Rip Jaya... favorite walker. By the way was her story in time spiral retconned? During the events of time spiral while Jaya slept she would have dreams of Chandra from the future coming to her aid and training her, then Chandra would eventually bestow Jaya with her goggles while claiming that her master had passed them on to her. The story would then continue as normal and Jaya would go on to train a young Chandra and then pass on said goggles.

I loved her by her flavor texts.

Great story and mostly how I remembered it. I don't like the ending though. With the possible exception of Freyalise before her lost eye or a few other real old entities, Jaya Ballard was one of the most powerful characters in the story and an old planewalker before planeswalkers were extremely nerfed. How Ajani would have even half a chance against her makes no sense. Even if he somehow caught her off guard and used superior physical strength to push her off, she couldn't just walked away and walked back, heck she might have had ways to teleport or fly using fire like rockets. She could do almost anything with light/fire spells. To me it was just plot death, like the opposite of plot armor, that killed her so that they could promote Chandra as like a new Jaya. I guess Jaya was getting old and this was destined to happen anyway but they killed Jaya off to make it more dramatic storywise. I don't know if this was a good story decision but it was a horrible disrespect to Jaya Ballard's character. It is like when Obi Wan lets Darth Vader kill him and turns into a space ghost jedi.. well except, I don't think Jaya's ever come back as a ghost or spirit so it is worse for Jaya.
Side note: Early on I was of the impression that Jaya Ballard was a man, not a woman. I don't know if they retconned her sex or if I were just mistaken. I don't remember if the card text said one way or the other but I could have sworn some of the art did make her look like a grey-long-haired old man.. but then other cards do show a younger woman, so it was confusing. I don't remember any of the old cards showing her as a thief though, maybe that comes after Ice Age? But, then, the Ice Age and sets around then had several big thief characters, so maybe Jaya came from their group?

Ballard is a neighborhood in Seattle, the area Wizards originated from and where I've lived my whole life, playing Magic for 25 years, how am I JUST noticing this?

Just finished Shattered Alliance today. The way Jodah used the mirror to defeat/save/ascend Jaya was pure beauty. He was immortal and beyond our ways, but he loved her as much as or more than Sima. Broke my heart

It's a solid reminder of what kind of stories and characters WotC can create when they put their minds to it - I'm glad you liked it.

Great video. Also rest in peace Jaya.
So just thinking on it, that latest chapter is totally just build-up for Chandra isn't it? Master dies, close friend joins the bad guys. Somehow the student, either through just emotions, a secret scroll, or in mtg's case of timetravel shenanigans in becoming an old walker, becomes more powerful. Student is driven by revenge on their quest.

6 months late into commenting this but I think what it meant was the artifact itself being a magical entity of its own requires a lot more mana for planesalkers to carry or bring with them. So in turn, I think it would drain a lot of energy from the planeswalker and considering the situation they are in, they don't have the luxury to stop over and rest.

I would just like to say I called Ajani would be compleated when Tamiyo was revealed to be compleated. I believe he was compleated after running into Elspeth at the conclusion of Streets of New Capenna. At the time no one was aware Planeswalkers could be compleated. There was actually evidence a spark would prevent compleation. I believe Ajani wanted to attempt to save his old friend or bring her corpse back to her family and was captured in his pursuit unaware of her compleation. I expect many more fan favorites to be compleated or killed off soon. Vraska, Will Kenrith, Garruk, Koth, I expect all of these characters to be casualties in the coming story.

@@CosmicErrata Vraska was set up to fall in almost a cautionary tale way. She’s indebted to the Dimir who are working with Tezzeret. She’s lying to Jace creating a divide in their relationship. I think Vraska will be compleated and then Jace will break fighting against her. At the last moment, Lili is going to save him by killing Vraska and that’s how Jace will discover she’s still alive.

I have this sinking feeling Wizards (or, more likely, Hasbro) is taking steps to cut ties with "old Magic", clearing out classic characters, in order to slowly morph into a total Universes Beyond format. Nothing says good old classic Magic to me more than random Jaya quotes in flavor text. RIP.

Yeah : / the new stories just seem rushed and limited, monster of the week affairs. The new plainswalkers seem like Mary Sue's and there's not really much to make us care about what's happening.

I love the content. Clearly it's becoming popular to talk about the MTG lore because we are returning to it's core story. But the rhythm and tone you use is very forced. I don't think I'm on a unique position to suggest anything. Though, if I were you, I would relax a bit and mix up your cadence. Simply a nudge, not a true criticism. Have a good one.
