Yamaha YXZ 1000R shift actuator inspection and service

- I'm at 4K miles and have heard horror stories of the shift actuator brushes wearing out prematurely due to grease migrating from the gear housing to the motor so I had to inspect mine. Yamaha does not consider this a serviceable part so don't go looking for instructions on doing this in the YXZ Service Manual.
I don't think this is an issue with 2024 models as the assemblers don't pack them like jelly donuts anymore. Eventually the brushess will wear out and replacing the brushes costs $10 vs $650 for a new shift actuator. This is if the commutator is still in good condition.

The quality of your videos is unmatched. I think i speak for everyone when i say, thank you!
Awesome job Massive so cool to see the breakdown you do and how these things work. Its cool to see how that actuator works that is a well known sound to us yxz owners when we get in start our vehicles and put them in gear its neat to actually see that part in action and how it works. Love watching these how to vids just for future reference every one of us yxz owners might need to do this miles down the road. Thanks for doing these
Thank you for the kind words and comments like yours is what keeps me going!
Ive been hoping someone would make this video for years. Followed your video on mine that was starting to throw sh_37 code with 2500 miles and it was completely black and caked in grease inside the electrical part and the brushes are looking rough, hopefully will get a few thousand more miles now that its clean again though. Last yxz i had the actuator went out around 1700 miles.
Man always a great tech video I really appreciate these what offset did you go with for square set up 5/2 or 6/1 ? My dad has around 300 mi on his lol I did do the first service on it it was a breeze after I watched you video on it thanks again for your time most of all.
Thanks! I went with stock 5+2, replacing the rear rims with a set of front OEM beadlocks. Glad the vids helped and your transmission filter wasn't too hard to remove.
@@MassiveOverkill No not bad I went ahead and removed there temp sensor wire and a extension and ratchet it was tight tho to tight for me did use amsoil and it did quite up some shifting noise
@@MassiveOverkill I can’t believe how small the fill hole is on the rear differential
Yeah, I use a diff fill pump that comes with an adapter that fits perfectly in that hole. Otherwise it's nearly impossible to fill it otherwise.
@@MassiveOverkill Lol yes it is
Might be a dumb question but Where would you grease it when assembling? Just the gears themselves? Also any special grease to use?
The gears and all the bearings except the one going to the motor. I used Tinkseal to lube mine.
