done in 60 with far less hand edge trimming. Much easier on the body than sitting down and bouncing around. A neighbor with a Wright sit on can not navigate areas that I can but his is a 52 inch deck. Easy on and off to pick up debris is also a handy feature. Run the tires a few pounds lower than recommended and have never torn up the turf, even when the ground is soft.
Stand on all the way!! My dad and I have a Z2 and 2 Z3x’s And we both love them. The Z2 is a 54 in deck which is good for more residentials and then the Z3x is a 61 in deck. With both Z3’s we cover a lot more ground when we are mowing our big commercial properties. Along with just the ride quality of the Z3 is outstanding. The stand on’s are just a whole lot more efficient when it comes to saving time and energy but still having good quality of work.
HI Brian, zero turn for me . Why, I'm an older guy and need to sit because my knees couldn't stand standing all day. Thank you for doing these video's and yes being in a back lot looks better than in a place where you are working sometimes. :)
Hey Brian! Great video as always man. I personally prefer a sit on z-turn. Prefer the sit down because you can be less fatigue at the end of the day and they are much better on hills. Also since I can get the bigger engines that's a huge plus. And since the decks come from anywhere from 32' to 109' their is a deck for every application. One of the down sides though is visibility. But keep up the great work brother, God bless ya!!
I’ve never driven a stand on, and personally I would probably choose it over sit on if I could. I mow several family owned lots and they get trash all the time, along with plenty of ruts. It’s a much more work getting on and off with my sit on, and I have to do it constantly to pick up chunks of metal. I also normally lose the feeling in my legs after mowing from all the bumps, not to mention the weird feeling of slapping your sweat soaked shirt back onto that lawn mower. I lack the ability to pick up trash quickly, the ability to let my legs help absorb the shock from bumps, and the ability to let my back vent and in turn sweat less. I would suggest that if your body can handle standing for 10 acres of mowing, to go with a stand on, we should have gotten one to begin with.
I have a Grandstand from Toro. I have taken on hills and slopes in a crazy manner. One hill I had to get off the back in order keep the front wheels on the ground when I got to the top. I take on more steeper slopes with my stander rather than the zero turn that I have. If I get a second unit I will get a stander. I have an accelerator catcher for the stander, I can stop, dump, start in about 1 minute. I have a bagger for my zero turn and they work great too. The only problem with either system, I use yard bags because the city where I live pick up yard waste. Loading the bags is a hassle, for the most part. I am working out the kinks in those situations. With that said I am Toro all the way!
It’s hard to not have both for all the reasons you mentioned. A mechanic doesn’t have just one wrench. We bought a scag tiger cat II last year and trying to decide what stander we are buying this year. Love our Scag but that Ferris is looking pretty good.
stand on mower i feel is the best of both worlds. You get the agility of a walk behind and light footprint, but you get the zero turn comfort and stability .....Stand on is the best of both
This should be titled "Sit-Down vs Stand-On Mowers". Zero-turn just means that you can control each wheel individually so that the turning radius is effectively zero, allowing the mower to turn within its own footprint, and doesn't have anything to do with whether the mower is a sit-down, stand-on, or walk-behind, all of which are available in zero-turn configurations.
It depends, if you are mowing a lot of commercial property where there would be trash and/or it’s a small quick yard I would go with a stand on mower. If you mow a lot of lots and large yards go with sit down mowers. Me personally I use a sit down, because I mow a lot of lots and large yards.
I use a Scag Pro V with the velki. It ain’t brand new but it cuts great and the lower center of gravity and ride height is so much better for mowing under trees, and walking it on steep terrain is easy. Plus, it’s got the handlebar controls which I prefer way over the pistol grips on the turf tracer or swz. Too bad Scag and eX-Mark now only use pistol grips(other than the swzt). I see tendinitis in my future. Or I will switch to a zero turn.
Kind of a thought, i run a 36” wb, 36” stand on, and 48” ztr. That work perfectly for my accounts. But i run stand on unit on about 75% of them. Due to small gates, smaller yards, or lots of obstacles. It’s actually more maneuverable thrn my wb. But the purchase of the stand on opened up alot more opportunities due to less time on properties then with the wb. They all have their places
I have not seen a single stand on mower for sale in ireland, but to me they look uncomfortable(i have a bad knee)so a sit down is the choice.i have a husqvarna centre steer.
