    The nuts are not always as flat and even as they should be, so I started to put a second seal and washer (I had to order those as custom-made parts) on the nut side. This reduces the likelihood of a tight nut cracking the glass. I also put some food-grade silicone grease on the seal(s) to ensure they don't easily leak.
    As for installing bulkheads backward - most of my bulkheads have to be backward as there is not really another way to install them. So far I haven't really seen a difference. I would only expect to see a difference at substantial pressures.

    When installing bulkheads in reservoir trash receptacles, it is essential to remove the burrs that result from using a hole saw. Failure to do so will likely result in leaks, no matter how tightly the bulkhead retaining nut is screwed down.

    Good and instructional video. I have installed a few bulkheads backwards on my install and never had any leaking issues as long as the rubber seal is always on the flange (wet side) it shouldn't leak. I've had some leaks with bulkheads placed correctly but not enough tightened. I think that's the tricky part when you install them. I hand tight them and afterwards, I take a rubber elastic and tighten them even further. It usually does the trick. Im too scared of using plyers and crack the tread of the bulkhead. Anyways, thanks for the video, continue the great work team!

    I just bought a 220 with four holes with bulkheads with silicone all over the bottom. I think my only option is to add a generous amount of silicone on the bottom and the top to create a tight seal.

    Ok, so if you cannot fit a union valve or union ball valve or any screw on plumbing to the threads of the bulkhead because it’s only designed for the nut, if you glue PVC under it how would you take it out to maintenance it without cutting it completely out? So basically when you grew pipe inside the threads it’s on serviceable.

    I know this post is older, but I'd love to see some tips/tricks for putting bulkheads in where you can't reach both sides (like the bottom of deeper overflows), especially where you are threading pipe fittings into the bottom of the bulkhead. I have always had trouble keeping the drain/return bulkheads in the bottom of my 240 from seeping.

    • @billlee2726
      @billlee2726 6 лет назад

      thanks! I think what I was more getting at are things like: How do you hold onto the threaded part of the bulkhead while trying to tighten the nut, and then how to keep the bulkhead from loosening while trying to tighten a threaded fitting into the internal threads of the bulkhead. The Sch80 bulkheads have that handy hex end after the threads, but not the ABS ones. Personally, I had to resort to using 2 of those rubber strap adjustable 'wrenches' to hold the threaded end of the bulkhead still while tightening around it, but even they slip.

    well if you put in a two inch dia bulkhead instead of a overflow box to the sump, ,i would assume that you would not put it right at the edge of the glass ,so if you put it about two inches down underneath the strapping and the bulkhead was 2 inch dia that means your water level would be 4 inches down

  • @equidreams
    @equidreams 7 лет назад +2

    So, um, this is probably a dumb question, but if the threads of the bulkhead that stick out on the dry side aren't compatible with most other threaded fittings, how do you attach any PVC to it? I feel like the answer is really obvious, but my mind is blanking right now!

    My problem is obtaining the proper size bulkhead. The hole is 1-1/2" in diameter, but the shank of the bulkhead must be at least 2", and preferably 2-1/2" or 3". I've been to many Internet stores, but I've found it impossible to find what I want. Can you help? Oh, just to be sure, I will be screwing a 3'4" faucet into the outside end of the bulkhead.

    I have 1-1/2” sched. 80 bulkheads threaded for the connected plumbing. Is it proper procedure to use PTFE tape on the threaded joints? Two of my bulkheads have tiny drips, I believe from the threaded connection. I did not use tape and wondering about re-plumbing the whole system.

    My bulkhead has a white hard and softer black seal which of these two should contact the inside (wet) side of the tank am I correct in assuming the softer white seal should touch the glass not the harder black seal?

    • @BRStv

      Hmmm, usually bulkheads will only have one gasket. That gasket is normally installed on the "flange" side of the bulkhead. If you email our customer service team a photo of what you're working with, we might be better able to help you.

    I have plumbed the pipework that snapped off the tank when installing however the bulkhead is leaking. I have the flange on the outside/dry side with the one gasket on the inside/Wet with the nut. Glass in between is 1cm thick Tightened this hand tight but no more, its leaking! I've not attempted to silicone the seal externally yet as I believe its not needed. Really would appreciate any advise as I'm looking to get this tank going asap its a 300L sumped tank thanks again

    Why don't many factors just give you two gaskets one for inside and out plus I I really think since they can make artificial live rock they should really consider starting to make custom overflow covers cuz that's just a big tower of empty space where corals could be pretty sure a lot of people will agree🖒

    Shouldn't there be a gasket on each side?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 года назад

      The gasket is only required on the flange side if you're installing a single bulkhead like Randy is in this video :)
      There are a few exceptions to this rule like if you're using an overflow box kit. Sometimes, depending on the kit/brand, they will include more than one gasket to create a seal between the bulkhead and the tank and also between the tank glass and external overflow box.

    We're prepping our new tank for the 1st leak test but wanted to ask if purchasing an extra gasket for the' "dry side" would be prudent or would it cause trouble (more possibility of a leak) with the ABS bulkheads?
    Equipment: 90 gal Marineland tank with 1 pre-cut corner overflow. Planning on using the Herbie Method with the existing two holes that were made for 1" tubing.

    Hi Guys! So I bought a fiji cube overflow 600gph version and the water is leaking from the bulkhead on the two bottom outlets. Leaking from the gasket. Should I try to tighten it even more? I hand tightened it and tighten a little more with a wrench. The precut hole is a little bigger than the size of the bulkhead. Is that a factor?

    • @BRStv

      Sounds like you may have cross threaded them. If so, check for damage on the threads. If damaged, you may have to replace the bulkheads.

  • @urodriguez3444

    So how do you connect anything with the outside thread?????

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 года назад +1

      The outside threads are for the installation nut only and not for attaching anything to. You'll want to glue PVC into the inside of the bulkhead if it's a slip connection, or thread a fitting into it if it's a threaded connection.