As always great vids, I have 1 Wright 36 idensity and 1 52 Wright stander x. Visibility and space a must 4 me. And most importantly like you mentioned, jumping off to pick up trash or jumping off if you come across any near accidents.
Over 50 years old. While I would love a stander for smaller footprint and better hill control, my knees cannot take it all day. I have both but sit-down is my main work horse.
I have been in business for quite some time now I have learned that Zero Turns are much better for rough hilly and big acreage properties but you got to go where the money's at smaller properties with sod and irrigation you leave less of a footprint with a lighter weight machine they both have their advantages
Looking at demoing a stand on this spring. I think the head clearance around trees will be a huge difference from our sit down zero turns. We’ve run John Deere Z-Tracs for years but we’re going to demo the scag this spring.
Stand on ALL THE WAY!!!!!! I have a gravely stand on and a gravely zero turn. Both are commercial and when I want something stripped I use my stand on. I love the Gravley stand on!!!! Especially when I’m constantly mowing my costumers yards.
I fractured my hip in 2 places in a motorcycle accident in 2011 Bouncing around on a zero turn isn't an option. Looked at the stand up models but went with a pull type behind my atv. About 1/3 of the cost and does a great job.
Try ferris, I have the isx800 with air ride seat and it's smooth as silk, I have 2 acres, the first half acre was sodded and is fairly smooth, the rest was just what ever grew in and its bumpy, I have bad back and neck, with zero probs go check one out
I prefer the stand on. I’ve never used a sit down mower but I like the compact concept, line of sight, and like you said with the updated technology......AND.....I feel that when people see you on a stand on mower, they’re in amazement. The look of being on a stand on mower is a plus and I kind of feel like they stripe better than a sit down.
kevinboo2000 I honestly can’t answer that one lol. I guess it’s not so much a preference anymore, but now I’m set in my “Stand on” ways lol. I have sat on one if that counts.
Zero turn all day long for me. I've taken my zero turn on hills that I couldn't take the stander because it starts fish tailing. Its easier for me to lift up the deck with my foot when going up a bump so it doesn't scalp on the zero turn than it is on the stander, at least the stander I was using. I feel more stable sitting down going 10mph on a lawn than I do hanging on the back of a machine. I like them both tho and the stander is great on small subdivision lawns where you have to turn around a lot imo.
Beyond Compare Lawn Care lifting the deck and not scalping is the one point I was going to say 👍 it's definitely alot easier feathering the deck with your foot than going to grab the deck handle with your hand
Beyond Compare Lawn Care They arent made for hills. You're risking it by taking it on hills brother be careful out there. Turf Tracers are the best hill mower there is
I like sit down zero turn because I’m use to a sit down zero turn more than a stand on. I learned how to use a zero turn first and I feel I have better control. I also have knee issues from college lacrosse so I can’t stand on a machine for more than an hr especially if I’m not moving around.
Everyone should have both options. You can mulch or side discharge during the summer but spring and fall our clients require collection. I refer bagging systems as a vacuum to keep properties cleaner. Stand-Ons are great for many reasons. Number one is getting on and off to pick up trash is so much faster, and they have better visibility and tighter turning control. But for all the reasons you mentioned the rider/vac system has a longer season of use. We will use the rider without the vac system impeller and tube to side discharge but almost never take the catcher off.
I actually bought a 20+ year old bobcat ztr this year as my first start up mower, I do have issues with really tight spaces I see the advantage of having both.
Exactly what you said bud. Stand on for your more residential property's and the ride on for your bigger open property's, all around efficiency and productivity in a residential areas, picking up garbage, sticks, toys, dog runs, gutters, and emptying the side grass catcher, would have to be the stand on, for acres of land or bigger properties where you can let the grass fly and run full speed, the rider. Winner to me stand on.
standers are awesome but test a wright stander/ john deere ( wright builds standers for JD ). standers have a lot more versatile in my opinion since its better on your body and yard, are more compact so you can have more on a trailer and lighter.
More nimble, easier on and off, Safety on hills and ditches (able to get away from mower if a problem) That’s a Biggy. for Me easier around trees. You can squat down to go under branches A sit down u are limited to how much u can lean to ur side.
I like my stand-on. The Staris is my first commercial mower I purchased, however I demoed a few sit downs. I don’t like having to keep getting up and my visibility is way better. Also living in Michigan, I feel safer riding slopes over sitting.
Just got a Wright ZK 52” and if you are cutting 5 acres or less this is the way to go. Less fatigue on the back when you go over bumps, better turning around ability so actually I was able to get more jobs done faster with a smaller deck. My other mower was a Exmark 60” sit down and I would take the ZK over it any day.
I went with the standards cause they are compact and can ride around and trim, blowoff but the rider is good too cause I mow some stuff with rider I won’t with a standard
You guys know my thoughts! What’s yours? Stand On or Zero Turn?! Comment below!
Brian's Lawn Maintenance neither. Walk Behind all the way.
Made my pick on the gravely 52 pro stance. Just waiting for fleet discount and trailer 👍🏼 already have clients asking me to do their lawns 🙌🏼
Stand on. I think they are way faster, they are more maneuverable, You can see in front of you way better , And they take up less space
If it can't be done with a z mower use a walkbehind
THIS IS Like Vanilla OR Chocolate
Body type; weight; coordination
Lots of variables. Which is less maintenance, most productive, best warranty, best dealer.
How about tires
Width, Diameter, tread design
bias-ply vs radial vs tweel
shorts vs longs vs ticks 😨
Bottom Line: you'll need both.
That's why they are Professionals

any Kubota dealers near you?
Holy fuck BRO 😳
Woah
I cut lawns by myself as a side hussle business with a noncommercial Husquvarna 46 zero turn doing residential work only. I have never used a Stander mower and dont want to finance any brand of super expensive equipment $5000 plus). I personnally would prefer my sit down zero turn simply to save my legs for the inevitable string trimming as well as blowing time in yards. Keep up the great lawn videos..., your a natural!
But you can get commercial equipment that will last you longer for the same price of a top of the line residential sit down 0 turn
Zeroturn for large properties and Stander for smaller properties. Wouldn't hurt to have one of each. Each mower designated for specific properties.
This comment. I agree 100% with this statement. The Stander is perfect for the smaller properties, or groups of them. Granny yards and so forth. The Zero is better for those open expanses where you're going to be mowing for awhile, such as large church lawns or farm properties.
Wardor 1992 every mower has its place 👌🏼
Yeah I prefer the standers, they can be just as fast and similar deck sizes.
Thanks for the video
Randy
Mr. C's Lawncare Awesome pal
( insert bogg down "scalp" sound here..)
It's an UUUUUUUUUUUGE decision!
You always do over & above to help her fellow "Yawd-Mon" thank you sir for all the effort & EXTRA work you put into vlogging!
Well said. I think it makes sense to have both (if possible) so you can choose the most productive choice for the job. I thinks it's time they add fast hydraulic deck lifts on both as an option, thumb or foot switch for up and float down.
my old gravely z has a hydraulic deck lift. never even saw it before i bought it. the feature is brilliant.
John Deere has hydraulic lift decks
Finally found it done close to right ruclips.net/video/C4QqXCFn_i8/видео.html
G4 Outdoors I recon my properties to make sure that I pick up all trash & debris before I mow.
kodiak wild Exactly.
JWN Lawn Care why not walk your properties & pick up trash b4 mowing? Idky that's so hard.
Ground Hog I feel ya pal 100%
I wear a hoodie and jeans like year around even in August lol. I dunno.
Shorts are a must during the summer here in Florida
I think that it's good to use both. I have both and I find that the sit down hurts my lower back after a few hours and stand on gives relief on your back but stress on the legs and hands after a while . I've learned alternating mowers works best. I will cut a few yards sitting and then switch back .
I havent been able to try a stander yet. However, most of the technology you were referring to that is new on the standers, is also available on the zero turns from the same manufacturer. (Velocity deck, 37 hp Vanguard, oilguard, etc)
As far as comfort goes. YOU NEED TO DEMO A FERRIS 3200 SERIES ZERO TURN. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Especially since you have recently been able to demo the standon equivalent from them.
Maybe this fall! Looks like a great unit!
Sylent Xtinction since this video...I purchased a Bradley stand on mower
@@wayneslawncare9241 how is the bradley working out for you?
Will Krapfl it's doing very well ....no problems
@@wayneslawncare9241 Better question is how are you doing with the standon?
Really great to see everyones preference and awesome information and comparison of the two. Nice video Brian!
Also thought I should add another pro for the zero turn is the motor sits behind you so it keeps the exhaust more out of the way than a stand on.
I've never used a stand on but your reviews are really convincing me of the pros.
What is the starting price point for a stand up vs a zero turn?
They’re convincing me too! All depends. There honestly a budget for all of them. Everything available today is between 7.5-14 for both ztr or stand on.
I love the pro stance from gravely... Love the speed of sit down zero turn, but I feel the stand on can get closer to objects and handles the hill and slopes without the sliding. Plus I feel like you look cooler on a stand on.
Chris Fisher Lol love it
I had a sit down exmark for a couple years.... now have a Ferris Z2 and I will NEVER go back to sit down! Sit down all the way
You see what you are mowing a lot better, I don’t have any more back pain since switching to stand on
Getting up and picking up twigs and trash is so much easier on a stand on then sitting down
Less weight on your trailer with stand on
Can’t recommend a stander enough Brian!
Stand on all day. For the simple reason it does not beat my body up. I feel good afterwards.
David Elder how does a sit down zero turn wear you out?
All the bouncing around. I also have lower back problems. Standing up for last two years has done wonders for my lower back.
I too have lower back problems. Used stand on since 2005. I have to see a chiropractor after a jarring day on a sit-down. My son stated out with stand up. He wanted to demo sit down. After one lawn, he hated the sit down
Also sitting down just makes you feel tired and lazy. Not ideal when u finish mowing and have to trim. Just got a Wright and we are enjoying it so far
Stand on for normal every day lawns
Sit on for very hilly and crazy big bumpy lawn field kinda stuff
Stand is my go to
I love The Gravely ProStance because I feeling like you can get under things without sitting down plus I feel like the Pro Stance would better your body pain after a long period of time compared to a zero turn.
2 herniated discs in my back id rather stand than sit. My first ztr killed my back from the bumps. The vantage i got now keeps my back in line and is fun to drive
I hear ya.
The LAWNdromat Awesome pal
Cut on a zero turn for 5 years tried the stand on and love it
Stand on has proven to be a lot less stressful on my back....
yep, sitters are heavier, but they're more comfortable for a long day. and i'm pretty good at avoiding turf damage ( aside from weeds ).
again, loving that trailer ( the truck too ).
Thx bud
Great video Brian you hit about every pro and con spot on. I’m a home owner with a large property to cut is why I use a exmark zero turn. But if I was a lawn business owner I would have stand in units for sure. The top 3 advantages I see from all stand on owners is productivity ( easy to get in and off for trash or limb pickup) stability (after to lean your weight on steep inclines) and size (able to fit more equipment on the trailer). I wander if any company’s would let you demo a stander with a dedicated mulch kit this fall and see how it does with leaf cleanup
Thanks pal
I have always used sit on... and want to try stand on but don’t want to because my buddy almost lost his finger on a stand on when stuck under a tree
But stand ons are more compact and more visible
Wright sport x.. the best of both worlds. They need to start making more standers with seats!
I just ordered a Wright Sport I for the same reason. I have both back and knee issues. Looking forward to Spring of 2019!
HI Brian, zero turn for me . Why, I'm an older guy and need to sit because my knees couldn't stand standing all day. Thank you for doing these video's and yes being in a back lot looks better than in a place where you are working sometimes. :)
W Lewis Ha true! There’s just too much wind at my commercial site over there
But keep up the great work brother, God bless ya!!
purchased my Bobcat Quickcat 48 for 7k out the door in Monroe, MI. The 52 was a few hundred more. I got the 48 for access to backyards on my route
When we do clean ups we grind and leave the ground up leaves in the grass. Makes great fertilizer.
stand on mower i feel is the best of both worlds.
Totally. But that’s just not what our industry calls them. But I agree 100%
It depends, if you are mowing a lot of commercial property where there would be trash and/or it’s a small quick yard I would go with a stand on mower. If you mow a lot of lots and large yards go with sit down mowers. Me personally I use a sit down, because I mow a lot of lots and large yards.
I’ll take an eXmark turf tracer with the pro slide xt. Can out mow, maneuver faster, lighter, and way less to work on.
And AWESOME striping!!
I'm with you
I use a Scag Pro V with the velki.
Sit down because less fatigue which means more lawns per day and more profit, I do see the advantage of visibility from a stand on
dude i totally agree!
I was typing my reasons while listening to the video and you touched on everything I wrote Dang. The Commercial electric ZTR's get up to $25,000
Lol I tried to be comprehensive!
You can also tow with the zero turn. Feathering is by far the biggest pro for the ztr imo. It’s a huge must where I live.
Why do I have to pick just back pain or knee pain Brian?!?!
:-)
I have been in business for quite some time now I have learned that Zero Turns are much better for rough hilly and big acreage properties but you got to go where the money's at smaller properties with sod and irrigation you leave less of a footprint with a lighter weight machine they both have their advantages
I prefer stand on due to the fact you can use your body geometry to transfer your weight, and with that it inspires more confidence.
Looking at demoing a stand on this spring. I think the head clearance around trees will be a huge difference from our sit down zero turns. We’ve run John Deere Z-Tracs for years but we’re going to demo the scag this spring.
ive never been on stand on, but feel it would hold a hill better. shorts are hard for me to wear too because i help weed whack.
Stand on ALL THE WAY!!!!!!
I have a gravely stand on and a gravely zero turn. Both are commercial and when I want something stripped I use my stand on. I love the Gravley stand on!!!! Especially when I’m constantly mowing my costumers yards.
I fractured my hip in 2 places in a motorcycle accident in 2011
Bouncing around on a zero turn isn't an option. Looked at the stand up models but went with a pull type behind my atv.
About 1/3 of the cost and does a great job.
Try ferris, I have the isx800 with air ride seat and it's smooth as silk, I have 2 acres, the first half acre was sodded and is fairly smooth, the rest was just what ever grew in and its bumpy, I have bad back and neck, with zero probs go check one out
I own a gravelly zero, it’s been great ( 5 years) I’m thinking a stand on would suit me better, as far as getting on & off, thanks Brian👍👍🙏🥰
I feel sit down for bigger commercial property's, and stand on for smaller residential.
How can you prefer a stand on if you never ran a Zero Turn ?? LOL
kevinboo2000 I honestly can’t answer that one lol. I guess it’s not so much a preference anymore, but now I’m set in my “Stand on” ways lol. I have sat on one if that counts.
I like on of both. If mowing for long periods of time I will use the sit but just for little jobs I will just use a stand on
Zero turn all day long for me.
If you can only afford one, go with the rider and bagger in Michigan.
Stand on. I like that you can run a backpack blower while riding vs have to walk it back.
I'm just starting out and I got a stand on I like it because it gets into tight spaces and have great view around flowerbeds hustler super S 36 inch:)
Never tired either.. only toro proline walk behind. I love it
standers are awesome but test a wright stander/ john deere ( wright builds standers for JD ). standers have a lot more versatile in my opinion since its better on your body and yard, are more compact so you can have more on a trailer and lighter.
Excellent presentation of the pros and cons. Wow what a beautiful trailer/tow rig!!
Thank you!
Tracy & Son's Lawn Care we just pick up Ferris Z2 52'' on 10/13/2018 thank to you doing a review.
Thanks Brian I appreciate what you do with this RUclips channel.
You bet Ron
I personally enjoy that zero turns usually have bigger gas tanks. One thing I hate is having to fill up my equipment multiple times a days with fuel
Our standers can gets on slopes that sit on cant touch
